H. Porterfleld. manager ef foreign advertising. Mary McCann, Heroine. Here's to Mary McCann, Irish.

Mary came to this country two months ago from Ireland and Is hut 17 years of age. She was quite sick on her arrival and was taken to the hospital at Island where the Slocnm steamer disaster occurred. At the time when the burning wreck drifted Into shore the girl was convalescent, being Just able to be about. This Is the story as It came out a few days ago at the coroner's Investigation: The call to duty and daring came to Mary McCann on that fateful afternoon when women and children were drowning almost within touch of the land. She waa week and ill.

She was poor save for a brave heart in her bosom. She was a stranger in a land of strangers. No kin of hers was in danger. Why should she endanger her life? Five times she swam to the rescue of children. Each time she brought ana to the shallow waters near the shore, where she turned them over to willing hands.

She essayed a sixth attempt but was caught underneath and cried for help. When taken from the wnter the little girl was fainting and more dead than alive from exhaustion. The coroner's Jury made up a purse for Mary McCann and she has been given a medal. Brave little colleen! She had no thought of money or medals. The cry for help went straight to her tender heart.

While wrung their hands and wept over the Spectacle of strangled babies Mary McCann, heroine, battled with death to them. She could die in weakness trying to gave, but she could not see the children drown frail little emigrant from Erin. And learned men talk of the danger of Immigration to this country! May Ireland send us many another Mary McCann. In Chicago the city administration is engaged In a real crusade against the little gambling joints where "hand book making" is going on. The hand book operator gets his quotations over the telephone and his natrons are largely made up of clerks and laboring men who have been inoculated with the gambling mania.

These young gamblers have mothers and sisters and sweethearts, and the Chief aides in eradicating the evil are the women who have been effected. Every day's mall of the police department brings letters telling pathetic stories of women whose sons or brothers or fiances have been caught in the net of the bookmakers. Through the medium of these letters over 140,000 worth of telephones have been taken out, depriving the telephone companies of a revenue of 176,000. Good! It aeems peculiarly fitting that the women who have been wronged by these petty gambling resorts should be the instruments by which the dens may be located and suppressed. The man who haa no one dependent upon him may be permitted to gamble to his topmost desire.

There are very few such. The real sufferers are the mothers and sisters dependent upon these reckless young men and the sweethearts whose romances have been wrecked by their fiances. Judge Parker was emerging from his bath when he received the first news of his nomination. Certainly the democracy can boast that it has nominated a "clean man."
