"It's just one of those things. It's part of baseball," Wilson said. Wilson threw one pitch, a ball, to the next batter, Guerrero, before Brantley relieved him. Giants' Manager Roger Craig said he didn't want Guerrero to beat Wilson.

Wilson, who threw 117 pitches, said after the game he had no complaint with Craig's decision. "Mv ball had been getting up," Wilson said. "JB (Brantley) has been doing a good job. Nobody is perfect all the time. He'll get the next one." The Cardinals' Lee Smith, 3-2, who struck out five batters in two innings alter relieving starter Joe Ma-grane, took the victory.

Smith gave up a walk to Will Clark and a single to Kevin Mitchell in the ninth before striking out Williams, Terry Kennedy and pinch-hitter Ernest Riles to end the game. "We had out chances," Kennedy said. "We had three pretty fair hitters up there, but the other guy (Smith) isn't a chump. I've known that for a couple of years." "The biggest thing is we won the game," Pagnozzi said. "You feel sorry for the guy.

He pitched his butt off. That's the game." Wilson had few hit scares before Pagnozzi's hit, but the catcher said the pitcher wasn't overpowering. "It's funny. He gets you out, but every time you're up there you get a good pitch to hit," Pagnozzi said. "He's 6-1, his ERA is 2.

He looks hittable. He's around the place. But he threw a heck of a game." The Giants stayed Vh games behind National League West-leading Cincinnati. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak. "It was a tough loss, but the best thing is they (the Reds) lost, too.

We didn't lose anything. We're still within striking distance," Craig said. By Steve SneddonGazette-Joumai ST. LOUIS First, Trevor Wilson's no-hitter vanished and soon after the game got away from the San Francisco Giants. Terry Pendleton gave the St.

Louis Cardinals a 2-1 victory with a two-out eighth-inning single through the left side that scored Willie McGee from third before 43,690 at Busch Stadium Saturday night. Pendleton's hit and a single by Pedro Guerrero, which moved McGee to third, came off Jeff Brantley, who relieved Wilson. St. Louis scored both runs in the eighth after Wilson, who suffered his first loss in seven decisions, held the Cardinals hitless for 6V3 innings. Catcher Tom Pag-nozzi broke up the no-hitter with a single to left in the seventh, only his 13th hit of the year.

Wilson, who lost a no-hit bid against San Diego in the ninth inning a month ago, was philosophical about his first defeat of the year. "You've got to take it like it's one of those games," Wilson said. "I'd rather be lucky than good. I was lucky in my last outing in San Fran." Wilson pitched 5 innings against Chicago in his last start a week ago and got the victory. His second brush with a no-hitter left Wilson optimistic.

"Maybe not this year, but down the the road, I might come up with one," Wilson said. "Flirting around with it will help me when it comes time to finally pin it down. I'll be more experienced." In the eighth inning, Wilson gave up his sixth and final walk of the game to the Cardinals' Craig Wilson with one out. With pinch-runner Rex Hudler on first, Ozzie Smith hit a groundball that skipped off second baseman Robby Thompson's glove for an error. Ryan (9-4), making his first start in Tiger Stadium since 1978, allowed three runs on four hits in 5 innings before his lower back tightened up.

He left the game leading 5-2 after walking the bases full. With a 3-0 count on Mark Salas in the sixth, he signaled for for the Texas trainer. After a brief chat, Ryan walked off the field. Jamie Mover, who pitched V-h innings of no-hit ball, then walked" pinch-hitter Gary Ward to score a run. Detroit loaded the bases in the ninth before Brad Arnsberg got Cecil Fielder to fly out to the fence in left for his first save.

With one out, Moyer walked Mike Heath, one of 10 walks issued by Texas pitchers. Kenny Rogers came on to strike out Whitaker, but walked Tony Phillips. Then Arnsberg relieved Rogers and walked Alan Trammell before getting Fielder. Ryan struck out six and walked seven, his most since Sept. 24, 1987, at Atlanta.

The victory came just one day before the 17th anniversary of one of Ryan's most famous wins his second career no-hitter a 6-0 victory over the Tigers. Ryan has not won at Tiger Stadium since a 4-3 decision over Jim Slaton on July 23, 1978. ANGELS 8, BLUE JAYS 7 at Anaheim Brian Downing hit his second solo homer, California's sixth of the game, in the ninth inning, giving the Angels the victory. Downing's one-out shot was his second off Duane Ward (1-4) and ended a game in which two other Angels, Dave Winfield and Dante Bichette, also homered tice. Mark Eichhorn (1-4) got Kelly Gruber to line out to end a bases-loaded threat in the ninth after the Blue Jays had tied the game on an RBI double by Mookie Wilson.

WHITE SOX 8, YANKEES 7 at New York Ron Karkovice homered with one out in the 1 0th inning after Chicago blew a 7-0 lead. It was the Yankees' fourth straight defeat and ninth in 11 games against Chicago this season. The White Sox have won 10 consecutive road games. Karkovice, who was 4-for-5, hit his fourth homer off reliever Lee Guetterman (6-4). Ivan Calderon also had four hits for Chicago, which had 17 hits.

Don Pall (1-3) pitched two innings and Bobby Thigpen got the final out for his major league-leading 29th save, striking out Bob Geren with the bases loaded. ROYALS 2-7, RED SOX 1-8 at Boston Ellis Burks three-run pinch-hit homer ended a six-game losing streak and gave Boston a split of a day-night doubleheader with Kansas City. The Royals won the first game on RBI singles by Willie Wilson and Bill Pecota off reliever Jeff Reardon in the eighth inning. Roger Clemens pitched seven shutout innings and Kevin Associated Press UNDER AND IN TIME: Jody Reed slides beneath the feet of Royals' catcher Mike MacFarlane Saturday. Sox split with Ports By Martin RosalesGazette-Journal First the Reno Silver Sox had to win the mind games before they could defeat the Stockton Ports.

