Ninety pairs were entered last year in the world championship Masters pair event, and this year more than 100 pairs are expected to enter this greatest of all pair events, the winners of which are awarded the world championship pair title and custody of the Waldemar von Zedtwitz gold trophy. Defenders this year will be M. A. Lightman of Memphis, and Robert Appleyard of New York. Appleyard, who has won this titie twice, plays a beautiful defensive game.

He held the North cards in today's hand and won the opening lead with the ace of hearts. Declarer without a second's hesitation put on the king. This would indicate a singleton, but Appleyard was not fooled. He returned the queen of hearts and cashed the setting trick. Declarer made a fine play when he put his king of hearts on the first trick.

He knew that the seven of hearts had to be a singleton. And if North made a mistake and did not come back with a heart, East could get rid of all of dummy's hearts on his good clubs and ruff his losing heart.
