Va. Site Will Be In Full Swing In 2 Years By WILLIAM A. DOYLE the Martinsburg Monster isn't! Q. My broker always puts my Social Security number on the confirmation slips he sends me when I bay stock.

But it is not on the slips I get when I sell. I presume my number is listed so that, when my broker reports my purchases to the Internal Revenue Service, they can check up on my capital gains. But how can the IRS tell what I gained or lost, if my number is not on my sell slips? u. 1 characteristics of mutual funds. A.

At least, not yet You must give your broker your number so that it can be used for taxpayer identification purposes on dividends you re ceive The broker turns your number over to the revenooers and with their electronic data processing equipment they can be sure that you haven forgotten to re port dividends when you file your tax return.

It's on the confirmation slip you get when you buy stock because the brokerage firm sometimes collects dividends for you. There's no need for it to be on the sell slips, because then you no longer own the stock. The IRS electronic "giant brain," headquartered in Mar-tinsburg, W. is a mighty efficient thing. In a couple of: years, when it is in full opera tion, it will catch everyone who neglects to report dividends, salaries, etc.

And the revenooers have been making noise about future plans to check capital gains and losses resulting from the sale of stocks and other "capital assets" through the same system. Q. Are there any mutual funds which invest their assets in real estate, rather than in stocks andor bonds? If there are, ran you name some in your column or advise me how to contact them? A. There are a fair number of what are known as "real estate investment trusts" around. They have most of the space. Some people would im mediately accuse me of "tout ing." So, the natural thing for you to do is ask my broker.

Q. I bought Kshareiof stock at $103 and watched it go way up. But when it dropped $42 in one week I sold at $136. Now it's going np again and its prospects look good. My son thinks I should leave the money in the bank but I am tempted to buy back 10 or 15 shares.

What do you think? A. You've had a nice, profitable experience with a high fly er in the market place. Without getting bogged down in the merits of an individual stock, I get the impression that you get mighty nervous about price changes. I doubt that this kind of ac tion is suited for you. Quick in and-out trades produce ulcers more often than profits.
