Concert review: Ringo was great; Winter and Squier really shined BY ROBERT PEREA rpereargj.com As she waited for the first couple to approach the alter, Saturday afternoon might have been the first time Sandra Van Scott was ever more nervous than the bride and groom. Van Scott, of the The Antique Angel Wedding Chapel in Reno, was on hand Saturday afternoon at PETCO at 5565 S.

Virginia St. to perform pet weddings. But she hadn't quite figured out how she would issue the pronouncement. "Should I now pronounce you canine and Van Scott asked. "I'm not sure yet how I'm going to do that." PETCO employee Rachel Yaworsky said the event, with Natural Balance pet food company as the host, was intended as a fun outing for people and their pets.

Although only four weddings were performed, Yaworsky said between 40 and 50 customers showed up for the reception afterward. Yaworsky and other PETCO employees handed out gift baskets arjd provided refreshments for the pets and their owners. "People got to talk to the food company reps and get their pictures from the wedding photographer," she said. "We'll definitely plan another one in the spring." Van Scott wrote the wedding vows herself. JAMES BALLRENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL look where you're sitting!" This brought laughter and applause from the entire crowd.

Ringo is athis best in moments like this, playing the emcee, tossing out a few funny stories then belting out an oldie-but-goodie that even the kids in the audience know the words to. The brand-rrew Reno Ballroom, a smaller venue, was probably the perfect setting for a more intimate show like this. Anything larger, the Events Center for instance, and the vibe would have been lost somewhere around row 30. The room itself is similar to the Silver Legacy's showroom and the staff is top-notch. When I ran into a snafu with my tickets, the box office straightened it out quickly and professionally.

As the crowd filed out, people of all ages could be heard singing "All We Are Saying, Is Give Peace A Chance." For just a split-second, it made me think about John Lennon, George Harrison and what might have been. But I digress. Ringo's formula is pretty simple.

The ex-Beatle gets up and sings a few tunes, then returns to his drum kit to let his bandmates shine for a few songs, before repeating the whole process. Each All Starr gets two solo performances then Ringo returns for some rollicking sing-alongs with the crowd. And it works. For the money, Friday's concert-goers essentially got six mini rock shows for the price of one, the set list peppered with classic rock hits spanning from the late '60s to the mid-'80s. Also on hand were Men At Work frontman Colin Hay, who did "Land Down Under" and "Who Can it Be Now," Average White Band bassist Hamish Stuart, who impressed with "Pick Up The Pieces," and Gary Wright, who dazzled with '70s soft-rock hits "Dreamweaver" and "Love is Alive." Gregg Bis-sonette, who may have been the most technically talented musician on stage, sat in on the other drum kit.

Bissonette found himself having to drum through a range of styles, but he moved seamlessly from one genre to another. None of this is to take away from Starr, who was clearly the big draw for all of us. Those expecting to relive a little Beatles magic got what they wanted, as the diminutive drummer engaged the audience between songs, even pulling out the old Beatles chestnut of poking good-natured fun at the people in the "cheap seats." "I see. You crowd are just watching the screen," he said, pointing to the large video monitors flanking the stage. "Just couldn't make up your mind about the tickets, could you? In fact, "Peace," which closed out the show, provided the most poignant moment of the night. Things like that are the reasons most of the at capacity crowd showed up, and they were certainly not let down. But here's the thing: Starr's bandmate, Edgar Winter, absolutely and unequivocally rocked the house.

Winter played like a man possessed, bringing the loudest and most sincere standing ovation of the night for his all-instrumental rock anthem, "Frankenstein." Winter, a native Texan, played at least four instruments throughout the night, includ-' ing congas, keyboards an alto sax and a baritone sax, and he was clearly having a great time. If Reno crowds appreciate one thing, it's a little sincerity with their classic rock, and Winter was the most sincere of all Friday night. Billy Squier, who seems to have a particularly rabid fan base in Northern Nevada, kept things going with a high-energy version of "The Stroke." It's not a stretch to say that Squier, now 58, has aged very well both physically and musically. His voice was strong and his energy contagious as he jumped around stage like a man half his age. Reno would do very well to find a way to bring Squier back in a solo setting.
