Sf Smoker at S. A. A. o. The first Bmoker for club members was given last night at the S.

A. A. C. and was attended by between 400 and 500 members, who were entertained with a program made up of music, singing, athletic sports, wrestling and boxing. The boxing matches were between Edward Peterson and Cleorge Douglass, Edward Bankston nnd Wilson Jessmore.

Spokane Wins. Big Chief Rellly's braves pounded out their seventh straight victoryyesterday and took the second game of the series with Butte, 7 to 4. There was considerable luck in the Victory, as well as long; hard drives by the batters on both sides. Up to tlie fourth Inning Butte had four runs, with Spokane marked for one. Bandelln lost control and walked three men, filling the bases.

Then Frary came to bat and shoved one to the left field fence, scoring the three on bases and getting second himself. This tied the score. Again, In the sixth, Bandelln went to the bad, and from that time on was hit by the Indians. But in batting the pitcher made up for his slab work, as he got three hits out of four times at bat. Dammann was easy for the Miners at times, but the splendid support given htm made up for the findings of the visitors.

Butte made several costly errors, but recuperated with two fust doubles by Runkle. The Score. R. H. P.O.

a wicked breach of order and of peace. dead is that old joyous bliss of sitting by the tumbling set to kiss. Oh, what ir pity that in Atlantic City; of all the places in the world, the order should go forth in bitter condemnation of linrpJa osculation. They posted up a sign to make young lovers pine for other sandy spots along Atlantic's coast. But fate is cruel in- STERNS TRIED Martin G.

Fought His Battle With Mother and Mortgage in Mind SAN FKANCISCO, Sept. 9. That alt professional boxers are not unfeeling. vacuous ne'er-do-wells, with no consideration save for their own condition is strikingly exemplified hy the sentiment that moved llattltug Nelson, the Chicago boy. In his sensational battle In this city with Eddie Ilanlon, In which, after taking the most severe punishment for 14 rounds, he beut Ilanlon Into a state of helplessness ami forced the California lighter's seconds to throw up the sponge.

When Nelson went Into the ring his mind was full of the following message: "My Dear Son: Remember we have a mortgage on the furm and If you win will be able to pay It and be out of debt. I am praying that you are successful Lour loving "MOTHKR" It Is no snap lighting a fellow who Is thinking only of home ami a good old mother, something that ilanlon learned to bis sorrow. Nelson fought like a man who hail his mind set on lifting the mortgage and when the battle was over declared that the message from his mother was uppermost In his thoughts throughout the contest. The day nfter tbe fight Nelson sent a check to his mother nnd the mortgage was lifted. THE RTOKANE PRESB: SEPTEMBER 1304.

AT OLD CONEY ISLAND deed; tlie ukase has spread seed. Of spooning there'll be no more, upon the tide-swept shore of Asbury, Manhattan. Arvprne or Rockaway. Tho police have had the word; their voices shall be heard. Now, who has got a chance for an August day romance, with bathing skirts below the knee and holding hands forbidden? What tyrants are our mayors and how foolish are their fears.

Hereafter when it's dark we cannot even spark, unless we sit upon the porth with pa and mother near. And as for they would throw us in a cell! The bubbling billows weep as on the sand they sweep. How lonesome are they without the "Oh!" and and "Don't!" Tlie surf was made to bathe in, and not "for summer lovin." Tlie new good catechism of modern Puritanism, having been accepted generally, has yet a great exception. Con ey island is still open for spooners fond devotion. Here they'll not send up for life for kissing your own wife, or, indeed, the girl to whom you've whispered foolish words of love.

At Coney they rather encourage than disparage. Now, isn't this a mess? And cm you ever guess what is to the end of this movement for reform? Will it be their bitter fate that our young will never mate? MARI.EN E. PEW. HOO-KOO AT FAIR ST LOUIS, Sept. Order of Hoo-Hoo, the well known social and fraternal organization of lumbermen and their friends, began Its annual convention in St.

Louis today. The order delights in odd numbers and unlucky signs and lias the black cat as its official insignia. Following out its usual custom, the convention was opened promptly at 9 minutes past 9 o'clock today, this being the ninth day of the ninth month. The members were in a particularly Jovial mood when the discovery was made that this was Friday and that the convention was the 13th held by the order. In calling tbe gathering to order the grand snark of tbe universe reminded tbe members of these auspicious circumstances and predicted one of the most successful gatherings in the history of the organization.
