ASKS MUCH AND GIVES LITTLE Sacramento's Policy in Dealing With Its Neighbors Daily the Evidence Accumulates Tha Shows the Capital IB Dominated by CommeroiaJifjn Sacramento Is constantly reaching out for Yolo county trade, ft organ izes excursions for that purpose, I urges Yolo county to appropriate raors than share for tlis construction of a bridge that will en able Yolo county people to go to the state capital to purchase their sup plies. It appeals to Yolo county for exhibits for tha state fair and urges Yolo county people to atten'fl and in sure Its financial success. In a thou sand different ways It endeavors to profit from the industry, enterprise and resources of Yolo county ant what does It give us In return; Nothing so far as you can notice it. No effort is spared to induce the farmer, the fruit grower, the mechanic and the ordinary laborer to spent money with its business men that should be spent with local tradesmen For a time while the state was committed to the policy of aiding district fairs. Yolo and Sacramento counties comprised an agricultural district.

Sacramento was never known to make an exhibit except in a horse race, at fair held in Woodland, and, with a few notable exceptions, Sacramento people never attended a district fair held in this city. During -the last county fair Marys- vllle and.Chico were better represented than Sacramento. Every day furnishes additional and conclusive evidence that, as a rule, the business men of Sacramento do not come to Yolo county unless they sea a chance to help their business. There Is no reciprocal feeling in their rela- tlons with Yolo county people and industries. AH the Interest they manifest seems to be prompted by a spirit of commercialism.

MOVING PICTURES Capable of Filling a Worthy Place in the CommuDity Practically everything that has appeared in these columns in relation to movingNpictures has been in the form' of an advertisement. It may therefore interest the public to know that the "Democrat" believes that there Is good reason why they should be popular, and that they should fill a long-felt want. We deprecate the feeling entertained by a few that because the proprietors of the moving picture shows appear to be prospering that the shows are not a good thing for the town. They furnish cheap amusement. Patrons are pleasantly entertained without being detained until a late hour, They can go and come as they please.

Of course, our endorsement does not include views showing brutish extremes of drunkenness, horrible crimes and unpleasant details of vice. These shourd not only be frowned upon, but they should be prohibited. Such features as scenes of travel, depicting the natural scenery of the world, are very instructive as well as entertaining and ought to be encouraged. The educational effect Is good. Of course, humor Is all right and It is a restful and healthful diversion, but It should be of the clean kind.

EXTERMINATING PESTS IN NATIONAL FORESTS Interesting results have just been announced by the Forest Service as B. result of the campaign conducted in southern California by Stanley E. Piper, expert of biological survey of the Department of Agriculture, to exterminate ground squirrels and gophera. Extensive experiments were tried to determine the best means of killing off these destructive little animals, and It was found that most effective results were obtained by using poisoned green or ripening barley heads. The squirrels are exceedingly fond of this green herbage, and eagerly ate the poisoned food placed along their runway were also made with oats, wheaX, barley, raisins, prunes, dried apples, and cracked corn, but these did not prove so successful.

While green barley proved most successful for poisoning ground squirrels, yet the difficulty of procuring a sufficient supply in all localities led to dried barley grain being tried. The grain was treated with strychnine sulphate, cassbarine, and eggs, and although this combination proved very destructive to the squirrels, It had practically no effect upon doves and quail. In fact, a deliberate attempt was made to poison these birds at their watering places, but no bad effect suited. The poisoned grain was also used in fields grazed over by sheep and produced no III effects whatever. The experiments also proved that gophers were partial to ralsfns and dried apples, and these were successfully used In the poison experiment It was found that by sprinkling the nppies or raisins with the strychnine (solution, as effective results were produced as could he obtained by Inserting the poison into the fruit.
