Farnsworth, 64, a college dropout who invented the cathode tube and transmitted the world's first television picture at the age 20, is dead of a heart attack. Farnsworth, who held more than 300 electronics patents, died at Latter Day Saints Hospital late thursday. His first television transmissions, in 1927 and 1929 came from a laboratory in San Francisco. At the age of 15, Farnsworth had developed a 1 theory of electronic television and applied for a patent on a teleivision system when he was 18. The 1 1 i year, the death of his father forced him to drop out of Brigham Young University because of financial difficulties.

A native of Indain Creek, Utah, he was granted the world first television broadcasting license in 1934. He had been president and director of the Farnsworth Research Division of International Telphone and Telegraph Co. He is survived by his wife Elma, three sons, Philo, Russell and Kent, two sisters, a brother and a half-sister.
