Reno Gazette-Journal Monday, July 7, 1986 3B Reno comes up short in second game, loses pair to Visalia grounder to third baseman Cortez, who has seen little action there. Cortez bobbled the ball, dived after it and tried to roll it to second baseman Wasem. The ball rolled into center field and the tying runs scored. Tom Schwarz hit an RBI single and Eddie Yanes forced in a run when Stewart hit him. Senne's three-run double made it 11-4.

In the nightcap, Reno took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Brad Pounders singled and Howard walked. Pounders scored on shortstop Reboulet's error. Cortez hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly and Jeff Gray hit an RBI single. With any luck at all, Scott Marsh might have pitched a shut out.

He allowed four hits a two earned runs in a complete game effort. Instead, he was on the losing end. Visalia made it 3-2 on Henry Gatewood's questionable two-run home run. From the press box, it looked two Gossage turns down heat, burns Chicago with slider California League want him going in that situation," Skaalen said. "We tried to force it." "A young ballclub will make mistakes, but it's too late in the season to be making them.

Alls we can do is keep telling them to work as hard as they can. I'm on the verge of letting them know how fed up I am." The Padres, 7-7 in the season's second half, lost five of eight games in this homestand. Errors and walks continued to plague Reno in its 13-7 loss to Visalia in the first game. Reno starter Ken Clawson, who walked 45 in 90 innings before Sunday's game, walked three of the first four Oaks he faced. Two of them scored.

Clawson kept Visalia from breaking open the game when he induced Jeff BlfoMjiWll i AIR BALL: Milwaukee's Ernest Riles finds Oakland's Alfredo Griffin a bit too low to tag at second. Griffin stole the base, and the A's won the game, 6-3 feet to the left of the left field foul pole. The Oaks then took a 4-3 lead on two unearned runs in the fifth. Sal Nicolosi led off with a walk, advanced on a wild pitch and a Senne sacrifice bunt. Then with two outs, shortstop Ging made an error on Joey Aragon's grounder that scored Nicolosi.

Reboulet singled home Aragon to give Visalia the lead. Jeff Perry, in his first professional start, went the distance for the victory. RENO NOTES Reno Padres All-Star second baseman Roberto Alomar was taken to the hospital with stomach pains before Sunday night's double-header against the Visalia Oaks Alomar, Reno's leadoff hitter, is second in the California League with a .349 batting average. Padres trainer Gene Confreda said tests proved negative, but said the club will watch him closely during the next day because of possible appendicitis. Giants, fans hail McCovey SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Willie McCovey, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame next month, was honored by the San Francisco Giants before Sunday's game and thanked fans who "adopted me as one of your favorite sons." Fellow Hall of Famers Willie Mays, Monte Irvin and Johnny Mize joined in the half-hour ceremony in front of the pitcher's mound at Candlestick Park.

McCovey, who received a two-minute standing ovation when he was driven onto the field, sparked another ovation when he welcomed to pitcher Steve Carlton, the newest Giant and a future Hall of Famer. McCovey, who wll be inducted into the Hall in Cooperstown, N.Y., on Aug. 3, said he was "standing here on top of the world" as he drew praise from Mize, Irvin, Mays, former manager Bill Rig-ney, National League President Chub Feeney, Giants owner Bob Lurie and California Assembly Speaker Willie Brown. PHILLIES 12, REDS 5 at Philadelphia Pinch-hitter Jeff Stone doubled and homered in the third inning Sunday as the Philadelphia Phillies tied a major-league record with seven extra-base hits in an eight-run rally. The mark for extra-base hits in an inning has been reached five times previously. The Phillies had 10 hits in the game, but eight were for extra bases. Philadelphia had four doubles, a triple and two homers in the inning as they matched a record last tied in 1949, also by the Phillies against the Reds. Tim Senne scored to give Visalia a 3-0 lead, but the double play kept the game within reach. Trailing by three going to the second inning, Reno erupted for five runs which knocked Oaks starter DeWayne Coleman out of the game. After Thomas Howard singled and Dave Cortez walked, Greg Hall hit an RBI single. Pablo Rivera then hit his first home run of the season to right. Rivera's three-run blast gave Reno a 4-3 lead.

The Padres got another run after Jim Wasem and Adam Ging each singled. Wasem scored to make it 5-3 on Jerald Clark's fielder's choice. Reno, though, couldn't hold the lead. Visalia scored eight runs on just three hits off three Padres pitchers in the fourth inning. Skaalen pulled Clawson after he gave up a single to John Eccles and hit Senne.

