TRACK-NCAA Indoor (ESPN) 9:30 p.m. BOXING-Top Rank (ESPN) Midnight Wrestlemania III draws largest sports crowd ever Wrestlemania III has become the largest indoor sportsentertainment event, the World Wrestling Federation announced Monday. The event, which takes place Sunday at 1 p.m. PST at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, has surpassed the old indoor attendance record of 87,500, set by the Rolling Stones at the New Orleans Superdome in 1981. More than 88,000 people will fill the Silverdome Sunday.

Tickets, which were priced as high as $100 for ringside seats, went on sale in early February in an arena that holds the attendance records for the largest NBA crowd and the largest indoor Super Bowl audience. Mike Abington, executive director of the Pontiac Silverdome, said, "We are proud of the attendance records which we have set with the Pistons and the NFL as well as with rock concerts, but Wrestlemania III will be our biggest attendance by far." The Pistons are Detroit's National Basketball Association team. Boxing British heavyweight boxer Frank Bruno returns to the ring tonight in Wembley, England, against American James "Quick" Tillis and a second title shot in his sights. Bruno, 25, will box for the first time since he was stopped by Tim Witherspoon of the United States in his first bid to win the World Boxing Association title last July. Promoters have promised Bruno that an impressive performance against Tillis, 29, will provide a springboard for another title bid against American Mike Tyson, the World Boxing Council and WBA champion.

Tennis Fifth-seeded Kathy Rinaldi did not capitalize on two match points, then rallied to beat Stephanie Rehe, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6, in Monday's opening round of the $150,000 Virginia Slims of Washington women's tennis tournament in Fairfax, Va. In the evening's final match, Canada's Carting Bassett beat Elly Hakami of Tiburon, 7-5, 6-1. Odds: 6 to 5. 2. Syracuse, 30-6, was ranked 10th in the Associated Press final regular-season poll. This team peaked at precisely the right time, led by junior center Rony Seikaly, the tournament's No. 2 scorer (104 points) and No.

3 rebounder (37). Eliminating pre-tournament favorite North Carolina 79-75 Saturday probably silenced whatever Orangemen critics were left. SU's confidence level is sky high. Providence's 88-73 victory over Georgetown Saturday certainly helped. Syracuse was 0-3 against the Hoyas and 2-0 against the Friars this season.

Freshman Derrick Coleman and UNLV's Gilliam lead the tournament with 42 rebounds each. Sherman Douglas is one of the few point guards as quick as UNLV's Mark Wade. Seniors Howard Triche and Greg Monroe supply just the right dose of experience. The Orangemen have probably the thinnest bench in the Final Four (Michael Brown and Rodney Walker undoubtedly will be watching Saturday's game with some regrets), though reserve Stevie Thompson was the unsung hero in the victory over North Carolina and Derrick Brower is a joke only at the foul line. Of the Final Four teams, Syracuse relies the least on the three-point shot (SU had 91 three-point field goals this season; UNLV had 281, Providence 256 and Indiana 118).

A few questions: Will the Orangemen's comparative disdain for the three-point shot be a blessing or a curse? Can Seikaly continue to stay out of foul trouble? If Syracuse goes all the way, who will write coach Jim Boeheim's biography? Odds: 2 to 1. 3. Indiana, 28-4, was ranked fourth in the AP final regular-season poll. This is a typical hard-working, fundamentally sound Bobby Knight team. The only Hoosier who shot worse than .500 from the field this season was All-America guard Steve Alford.

But he was 95 for 181 from three-point range. Backcourt mate Keith Smart has improved down the stretch and is a dangerous streak shooter. Center Dean Garrett and forwards Daryl Thomas and Rick Calloway form a well-balanced but not overpowering front line. There is not much quality on the bench. That could be fatal in a track meet against UNLV.

Knight's bully tactics won't work against these referees. A few questions: Does Knight have anything in his wardrobe besides red sweaters? And if he wears large, why doesn't Adidas send him a box of extra-large? Has Alford ever had a hair out of place? Is John Feinstein (author of "Bob Knight: A Season On the rooting for or against the Hoosiers? Odds: 5 to 2. 4. Providence, 25-8, was ranked 26th in the final AP regular-season poll. It is this year's Cinderella team.

The Friars lost twice to Syracuse during the Big East season, but the Orangemen shouldn't be overconfident. Providence barely made it past the second round with a 90-87 overtime victory over Austin Peay, but the Friars beat Alabama-Birmingham, Alabama and Georgetown by a total of 58 points in their other three tournament games. This is clearly a team playing its best when it matters the most. The Friars are the best foul-shooting team in the Final Four (.781 compared to Indiana's .769, UNLV's .709 and Syracuse's They play pressure defense, and coach Rick Pitino uses 10 players to keep everyone fresh. Providence is very strong at guard with Billy Donovan and Delray Brooks.

The return of No. 2 point guard Carlton Screen from arthroscopic knee surgery was a boost. There is not much size or strength up front, though they surprised Georgetown in Saturday's victory. Hard-working David Kipfer is the top rebounder with only 5.4 per game. x-Edmonton 46 22 5 97 345 260 Calgary 44 28 2 90 301 263 x-Winnipeg 38 28 8 84 255 249 Los Angeles 28 37 8 64 291 309 Vancouver 25 41 8 58 253 294 x-clinched playoff spot Monday's Games Edmonton 7, New Jersey 6 St.
