Ailing boys frock team 3rd of Algona's Bulldog Relays 10 AH May 10, 1972 Humboldt, An in jury-ridden Humboldt track team finished third behind Class AA school Charles City and conference rival Eagle Grove at the Bulldog relays Monday at Algona. The Wildcats got their usual stellar performance from Duane Nelson and added a first by hurdler Dennis Hart in the meet postponed from Saturday because of rain and cold. Nelson finished far ahead of the field in the mile run and paced himself to a 4:37 time, then later anchored the medley team to a 3:37.8 win. In the medley Terry Ruby, Mike Stensland and Scott Walters gave Nelson the lead and he cruised to a 2:01.6 clocking in the half. Hart grabbed first in the high hurdles in 15.5 and got third in the 180 lows with a time of 21.5.

Humboldt competed without the services of three front-line runners, and two others were used sparingly. Freshman quarter-mller Tony Nielsen suffered a muscle pull in physical education class which makes his future prospects uncertain. Sprinters Scott Murray and Jim Greene dit not compete at Algona and Paul Larson, one of the team's top 440 threats, did not run at all although he took second in the long jump. Gene Crist sprained an ankle after his first race and was unable to continue. In field events Jerry Davis unleashed his best throw of the season (152-2) to take second in the discus behind Webster City weight star Steve Wilson.

Mike Allen leaped 5-10, also a personal high, to get second in the high jump, and Larson went 18-5 to earn his runner-up spot in the long jump. Randy Thompson got third in the shot with a heave of 44 feet and Mike Vandenberg took fourth in the pole vault at 12-2. Vandenberg came home with another fourth place finish-a 10.8 clocking in the 100-yard dash. Terry Brownfield ran a 2:09.3 HOW THEY FINISHED Class A Charles City 107 Eagle Grove, Humboldt 70 Clear Lake Webster City 34 Spencer JV 13 for fourth in the open half. Fifth place points were added by Scott Walters with a 25.1- second open 220 and by Lynn Hagar in the two-mile run.

Aside from the winning mile medley, three relay teams came in third for Humboldt-880, mile and two mile. Terry Ruby, Scott Walters, Gene Crist and Jerry Davis ran the 880. Ruby, Shane Albertson, Jeff Duffy and Kevin Brownfield clocked 3:37.8 in the mile and Albertson, Terry Brownfield, Duffy and Kevin Brownfield finished in 8:42.3 in the two mile. The 440 relay team of Dennis Hart, Mike Stensland, Kevin Brownfield and Mike Vandenberg ran 46.5 for fourth. Eagle Grove's 880 relay team set the only Class A mark with a 1:32.6 time.

Aside from Benda, Humboldt's individual scores were not outstanding. Tim Cahill carded a 44, Dave Knudsen shot 46 and John Good finished with 49. Marty Christensen recorded a non- counting 52.

Algona got 41'sfromRonMan- ske and John Pitman, 42 from Dana Kain and 45 from Jim Cubit. Humboldt's junior varsity lost to the Algona JV by a slightly narrower margin, 189-194. Iowa Falls and Humboldt are expected to battle for the team title at the district track meet Friday at Algona. First two finishers in each event at district automatically qualify for the state outdoor track meet May 27. A third place time or distance which equals or exceeds the second poorest first place mark in any other district also qualifies, along with third and fourth place finishers who better established state standards. Teams competing in the district meet include Algona, Algona Garrigan, Belmond, Clarion, Clear Lake, Forest City, Hampton, Lake Mills, Mason City Newman, Iowa Falls and Humboldt. Racing under less than favorable conditions, the "Kingfish" 'Cuda of Larry Arnold twice shattered the strip record in funny car match race action against the Mickey Thompson Pinto Sunday at Humboldt County Dragway.

On a cold track and with temperatures in the Arnold dropped the first round to Dale Pulde in the Mickey Thompson car, turning a slow 9.57 over the course against the Plnto's winning 6.93. But in round two, the Memphis-based "Kingfish" cranked out a quick 6.19 pass to break the old standard of 6.80, held by Mr. Norm's Challenger, by .61 second. The Pinto lost with Sophs help against Laurens, St. Edmond a 6.77, also below the old standard.

