Catania 5,410 Justice of the Peace Verdi Township man of the state Republican party, said Wednesday. "The Democrats just out-hustled us.

And I guess we'll have to give the devil his due now." "The quality of our candidates was better because we had a good recruiting effort," Beecher Avants, chairman of the state Democratic Party, said. "I have to admit we did much better up north than we expected. But we could feel it in our bones. It was coming." A few of the races were close, including a tight 13-vote victory by Democrat Matthew Callister over incumbent Assemblyman Jerry Fairchild, R-Las Vegas- and a 25-vote victory by Democrat Gene Porter over Republican Jim Wade in another Las Vegas Assembly contest. Cashell said the GOP might ask for a possible recount in these races.

Republican John Paul Laxalt, son of outgoing U.S. Sen. Paul Laxalt, lost in a race against attorney Ernie Adler for a Carson City Assembly seat. And in Las Vegas, Democratic Gov. Richard Bryan's brother-in-law, Bob Gaston, defeated incumbent Republican Assemblywoman Jane Ham.

Another incumbent ousted from the Assembly was Republican Bruce Bogaert of Reno, defeated by former state Democratic Party Chairman Ken Haller. John Carpenter 3,657 Margie Clark 545 Harold Baugh 3,093 Assembly District 34 From page SA Democrats took control of the Assembly by such a wide margin in what was thought to be a dead heat. Jeffrey said a strong effort by the Assembly Democratic Caucus figured in Democrats capturing most of the southern Nevada lower house seats. He said the caucus concentrated on recruiting strong candidates and developing professional campaigns. The investment paid off.

Dini added that party switches also may have helped Democrats gain seats. Two party switchers, from Democrat to Republican, lost their re-election tries: Gary Lee Roberts and Gene Collins, both of Las Vegas. Assemblymen moving up to the Senate and aggressive campaigning by many hand-picked Democrats, including former legislators called back to run, were also cited in the Democrat's favor. And, many of the Republican assemblyman elected in 1984 were vulnerable because they were swept into office on the coattails of Ronald Reagan's 1984 reelection and had little attraction on their own. "A lot of our assemblymen were trying to rest on their laurels and it didn't work," Bob Cashell, chair Justice of Peace John Marvel 4,423 Lanada James 1 ,738 Assembly District 36 Gaylan Spriggs 5,061 Gail Armstrong 3,391 Assembly District 38 Wadsworth Township Lany R.
