More than 3300 women in uniform are now President Truman soon will talk with top Canadian officials on joint preparedness against air attack from the North Pole. He probably will make a trip to Canada for this purpose in June. Like Mexico, it will be announced a a "social" visit.

The coal mining mixup on safety stresses overlapping of Federal agencies. Navy officers run the mines, but the Solid Fuels Administration still represents Government efforts. The Bureau of Mines continues its inspections without authority for enforcement. High income taxes are preventing industry from attracting and keeping men with leadership ability. Thus, one of the top problems of corporations today is to provide executives with incentives to greater efforts and larger responsibilities.

Experiments are being conducted in producing sugar from wood. The tests have proved so encouraging that timber has been sent to the U. S. from Australia to ascertain whether wood wastes from that country can be used. 3fc With strike clouds growing blacker, the workers' dilemma is that they say they need more money to meet the high cost of living.

But the same high cost of living pinches them so tightly many can afford to miss paychecks that strikes entail. This world's highest life conveyor belt, made by Goodyear, would top Pittsburgh's Gulf Bldg. with 140 feet to spare. A rubber conveyor belt capable of raising 600 tons of coal an hour to a height of 715 feet is being made for a U. S.

Steel Corp. mine near Birmingham. Use of steel-cable cords in the carcass of the belt permits operation of such a belt a half mile long. Wash Day Eliminated Less absenteeism is the goal of a large carpet mill in New York. It has started a laundry service for its thousands of women employes.

While they work, their wash is done in automatic machines. It's delivered to them at the end of the shift. Union Pacific picked a box car at random and traced its movements for 4'j years. It rolled over 83 railroads (some as many as 10 times: changed hands from one road to another 221 times (an aver age of every 7'i days), and visited every state in the union and sev eral Canadian provinces. Business Comic Books The American Bankers Assn.

Is turning to the comic book as a method of training the nation's youth in thrift and merits of the banking system. The comic book Is entitled: "Peter Penny and His Magic Dollar." General Electric Co. also is using a comic book to tell its story of jet propulsion. Administration pressure for lower prices is centering on home build- ine. President Truman and his aides believe if housing costs start slidine.

the wind will co out of a lot of high-priced commodities. Inside White House fact on the price situation is that lagging home building, rather than steel, is re garded as the key to the current price dilemma and the greatest threat of a possible nationwide -bust," TV 1 HI VtTIIHlL nun rvsriitME tiimimw TOD a' NATIONAL UNION INDEMNITY COMPANY cutting coal seams with mechanical saws Mr. Russell and loading coal with automatic machines. Dry cutting brings the dust up to around 300 million or 400 million particles per cubic foot of air, which highly dangerous. Dust can be reduced by using a spray of water with the cutting machines, but only a small percentage or mines ao this because water often is scarce nd expensive in the mines.

By utilizing synthetic soaps, the amount of water needed i3 reduced about four-fifths. The use of a water spray alone cuts dust particles to around 50 million to 80 million particles per cubic foot. This, however, is still around the danger point. The Bureau of Mines believes this should be reduced to approximately 20 million. Tests have shown that a synthetic, such as Nacconol made by Allied Chemical Dye used with the spray cuts the dust to 10 million particles por cubic foot.

The cost is less than one-fifth of a cent per ton of roal mined. Besides lessening the danger oi explosions, preventing silicosis and aiding illumination, the new system reduces the frequency need of rock-dusting. Apricots Aid Planes Apricot seeds keep airliner engines running smoothly. TWA uses thousands of them. The pits, reduced to the size of cracked wheat, are used as an abrasive in blasting carbon out of Constellation engine cylinder heads during overhaul.

Mecha'nics settled on the apricot pits after trying sand which took much time, and wheat which became a wartime scarcity. Consumer credit is expanding rapidly, bolstering purchasing power In 1947. But instalment purchases pi it a Urn on family incomes for nfxt year, and that will be the time when the business recession is the deepest.
