WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER U, 1957. THE LOGANSPORT PRESS, LOGANSPORT, INDIANA. PAGE TWENTY-ONE Wider Choice Is Available In Wallpaper Expressing personal taste is the aim in decorating today, and new wallpapers help, the horaemaker fulfill this aim, with a wider-than- ever variety of patterns. Designed to complement the elegant, newly-softened lines of other home furnishings, many of the latest wallpapers could well be the keynote in decorating a room. For instance, a bold pattern such as a graceful adaptation of a damask dramatizes a formal room, while a quaint floral gives a "country" feeling te a more casual setting. Then there are mural-type scenic papers that lend depth and dimension to a room and bring the outdoors indoors. • Displaying formal gardens, country views, Oriental themes or graceful flowers and foliage, the scenic papers offer an economical way to create a focal point in a room. One wall can be papered in a scenic pattern, providing a center of interest, and the remaining walls can be covered with a plain, textured or embossed paper in a correlating color. Trend in wallpaper is toward the use of fewer colors. Tints or shades of the same or closely related colors are used with one or more accent colors. Danish influence is reflected in occasional chairs that fit readily into attractive grouping. Cantilevered arms curve gracefully. . . ' Shapely Fashions Get Aid From Foundations Evening accessory to accent the eyes are glamourous gold and rhinestone glasses. Newly curved and eased, fall fashions seem to take shape only when on the figure—and new foundations are cleverly designed to help every figure achieve the proper proportions for outer fashions. The proportioning garments come in lovely new colors, and in new sheer fabrics with a luxury look. There are delicate laces, patterned elastics, rich satins, even touches of velvet in fall's brassieres, girdles, corselets. There are reds, turquoise, aqua and honey-hued beiges to add more color to the corsetry palette which already includes mauve, mint, tangerine, hyacinth and other flattering shades—plus white, of course, and that perennial fall favorite, black. Design news focuses on necklines, with plunge fronts and low U-cuts and V-cuts in back to coordinate with any and every day or evening decolletage. The new bareness is evident not only in' brassieres but in corselets as well. Brassiere cups, for the most part, are rounded, with" shell-like lining of foam or flannel shaping the undercup sections of many styles, and minutely thin contour linings shaping the entire cup sections of many others. This pre- shaping is intended for uplift without exaggeration. Girdles range from waistline styles to be paired with long line brassieres (or, for the slim figure, a bandeau) to those with high tops rising almost to the bosom. Most girdles ease rather than cinch the waist, and most have some special control feature over the hips. This control usually takes the form of doubled panels'of elastic, or of rigid fabric panels set in at the sides. i Slimming panel controls are also found in corselets keyed to the slender silhouette, even among pull-ons styled for the junior figure. Wall to Wall, Room Size? Is Rug Query Every homemaker buying new carpeting faces the question, "Shall it be wall-to-wall carpet or room-sized rug?" Each type has its advantages and there is a right size as well as the right color and design for a setting. "Wall-to-wall when the room is small" is a good axiom, as an unbroken floor line enlarges .the area visually and also helps to tie several rooms together. Full floor coverage is luxurious and provides the maximum in carpet's warmth and. quieting effects. Sometimes more flexibility -in furnishings is - required. Newlyweds and others with only semi- permanence in an apartment or house want to be able to move easily. What can they buy that will serve immediate needs and continue' to have a future in a new home? A room-sized rug is the answer. It is easily transported and adapted to new locations, and it costs a little less to begin with than the First $& Rugged Bulova ."Diroclor." Smart styling, expansion band. Some of the multi-color tweeds or gentle abstract patterns are a wise choice when new homemakers are still forming decorating plans. These designs seem to go with everything, lend themselves to changes in color schemes and look as right in a new bedroom or guest room as in the original living room. •Rugs can be turned around .to equalize wear. They can be cut and bound to fit new spaces—such as' an upstairs hallway, or the stairs themselves, or a dining alcove. A rug can be of any size that fits the room in best proportions. It is economical to choose standard widths of nine, twelve, fifteen or even eighteen feet, but these dimensions can be trimmed to size, if required, and there are no limits on length. Any broadloom carpet can be bought as a rug. Even in permanent homes, room-size rugs may be preferred. A border of lovely wood.around a rug has traditional charm. Some of the new rugs of distinctive pattern have decorative border 1 of their own, and center motifs. Whether the choice is carpet or rugs, fall collections provide variety in color and design to suit any taste or budget. Shape Tells Shoe Story For Season The shape's the thing in new fall shoes. As fashions are molded to the body so are shoes to the foot. ,As the body seems to float in fall's new soft fabrics, so the foot 'glides along, swan-like and elegant in soft, foot-hugging leathers. Pointed toes are found on prac- ticaly all pumps this fall, and on some causuals. Toes are made to look even longer by higher throat and vamp lines. The spindle-heeled dressy oxford is a prime example of the new silhoutte. Fitted to the arch, long-toed and often tied with grosgrain ribbon, it has an aristocratic air. It may combine matte, p-atent or highly-polished smooth leather 'with suede—one leather in a weskit and the other in the remainder of the shoe. Some long narrow toes are squared off at the end as though snipped off with scissors. Soft-to-the-foot and soft-to^the Smart and colorful, new fall jewelry reflects the glow of autumn. The fashion trend to head-to-toe color coordination has sparked interest in colorful jewelry, says the Jewelry Industry Council, and stylists have used colored stones, colored beads and new texture effects in traditional metals to produce a dazzling galaxy of necklaces, bracelets, pendants, earrings and pins. Chains are creating the biggest fashion excitement in the new fall jewelry, and they have been given every type -of treatment imaginable. Glowing colored stones, set flat and joined with chain links, are brand new. Delicate filigree chains in many -strands .give a covered look to the new open necklines. - ~ Hand-carved rosettes and acanthus leaves decorate the headboard of this Iralian Directoire bedroom group in fru.itwood. Blending beautifully as a French provinicial bench. Costume Jewelry Is Aglow With All Shades of Autumn Long chains, worn loose and swinging or casually roped, use beadi or stones for their colorful look. New pendants use colorful stones or pearls, in"graceful designs hung from delicate chains. Color interest is found in pearls, too, with shadings of gray in-plump baroque shapes looking especially new. Silver jewelry returns as an important fashion, often accented with-pale stones. EARLY AMERICAN Early American Furniture is still gaining popularity everywhere for its warm relaxed informality. New finishes are lighter honey tones, rather than the usual deeper shades usually associated with this style. Appliance center, to use as room divider or against a wall, inr eludes washer-dryer, sink with dishwasher and garbage eliminator, oven and surface cooking units and storage sp'ace, too. eye, leathers for the new covered up look include smooth leather in both, highly-polished and matte- finished versions. Lightly grained leather and two-way brushed leather take to this silhouette, too, appearing in after-five as well as day-time shoes. Patent leather continues for fall and winter. The delicate heel, high and slender, is stiE most fashionable on dress shoes, but heels with slightly larger walking bases are found on shoes, for day-long wear. Among these are the three-inch high stacked leather heel for spectators, the Queen Anne heel, the slenderized cuban heel and the contoured wedge. "T"-straps ' and perforations reminiscent of the twenties and thirties appear often as trim. Bows, jet -beads, nailh'eads and leather strips placed like passe- mentrie braiding are also news.