McCaskill, 9-5, retired the first 12 batters and finished with nine strikeouts in notching his sixth complete game and seventh victory in his last eight decisions. Hernandez retired the last four batters for his 17th save. As a result, the Visalia Oaks took a double-header from the Reno Padres Sunday at Moana Municipal Stadium. Down by one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Dave Cortez led off with a grounder to third baseman Jeff Hubbard, who threw the ball down the right-field line. Cortez stopped at third.

However, he was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Jeff Gray's grounder to shortstop Jeff Roubelet, whose throw was perfect. "He wasn't supposed to go on that ball," Reno manager Jim Skaalen said of Cortez. "That ball was medium speed. I told him to go on a high hopper up the middle." Gray was then thrown out trying to steal second base, which ended the game. The slumping A's, who have lost 25 of their last 31 games, defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-3, Sunday behind the pitching of Jose Rijo, who broke a five-game personal losing streak. Jeff Newman, interim manager while waiting for LaRussa to take over, said he felt good about the victory except for one thing. "I wish I could have given him eight in a row instead of just one," Newman said. LaRussa, hired last week to succeed the fired Jackie Moore, missed the three-game series against the Brewers, intending to join the A's today in Boston. Sunday's victory broke a seven-game Oakland losing streak.

"I'll be glad when it's over, for the team's sake," said Newman, who had a 2-8 record as interim manager. "Now we'll start a new era under Tony. I'll do everything I can to help him win." Oakland's Tony Phillips tied the major-league record for assists in a game by a second baseman with 12. Six other second basemen have had a dozen assists in a game. INDIANS 5, ROYALS 0 at Cleveland Tom Candiotti pitched a four-hitter as Cleveland won its seventh consecutive game and handed Kansas City a club-record ninth consecutive defeat.

The Royals suffered eight-game losing streaks in 1971, 1974 and 1980. Their current 10-game losing streak on the road also is the longest in club history. The Royals ended the road trip 0-9. RED SOX 7, MARINERS 3 at Boston Tom Seaver, making his second appearance for Boston, pitched seven solid innings and won the 308th game of his career, allowing four hits and an unearned run. The 41-year-old Seaver, acquired from the Chicago White Sox on June 29, allowed four hits and one unearned run in seven innings.

Seaver, 2-0 with Boston and 4-6 overall, had to sweat out the victory when Seattle's Jim Presley hit a two-run homer, his 18th, off Joe Sambito in the eighth inning to make it 4-3. In earning his 15th save in San Diego's 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs Sunday, the Padres right-hander struck out the side in the ninth inning, relying more on a crafty slider. "I was throwing it in a good location, and it had some good bite on it," said Gossage. "That made for a tough day for the hitters." Gossage, who retired Shawon Dunston on a fly ball for the final out in the eighth in relief of winner Andy Hawkins, 6-5, mowed down the Cubs in the ninth. He and Hawkins, a former Reno Silver Sox player, held Chicago to eight hits.

I threw a fastball to get (Jerry) Mumphrey and sliders to get the other two (Thad Bosley and Gary Matthews)," said Gossage. "I've always used the slider even though all these years the fast ball had been my bread and butter pitch. "I don't care how hard you throw in this league, they're going to catch up with you. You need another pitch." Hawkins, 6-5, threw 7 innings as he lasted past the sixth inning for the first time in his last four starts. He struck out three Cubs and walked three, stranding nine runners through the opening six innings.

DODGERS 4, PIRATES 3 at Los Angeles Rookie Jeff Hamilton snapped a 3-3 tie with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning to lead Los Angeles. Rick Honeycutt, 5-4, allowed seven hits and all three runs in six innings for the victory. Tom Niedenfuer pitched one-hit ball over two innings, then Ken Howell pitched the ninth for his fifth save. Ken Landreaux, who entered the game in the third inning as a pinch-runner for injured Franklin Stubbs, began the winning rally with a leadoff single against reliever Jim Winn, 1-3. He advanced to third on a sacrifice and a two-out wild pitch and scored on Hamilton's first game-winning RBI in the major leagues.

METS 5, ASTROS 3 at New York Sid Fernandez became the National League's first 11-game winner and Howard Johnson and Kevin Mitchell homered to lead New York. WHITE SOX 5, YANKEES 2 at Chicago Julio Cruz and John Cangelosi singled home runs in the second inning and Wayne Tolleson and Steve Lyons drove in insurance runs to lead Floyd Bannister and Chicago.
