During the show, Letterman spoke on the phone with two of Peterson's assistants before getting connected with the mayor. "How many assistants does this guy got, for God's sake?" Letterman told the audience.

In an on-air conversation with Peterson, Letterman quipped: "How about this: What if we change the name of that to the Dave Letterman Expressway?" "You know, Dave, I will tell you, I like that idea," Peterson said. Letterman had been saying he'd pay $10 million for the renaming rights an idea that really appealed to the mayor. But on the show, Letterman pledged only to pay new signs. What happened to the $10 million?" Peterson asked. That's a different telephone call," Letterman replied.

The bit ended with band leader Paul Shaffer singing and dancing an ode to Indianapolis and the idea of having the expressway named for his boss. Grant this talk show geek one wish, yeah, yeah, yeah, urged Shaffer. Letterman grew up in Indi anapolis and graduated from Ball State University in Muncie.
