BASEBALL WEDNESDAY, JULY 9. 2008 5E RENO TENNIS MAJOR LEAGUE NOTEBOOK Paris to D.C.: Serena's long commute for WTT debut Just a scare: Tigers' Willis has knee tendinitis ASSOCIATED PRESS DETROIT Dontrelle and the Detroit Tigers got good news Tuesday when a MRI ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE An MRI revealed Tuesday that spring training camp a month Detroit Tigers pitcher Dontrelle ago to work on his command. Willis has knee tendinitis. Willis was sent to the Tigers' suspension when he made disparaging comments about Anna Kournikova last month, lost 5-2 to Jan-Michael Gambill and Raquel Kops-Jones. Williams then teamed with Mashona Washington to beat Pelletier and Kops-Jones 5-4 in women's doubles.

"It was good to be out here in D.C. for the first time," said Williams, who stuck around a bit longer after playing to sign autographs. "It was awesome." The taxing day was not the usual routine for a professional athlete preparing for competition, but the WTT will take what it can get. The Kastles are the newest franchise in the 11-team league, which began its 33rd season this month, and the team's home matches are played in a temporary, stadium that has been erected in the middle of a downtown parking lot. During a break in the action, WTT co-founder Bil-lie Jean King stepped onto the court and auctioned off Super Bowl tickets.

"I always thought there should be a (women's) tennis tournament here," Williams said. "It's such a big city, and I have a lot of fans here." The match had been long sold out it is scheduled to be Williams' only home appearance with the Kastles this season and the intimate atmosphere and multicolored hardcourt were literally and figuratively half a world away from the grass of Centre Court at Wimbledon, where she lost to sister Venus in the grand slam final on BY JOSEPH WHITE ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON Three days after losing to her sister in tennis' showcase event, Serena Williams awoke Tuesday morning at her part-time home in Paris. She flew to London, where she had a layover of a few hours, then hopped a trans-Atlantic flight in which she "slept pretty much the whole way." Upon arrival in the nation's capital, she made an appearance at a youth tennis clinic and then held a news conference to promote the final duty of her very long day: her debut with the Washington Kastles of World Team Tennis. "It's kind of weird, but I'm still going," said Williams, whose body clock was closing in on midnight at the news conference. Five hours later, the world's fifth-ranked player showed no signs of jet lag as she pounded aces and service winners against No.

189 Marie-Eve Pelle-tier. Williams won seven of 10 games against Pelletier in a valiant comeback bid on behalf of the team, but it wasn't enough as the Kastles lost their home opener 22-19 to the Boston Lobsters. "I wasn't exhausted at all," Williams said. "1 felt like I could go another two sets or whatever." Under a crescent moon and before a standing room only Williams also played doubles and mixed doubles in her all-white outfit. She and Justin Gimelstob, who c.aused a stir and drew a one-match WTT revealed he has tendinitis in his right knee.

The Tigers said the pitcher had a cortisone shot to reduce inflammation and was fitted for a brace to provide support when he returns to Lakeland, later this week to resume a program designed to help him regain control. A month ago, the Tigers sent Willis to their spring training complex. The 2005 runner-up for the NL's Cy Young Award and 2003 NL Rookie of the Year gave up 2 1 walks in 1 1 V3 innings over four starts and a relief appearance. Detroit signed him a $29 million, three-year deal after acquiring him and Miguel Cabrera in a trade last winter with the Florida Marlins. IN OTHER Jemlla Weeks, the brother of Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks, agreed Tuesday to a minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics that includes a $1.91 million signing bonus.

Jemile Weeks, like his brother a second baseman, was taken by Oakland with the No. 12 pick in last month's amateur draft. Weeks hit .363 with 13 homers and 63 RBIs as a junior this year at the University of Miami. He was selected out of high school by Milwaukee on the eighth round of the 2005 draft but didn't sign. Oakland also agreed with its sixth-round pick, outfielder Tyreace House.

The Baltimore Orioles placed lefthander Adam Leewen on the 1 5-day disabled list Tuesday, the latest setback for the former first-round draft pick. The team said Loewen had re-injured the stress fracture in his left elbow the same injury that led him to have surgery that cost him most of the 2007 season. Baltimore did not give a timetable for with his family after he didn't make the' team as a starter or reserve. "If I go, I've got to get there at 6 a.m.' the same day I have to hit, and then I have to go right back," Guerrero said, speaking in Spanish to a reporter before Tuesday night's game at Texas. "It's better that I take my three days off and get ready for the second half of the season." Guerrero started the day hitting .289 with 15 homers and 49 RBIs.

Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt is on track to start Friday's game against, the Washington Nationals after having his previous turn in the rotation skipped because of a nerve problem in his lower back. Oswalt received a painkilling shot in the sciatic nerve in his lower back Saturday. Houston manager Cecil Cooper said the right-hander threw 35 to 40 pitches as part of a bullpen session Tuesday and emerged pain-free. "It was just to see how he felt," Cooper said. "It was great to see it felt great.

That brings a smile to my face. He didn't feel any pain, so that's a good thing. I think (the injury) is all behind him." at Cincinnati. Dukes is hitting .263 with six home runs and 20 RBIs in 52 games. Casto was optioned to Columbus on July 3 when Austin Kearns came off the DL.

Casto is hitting .180 with one home run and seven RBIs in 23 games for the Nationals. Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz reported no pain Tuesday, a day after he took his first on-field batting practice since injuring a tendon in his left wrist almost six weeks ago. "That was good news," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "We'll see how he feels at the end of the week and then we'll go from there." Ortiz will continue to take batting practice with the team and work up to the point where he can test his wrist with a swing similar to the one he injured it on in the ninth inning on May 30 in Baltimore. Vladimir Guerrero will not defend his title in the Home Run Derby during All-Star week.

The Los Angeles Angels slugger plans to spend the All-Star break next week Loewen's return. The 24-year-old was 0-2 with an 8.02 ERA in seven games and has already spent two months on the DL with elbow soreness. He initially suffered the stress fracture in May 2007. To take Loewen's roster spot, the Orioles recalled right-hander Alberto Castillo from Triple-A Norfolk. The 33-year-old Castillo was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1994 as a first baseman and had spent the past seven seasons in the independent leagues.

At Norfolk, he was 3-1 with a 2.05 ERA in 19 games. The Washington Nationals placed outfielder Elijah Dukes on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, one day before he will have surgery on his right knee. To take his place, Washington recalled outfielder Kory Casto from Triple-A Columbus. Dukes will have surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee Wednesday in Tampa, After the surgery, Dukes will undergo rehab for both the meniscus and a partial tear of his patellar tendon in the same knee.
