As a rookie in the American Hockey League last season, Harris was the cannon in Pittsburgh's struggling power play. The 23-year-old right winger will be blasting when the Hornets play their opener next Saturday in Hershey.

Harris has been enjoy. In? an excellent training ramp, probably due to his three weeks of skating be-fore arriving here. He has been working on a line with enter Ted Hampson and Claude LaForge, two Pittsburgh veterans. Harris spent most of last season teaming with Murray Hall and Irv Spencer. "The Duke has really been popping 'em in," said Eddie Bush, the new Pittsburgh coach.

Harris owns one of the hardest slap shots in hockey but he hasn't used it during the pre-season camp. "I've been working on the wrist shot, trying to get more control," Duke said. The wrist shot is fine for the finishing touch when a line is closing in on goal. However, when it comes to playing the point (the primary scoring position on the power play), Harris will stick to his slap shot. "I believe In It from a distance (for instance, the point)," Harris said.

"I believe In shooting as hard as you can. I'll tell you, it's a lot easier to slap the puck than to use your wrist." The husky forward reasons that the extra speed increases the possibility of the goaltender losing sight of the puck on Its way to the net. Harris is objective in discussing the big weapon. "You can definitely use the slap shot too much and maybe I did that at times last year but nobody told me to do things any differently," he said. There would have been a bonus for Harris last year if one more shot of any kind would have landed In an opposing net.

He has a bonus in his contract for a 20-goal season, but fell one shy. The one year of experience in the AHL has brightened his outlook for the coming campaing. "I think I definitely should have a better year," Harris said. Pittsburgh will play its last pre season exhibition Wednesday against the Montreal Canadians in Windsor, Ont 589 rkmenle.