Starting pitcher Cecil Pettiford overcame his Moana jinx and the Silver Sox overcame the Ports jinx by beating Stockton, 9-5, in the second game of a California League double-header Saturday at Moana Municipal Stadium. Stockton won the first game, 4-2. Going into the second game, Pettiford had a 1-4 record on his home field and the Silver Sox had dropped 1 1 of 14 games against Stockton this season. Both marks were improved upon, albeit slightly, with the victory. Pettiford was like an overwound toy before his start but turned in a workman-like performance.

"Hopefully, this is the new me at this park," said Pettiford, who yielded four runs on six hits in five innings. "I was thinking about this field for a whole week and I finally decided that maybe it was me and not the field that was the problem. I went out there with the same attitude that I have on the road (where he is 6-2). I wasn't going to let anything the field, the wind, the bloop hits get to me." The Silver Sox broke a 2-2 tie and took the lead for good in the second game with a four-run rally in the fourth inning. Milt Harper, who homered in Game One, led off with a walk and moved to third on a one-out double by Brad DeJardin.

Stockton starter Guillermo Sandoval then walked Dan Firova to load the bases. Gary Nails sent Harper home with a sacrifice fly to center and Santiago Garcia's single to left scored DeJardin. On the play, Firova went to third and Garcia to second. Stockton reliever Dave Fitzgerald was brought in to stop the rally, but was ineffective. His first pitch to Reno's Mike Easley was wild, allowing Firova to score, and Easley doubled down the right-field line, scoring Garcia to make it 6-2.

Game One was dominated by Stockton pitchers, who struckout 12 Silver Sox in the seven-inning contest. Ports reliever Angel Miranda, who earned his 12th save, whiffed the last five Silver Sox to end the game. Starter Mark Keifer (1-0), who was recently called up from the Arizona rookie league, won his first decision in two tries. The Orioles got solo homers from Sam Horn, his fifth, and Randy Milligan, his fourth in the last five games and 18th for the season. INDIANS 3, MARINERS 0 at Seattle Bud Black and Doug Jones combined on a five-hit shutout, Cleveland's second this year against Seattle, as the Indians won their third straight 3-0 Saturday night over the Mariners.

Black (8-4), who extended his scoreless streak to 23 innings, gave up four hits over 7 innings before Jones came in for his 25th save. It was the Indians' ninth shutout of the year, tying them with Oakland for the AL lead, one behind the New York Mets. The Indians broke a six-game winning streak by All-Star lefthander Randy Johnson (9-4), who pitched for the first time in 1 0 days. Johnson allowed six hits and walked seven over eight plus innings in losing for the first time since May 27. Romine homered for Boston, which lost its sixth straight.

Luis Aquino (4-0) allowed eight hits in seven innings and Jeff Montgomery pitched two innings tor his 10th save. Rob Murphy (0-6) started the eighth and was the loser. Tom Bolton (2-0) pitched three innings to win the late game, while Jay Bailer (0-1) got the loss. ORIOLES 3, TWINS 2 at Baltimore Phil Bradley's RBI single in the 11th inning scored Mike Devereaux and gave Baltimore its fifth victory in six games.

Devereaux led off with an infield hit off loser Terry Leach (2-3), moved to second on Billy Ripken's single and to third on Steve Finley's bunt. Mark Williamson (7-1) retired 11 straight Twins for the victory. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 10 appearances. PHILLIES 12, ASTROS 8 at Houston Dickie Thon had a homer among three hits, again tormenting his former teammates, and Philadelphia set a club record with nine runs in the fourth inning while beating Houston. From wire service reports Two three-run homers didn't convince Kal Daniels that Wrigley Field is a good place to hit. "I really don't like to hit in this park because the grass is too high." Daniels said Saturday after he led the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

"I'm a line-drive hitter. I had never homered here until this year and now I have three." Daniels hit a three-run homer in the first and another in the eighth, both off Greg Maddux (4-9), who hasn't won in 13 starts since May 5. "I haven't been swinging well because of an injured back," Daniels said. "I couldn't cut loose. Now it has loosened up." Mike Morgan (8-7) pitched a three-hitter for his fourth shutout and fifth complete game this season.

It was his third career three-hitter. "I had good down action on the ball," said Morgan, who had 18 groundouts. "The wind was blowing in and the grass is thick. They gave me seven runs and you'd better win with seven runs." PIRATES 8, PADRES 4 at Pittsburgh R.J. Reynolds and Sid Bream hit two-run singles as Pittsburgh broke an eighth-inning tie.

Pittsburgh has won 10 of 11 against the Padres after losing nine of 12 to them last season. The Pirates have won 10 of 12 overall while the Padres have lost 13 of 15. Welch did have a few problems Saturday, despite not allowing an earned run in 7 'a innings. In the first four innings, the A's right-hander threw 90 of his 128 pitches and was constantly working out of danger. The fourth inning was the biggest obstacle as Welch walked Milwaukee's Dave Parker and gave up a single to Greg Brock to lead off the inning. Welch, however, sandwiched a walk to Darryl Hamilton between two strikeouts and a Bill Spiers fly ball to left to end the inning. For some reason, Welch appeared to be more comfortable pitching out of the stretch than the windup.

"I was having a difficult time, I was just rushing a little bit early in the ballgame," Welch said. Jose Canseco tagged a Bill Krueger fastball into the left field seats to give Oakland a 1-0 lead. But in the second inning, Brock blooped arfly ball into right field. Randolph, Canseco and first baseman Mark McGwire all ran after it, and as the ball fell in, Randolph slowed down and tried to avoid hitting McGwire.
