9E Entertainment names and faces in the news Sunday, August 24, 1986 Reno Gazette-Journal by Law" as the opening attraction. It will present a total of 24 films from countries that include, in addition to the United States, West Germany, Australia, France, Canada, Brazil, Poland, Britain, Sweden and Japan. There will also be a revival showing of William Wyler's classic "Dodsworth." Wire service reports Vasser has won three Emmys and an Oscar nomination, but his breakthrough could be "Canyon Consort," which many PBS stations will show Sept. 3. It's a lyrical film that follows the Paul Win-ter Consort as it composes music in the heart of the Grand Canyon.

Such films usually have hard times breaking even, but Vasser already has sold 7,000 copies at "you have to remember that a video by Duran Duran or Madonna will only sell "We do sound effects too. You might see a sign saying 'telephone ringing' or 'dog You have to remember a deaf person watching a movie can't hear such sounds, which can be vital information." Home-video companies, which close caption many of their main titles, pay all the expenses for the process. The National Closed Captioning Institute in Falls Church, which originated in 1979, started in home video in the early '80s. The scoop on captions Script makes comeback "The Kiss of the Spider Woman," Armand Assante, whose credits include "Private Benjamin" and the Mickey Spillane potboiler "I the Jury," and Rona Freed, a young Israeli actress now living in New York. What makes it different, according to those filming here, is the setting among the "penitente" sects of Hispanic Roman Catholic communities in northern New Mexico and southwestern Colorado, where each year someone is chosen to be the Christ figure and accept the community's sins.

"Every year someone wouldn't come back," Osmond said, who heard the stories of the often fatal, now said to be outlawed, ritual from his wife, who was raised in New Mexico. 'Peggy Sue' for festival The prestigious New York Film Festival, which opens Sept. 19, has lined up the premiere of Francis Coppola's new movie "Peggy Sue Got Married" for its closing night on Oct. 5, always a big occasion. The movie stars Kathleen Turner and Nicholas Cage.

The festival previously announced Jim Jarmusch's "Down Dreyfuss helps out The reason why Richard Dreyfuss who narrates and appears in the opening and closing sequences of "Stand By Me" isn't mentioned in the movie ads for the Rob Reiner-directed film is one of the nicer Hollywood stories: Reiner originally narrated the $7 million Columbia film but wasn't happy with the results. He showed it to Dreyfuss, who loved the story, was "willing and happy" to lend his talents to the production but felt that if he were listed as star it would distract from the film about four young teen-age boys. Actor wins recognition These are heady days for Lance Henriksen. After appearing in about 20 movies, people are finally recognizing him on the street, and with good reason. Henriksen plays Bishop, the android, in "Aliens," the summer's big hit.

"It's opening lots of doors," the veteran actor says of the movie, which he calls "a hard one to make" because it was very tough and physical. "It involved being on a sound stage for four months," he notes. "But I loved it." Henriksen is also being seen this summer in "Choke Canyon," in which he plays a corporate villain trying to eliminate a scientist who could expose illegal nuclear waste dumping. "I don't think these guys think of themselves as heavies," he Seventeen years ago, character actor Cliff Osmond wrote a script called "The Penitent" and then put it away. That script, a love story set among a ritual sect in northern New Mexico, now is being filmed as a small independent production on the outskirts of colonial San Miguel de Allende, in central Mexico.

The director? Character actor Cliff Osmond, who is adding director for the first time to his previous credits as writer and actor in dozens of film and television productions. Osmond observed that in many ways the film was written by "someone else. When you're 32 and when you're 49, in some ways you're different people." The story is of a love triangle played by Raul Julia, recently in Jane Edmondson, an executive at the National Closed Captioning Institute, said that most people are ignorant about closed captioning. Apparently a common notion is that it consists of someone superimposed on the bottom of a TV screen interpreting the action in sign language for the hearing impaired. Actually, Edmondson said, closed captioning is the special subtitles added to a print.

For videocassettes, to have those titles appear on the screen, a decoder costing $200 has to be hooked up to the VCR. "Basically, it's subtitles, like you'd see in a foreign film, except these are in English," she said. "These are more sophisticated than foreign film subtitles. We place our captions underneath the person speaking. There are white caption letters in a black box.

Also, there's a black background so you don't get that white on white you often get in subtitled movies. Reiner says of the character he portrays in "Choke Canyon." "They think it's more like playing hard ball." Henriksen's credits include parts in "Dog Day Afternoon," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "The Right Stuff," and "Jagged Edge." On Sept. 5 he starts a new movie, "Survival Quest," which he reports is about "taking kids out in the woods and teaching them how to survive there." Home video aids art Home video is doing wonders for the hardy band of Americans who make arty documentaries, according to David Vasser. "There's a whole movement called video publishing," he said. "If you can get an idea for small groups of people, you have a chance." )UR SEASONS MISSED YOUR PAPER? Call Reno Gazette-Journal RESTAURANTt French Cuisine in the Continental Lodge at 1885 S.
