Adolf Anderssen, a German math teacher, established himself as the best player in the world.

Not until recently, however, has England produced its own cadre of grandmasters. In recognition of this new stature the Greater London Council and the brokerage firm Phillips Drew jointly sponsored this 14-man event to restore the foggy city as a center of world chess. Nobody escaped without defeat in a hard-fought event with a low percentage of draws (46). In tying for first at 8.5 points with Ulf Andersson and Viktor Korchnoi, Anthony Miles made the greatest achievement ever by a British player. But 14-year-old Nigel Short, who finished last with 2 points (4 draws, 9 losses) was the darling of the local press and drew a full house for his second-round encounter with a Soviet defector.

Nobody knew if this sport would attract any spectators or be of interest to anyone besides the players simply because it had never been done before. Until then matches between two players were common, but this event marked the birth of modern NxB 34 Nl B4 35 KxP KM In Love," "Baby Please Have A Heart," "But Baby" and probably Taxi's best entry, "Make a New Plan." These tunes have a sophistication that eludes many local groups. The band's execution of the music is clean and tasteful. Taxi is also big on Eagles tunes such as "The Long Run" and "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks." They come as close to the originals as possible.

Although enjoyable and apparently hard-working, Taxi has a problem: it lacks balanced talent. The group is centered entirely around songwriter and master showman Trujillo. Without him, the group would be lost. Attempts at brilliance by other players just don't match his efforts. Keyboardist Manning, for example, occasionally throws in some fancy electronics, only to have the Cars song "She's My Best Friend's Girl" sound like the theme from "Star Wars." Could the band find a way to match Trujillo, they could open a major concert in town.

The band has loosened up since previous visits to the Hayloft, but with Trujillo's exception they still offer only a mediocre stage show. Taxi plays again tonight at 10 at the Hayloft, a growing establishment that is supporting local bands. KN4 White Resigns P-R5 Reno is basically on a starvation diet when it comes to rock and roll. Between the occasional concerts booked into town, many rook fans rely on several of Reno's own bands for entertainment. Some are good, and others aren't.

Taxi, however, is a standout. With this group, Reno has a reputable, professional entry into the rock industry. Taxi's biggest advantage is that it has a stable of songs that are not only original, but very good. Friday evening a small yet receptive crowd gathered at a former country music club, The Hayloft on Wells Avenue, to listen to Taxi grind out its impressive array of tunes. Many of the fans are repeat customers for the group.

Taxi's second advantage is leader Gilbert Trujillo, a young songwriter who handles guitar and singing chores. The band also includes Dan George on drums. Bob McNamarra on bass, and Bobby Crewz on rhythm guitar and Michael Manning on keyboards. Trujillo has a good voice that adapts well to material by many popular contemporary artists Eagles, Cars, Toto in addition to Taxi's own songs.