Not satisfied with his performance, Arnold loaded up his stroker motor and ripped off a 5.88 pass that smashed his own record set minutes earlier. The Mickey Thompson car turned a respectable 6.74 to take the loss. The new record holder has established itself as one of the nation's top funnies, having won the funny car title at the Ontario, Supernatlonals earlier this season. In super stock action, the Ascherl and Bailey '57 Chevy wagon from Buncombe dipped to within a second of the national record to take the eliminator title. The 2-door stopped the GTO of RonBeckstrom, Hornick, in the finals.

Allan Zimmerman of Panama took the modified eliminator crown by driving his Chevy- powered D-altered Austin past the E-MP Nova of Tom Vestal, Glennvllle, Minn. His winning time was 10.51 seconds. Gary Foster of Fort Dodge picked up his second stock car eliminator title in three races as he drove his to victory with a 13.00 pass. In Hot Rod racing, Richard Erickson, Wesley, took class one in his '66 GTO, Gerald Balek drove his 327 Chevy from Blairsburg to the class two trophy, and Joy Davis, a young lady from Auburn, bested her all-male competition to win Hot Rod three in her 200-horse Camara. Emmetsburg biker Pat Payne won the bike trophy on his 750 Honda.

Boys prep for sectional golf with triangular win With a big boost from two sophomores the Humboldt boys golf team edged Laurens and easily handled St. Edmond in a triangular Tuesday afternoon at Hurnboldt. Bill Benda carded his usual 37 (Benda has shot 37's in seven of the last eight duals or triangular meets) to take meet medalist honors and provide the winning margin, but sophs Tim Greene and Mike Newell made, big contributions. Greene fired off a 40-stroke round and Newell chipped in with Humboldt's boys golf team finished fifth in the North Central Conference golf meet Saturday afternoon at Algona, 15 strokes behind champion Iowa Falls. The Wildcat foursome was led by Bill Benda who fired an 81 for the 18-hole tourney.

Benda shot a 43 over the first nine but came back with a 38 on the second round. Iowa Falls took the team title with a balanced group of scores, none of them above 83. The Cadets were led by Dean Coe's 79, followed by 82's from Ken Bowman and all-conference football player Kim Taylor, and an 83 from all-conference basketball pick Ron Anderson, Eagle Grove, led by tournament medalist Terry Tomke's 76, shared runner-up honors with Webster City. Fifth man Marty Christensen finished with 90. The three teams finishing below Humboldt-Clear Lake, Clarion and Hampton-were well off the pace, trailing the leaders by 40-60 strokes. Humboldt girls snare title in conference golf tourney Playing the best they have this season the Humboldt girls golf squad came away with the conference championship by a three stroke margin Saturday at Clear Lake. A 48 by Deb Nielsen, her best round of the year in competition, paced Humboldt to a 204 total, tops in the six-team field. Coach Marv Buhr also got good rounds from the other three girls on the scorecard-Marajo HOW THEY FINISHED Humboldt 204 Iowa Falls 207 Hampton 213 Eagle Grove 226 Clear Lake 231 Clarion 247 Buhr, Sue Olson and Pam Duffy.

Marajo Buhr fired an even 50, Sue Olson shot a 52 and Pam Duffy carded a 54. Jeanne Mersch finished with a non- counting 58. Miss Nielsen tied with Deb Lux of Clear Lake and Pam Sietesma of Hampton for tournament medalist honors. Miss Lux won a three-hole playoff for the title and after two additional holes Miss Sietesma earned the runner-up title. The 204 team total was Humboldt's best of the season, nine strokes better than the 213 recorded in a dual meet at Pocahontas.

42, a total matched by senior Tim Cahill, as the Wildcats topped runner-up Laurens 161-163. St. Edmond finished with 176. scores for Humboldt were 43 by John Good and 44 by Dave Knudsen. Each team used six players, with top four scores counting.

Wildcat regular Marty Christensen was unable to play. After a dual meet at Clarion Wednesday afternoon the Wildcats will prepare for the sectional tournament Saturday morning at Humboldt Country Club. Humboldt will be one of the top teams in the eight-team field, from which two squads qualify for the district tourney Saturday, May 20, at Humboldt. Based on the past performance Eagle Grove is the sectional favorite. The Eagles, led by Terry Tomke, boast a 9-0 dual meet mark and were runners-up in the conference tournament.

Wildcat golf coach Rod Hakeman reports that Dows will also field a strong team. Sectional competitors are Belmond, Twin Rivers, Clarion, Rolfe, Boone Valley, Eagle Grove, Dows and Humboldt.
