32 Reno Evening Gazette Monday, December 1, 1980 Local sports briefs With star trio on bench, Bucks win Stateline skier wins title SAAS FEE, Switzerland Cory Murdock of State-line, won the slalom event at pro skiing's Elvia Cup Sunday, his first victory since turning pro last winter. His win in the final against Peter Dodge of St. Johnsbury, Vt., gave the United States a sweep of the two-day meet, as Richie Woodworth of Peabody, Mass., took the giant slalom Saturday. Murdock, 22, beat pro standings leader Hans Hin-terseer of Austria in the quarterfinals before ousting Canadian rookie Greg Hann in the all-North American semifinals. "This is unquestionably the highlight of my sporting career," said Murdock after earning $15,000 in prize and bonus money. "This is more than twice what I've ever made in a year . . . it's unbelievable." Murdock's win put him in fourth place in the pro standings with 65 points. Woodworth and Hinterseer are tied for first with 95. Another Austrian, Andre Arnold, the reigning world pro skiing champion, dropped to third after losing in the first round Sunday. That is his worst ranking since he turned pro four years ago. The last American to win the pro skiing title was Hank Kashiwa in 1975. Boxers train at Caesars Lightweight contenders Howard Davis of Glen Cove, N.Y., and Johnny Lira of Chicago, who meet in a 10-rounder Dec. 6 at Caesars Tahoe, will hold workouts in the hotel-casino at Stateline. The fight will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Spectatcular. The card will begin at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 6 with television coverage beginning at 1:30 p.m. or 2 p.m. Carson boxer 'outstanding' Stacy Trivitt of the Carson Police Athletic League was named outstanding boxer in the 14- 15-year-old division of the fourth annual Pacific AAU Novice tournament at the Carson City Community Center Saturday. Trivitt won the 132-pound title by stopping Armando Iberra of Sunnyvale, Calif., in the second round. The outstanding fighter in the 16-19 age group was 132-pounder Lupe Sandoval of San Jose and the outstanding boxer in the 20-and-older division was lightweight James Alger of Chino, Calif. Division l-AA playoffs set By MICHAEL EMBRY Associated Press Writer LOUISVILLE, Ky. Eastern Kentucky Coach Roy Kidd believed his team deserved and earned its berth in the Division I-AA college football playoffs. Third-ranked Eastern Kentucky, the division's defending champion, accepted an at-large bid to the playoffs Sunday. The Colonels meet top-rated Lehigh University, 9-0-2, on Dec. 13 in Bethlehem, Pa. No. 1 ranked Grambling, representing the South, also accepted an invitation Sunday to the four-team playoffs. Grambling, 10-1, will meet No. 7 Boise State, of the West, on Dec. 13 in Boise, Idaho. The championship will be Dec. 20 at Hughes Field in Sacramento, Calif. College football INDAY NIGHT QEfllY Y Y Y le By ALEX SACHARE AP Sports Writer Boston Coach Bill Fitch can cope with his team losing to Milwaukee. After all, the Bucks are one of the strongest teams in the National Basketball Association and lead the Central Division with a 20-6 record. But losing to the Bucks Sunday night, when they were without three of their regulars . . . well, that was too much for Fitch to handle. "I can't say anything nice about my basketball team," Fitch said after his Celtics dropped a 107-105 decision to the Bucks even though Milwaukee stars Marques Johnson, Bob Lanier and Brian Winters missed the game because of injuries. "They only had eight guys, but they went out there and did the job," Fitch said of the Bucks. "They did what I like to see. They played together better than they might have if they had everyone." Sidney Moncrief filled in at Winters' guard spot and scored 23 points, Pat Cummings started for Johnson at forward and scored 10 and defensive standout Harvey Catchings opened at center in place of Lanier. Junior Bridgeman, playing his usual sixth-man role, led Milwaukee with 25 points. In other NBA games, the Phoenix Suns edged the Houston Rockets 117-114, the Chicago Bulls beat the Los Angeles Lakers 122-108, the Seattle SuperSonics topped the New Jersey Nets 113-89 and the San Diego Clippers defeated the Golden State Warriors 120-100. Milwaukee led 100-91 with three minutes to play, but Boston chipped away and pulled within two points on Chris Ford's 15-foot jumper with 13 seconds left. The Celtics then fouled Quinn Buckner, who missed both free throws, but the strategy failed to pay off when Boston was unable to come up with the tying basket. Bucks Coach Don Nelson, a former Celtic player, took his team out of its usual running game and into a pattern offense. "We wanted to be patient and not get into a run ning game," explained Nelson. "We wanted to spend our energy on defense and rest on offense, stay close and nurse the clock. We carried out our game plan perfectly." Freeman Williams scored all 24 of his points in the second and third quarters for San Diego, including nine in a 24-8 surge that gave the Clippers a 93-78 lead going into the final period. It was the third stright loss for Golden State and the fourth triumph in five outings for San Diego. Rookie guard Kyle Macy came off the bench and scored 14 points in an eight-minute stretch of the second half as Phoenix built a 99-90 lead with 7:12 left and then held off the Rockets. Walter Davis scored 25 points and Macy had an NBA-high 21 as Phoenix raised its record to 22-4, best in the Western Conference. After a slow start this season, which included a 21-10 setback to Akron in their second game, the Colonels finished in a flurry. Eastern Kentucky's only loss in its last nine games was 13-10 to arch-rival Weatern Kentucky. "At the beginning of the year I was wondering just how good a football team we were," he said. "But. after a slow start, I thought maybe we could be 7-4 or 8-3 at best. But after the Akron game we kept improving week to week." Kidd credited much of the team's improvement to the play of noseguard Buddy Moor and quarterback Chris Issac. The Colonels whipped Lehigh 30-7 in last year's championship game, but Kidd believes his squad will have a lot tougher time in the rematch. "The tables are turned around this year," he said. "Last year they beat Murray State (in the first round of the playoffs) and we were able to catch them, perhaps, overlooking us. But that certainly is not going to happen this year. "They've got to be an excellent team. They're ranked number one. They're the only undefeated team in our division. They'll be quite a challenge for us."
