During his vacation at the Virgin Islands last week, Noll ran into only one day of rain. And when he came back to Pittsburgh, rain washed out a golf match in which he had accepted a challenge from two near-scratch experts, Bert Gookin and Merle Gilliland.

Three years ago, the Steeler coach took one look at his newly-inherited football team and swept it clean. As if he were washing down a ratty, old estate, Noll's first seasons were strictly janitorial.

He wiped and scrubbed, digging away at the dirt that had accumulated over years of failure and ineptitude. He rid himself of the old furnishings and resorted to every available means of acquiring new ones. He bought, sold, traded he even sorted through rummage sales. It was a complete refurbishing. Now, at last, Noll can shed his mop and sponge.

When he packs for Wednesday's opening of a 0 training camp at Latrobe's St. Vincent College, Noll will need only a stack of rags. His work has been reduced to polishing. "We're thinking championship," Noll admitted. "I'm satisfied with the potential this club has.

In my first year, the potential wasn't much. We've made great progress. Our big goal is to realize our potential." Theirs is a potential that last year swept them into the AFC Central Division title swirl until experiencing a late collapse. They wound up at 6-8, their best record in eight years. With a taste of championship pressure on their tongues, Noll hopes the team he's developed has swallowed a sense of maturity.

More than anything Noll can teach, lessons of experience are what now stand crucial in determining Steeler fortunes. "Our draft of the past few years should pay off this year," said Noll. "Our veterans have become just that veterans. Most of our team has played together for three years." Once the 38 first-year men and 13 assorted others who report to camp on Wednesday are joined on Sunday by the 40 remaining squad members, Noll will begin his polishing job. The Stcders were victimized last year by fumbles, interceptions and penalties and one blunder seemed to hurt worse than another.

In more than a few of their losses, misplays and foul play meant the difference. Noll is going to rub hottest at the errors. "Mistakes are what has hurt os in the past," he said. "We played well in our ballgamcs last year. We competed with everyone.

Mistakes are what lost the games for us." So Noll will turn his training camp into a mass tune-up. Workouts will be geared to establishing a pattern of consistencyto insure that proper habits are mastered and maintained. Rookies, for the first time in Noll's era, seem to have assumed a background role in the overall tableau. "That's like talking about a freshman in high school trying to win a varsity spot," Noll related.
