Reno gymnast reaches national Elite level Golf of prep golf Reno is not exactly known as the Mecca for budding young gymnasts, but 12-year-old Caitlin Quinby could be changing that. Competing for the Flips Olympic Gymnastic Academy, Quinby scored 71.95 points at the Region I competition in San Diego last weekend to win the Class 1 junior all-around title. Region I consists of California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. The victory easily qualified her for the Western Nationals in Houston, Texas May 14-16, but more importantly, her regional score was high enough to qualify her to compete on the Elite gymnastic level next year. Quinby will be the first elite gymnast from Nevada since Lori Davis retired from competition In 1979.

"That's an international caliber (of competition)," said Derlck Moellenbeck, one of the Flips' three Elite coaches. Quinby said she was surprised with the win. "I expected to place, but not that high." At San Diego, Quinby competed against 80 gymnasts and some of the nation's top teams such as SCATS and Gymnastic Olympica. In individual events, Quinby won the uneven parallel bars, 18.1 and the balance beam, 18.4; and placed second in the floor exercise. Quinby said her strongest events are the beam and bars.

She said she gets the most nervous when on the balance beam. "It's the easiest one to fall on," she said. Several other Reno Flips also scored above 68 points, the cutoff point for qualifying to the Western Nationals. Karl Hansen, 15, scored 68.25 points, competing in the senior division, and Christie Hansen, 12, scored 68.1 points. Stitser placed fourth on the balance beam and Hansen was seventh in the unevens.

"Both are feats In themselves," Moellenbeck said. 1 I of TM I I SVAV mm? qiFiir'Umiii .1 I I 1 1 Oil. Filter). rTX' ReaSan taxes, cold weather at VCk Paf and Ren0 Hlgh wlnnin8 the AAA zone golf championship. The Huskies, the two-time defending state champions seem ready to successfully defend their zone title today but second year coach Bill Houk isn't so sure. "I think in years past no one could touch Reno," Houk admitted. "But I don't think that's so true anymore." Houk's team was beaten once this year, when the Huskies were upset at Fallon. But the coach points out that Reed came within just six strokes of knocking off the champions in a dual meet earlier this month.

"It's a four-team race," he said. "Carson. Reno, Wooster or Reed could win it." Houk figures that a strong junior golfing program in Northern Nevada has taken awav much of Reno High's strength. "The tournaments for the vounger golfer have evened things up," Houk said. "Now bv the time they get to high school, most kids have "experience in good, tough tournaments.

And the tournaments are all over, not just in Reno High area." Houk said that Reno High used to alwavs win because the high school is closer to more golf courses and the students grow up playing golf. Last season the Huskies went undefeated but the top three members of the team graduated. The top golfer in Northern Nevada for the last two seasons. Dean Menante, was given a scholarship to the University of Nevada-Reno. A Menante Is still on the Huskies team, but it is younger brother Darrin Menante.

And Houk said that Darrin is not a clone of Dean. "They are totally different," Houk said. "Darrin isn't built anything like Dean. He's lankier, much more of a finesse player. He's also plaved some basketball.

Dean was huskier and was a football plav-er." Dean was a dominant force in prep golfing. The older Menante made the Reno varsitv as a freshman and was the zone medalist as a junior and senior. Houk figures Darrin "is a late bloomer" who hasn't yet reached his potential. Darrin was the team's No. 4 four golfer last year, but he missed both zone and state tournament competition because he broke his wrist.

But Darrin also has a lot of experience. There's still talk about the time six years ago when the 11-year old was playing in a junior tournament at the Washoe County Golf Course and while lining up a putt, a local television cameraman asked him if he would wait before putting so the film crew could set up. A patient, unruffled Menante waited patientlv and then with the camera rolling he calmlv sank the 23-foot putt. Without a trace of a smile he'walked to the cup and retrieved his ball. Reno High's top golfer this season is senior Mark Gilmartin.

He should be challenged bv Carson's top hope, Devon Neilson. and Reed's Steve Dolan. But unlike last year, there is no solid favorite for the lop medalist. The event will be staged at Wildcreek. the home course of Sparks High.

Houk considers the course the toughest in the area outside of Lake Tahoe. "The scores should be high," he said. "And reallv." I have no idea who's going to win it."
