Molly Mayfield Blow In Face Missed Mark I know you aren't supposed to go around hitting other gals but please tell me if you don't think I had reason to. My fiance and I were at this party given for us soon after we announced our engagement. She brought up the incident of when her Dad caught them smooching on the sofa and how he chased Larry out. She told me that I was a "lucky girl" to have landed such a lover. She said no other boy has ever given her the thrills that dear, darling Larry had. "Remember the night at the lake, Larry, when we went Oh, Helen, looked like a Greek god in the moonlight!" the miserable witch purred. That got me, Molly! I hauled off with my handbag and smacked her full in the face.

Then I pulled her hair until someone not Larrypulled me away. By that time she was screaming, "Help me, Larry, help me, dahling!" I was so mad I stomped out and walked all the way home. Larry is very upset with me, and says somebody put her up to this and I had no right to get mad, and should have laughed it off. Some of my friends say I gave her what she deserved, and some say I acted like a fishwife. What do you think? Helen I think that while won the fight physically, you lost It socially.

The girl showed bad taste; you showed worse. She was making herself ridicuJous; why didn't you help her along? Why didn't you smilingly ig. nore her remarks? Or why didn't you say, "Oh, Larry's told me all about the fun you had. He still laughs about it, you know." And you could have added, "And, sweetie, look at the lovely ring he gave me." How silly she would have looked then! Deal Molly: I've been married now for about two years.

My father, who divorced my mother when I 'vas a child, comes 10 see my husband and me about twice a year. He stays just for dinner, and that's that, off he goes again. We have a baby son, and my father practically ignores him, and he shows no interest in our home or the nice things we've gotten for the house. Oh, I admit, he was never a close father, but wouldn't you think he'd make a little bit over his grandson? Or even pretend to be interested in how we're getting on and all? I thought all grandparents doted on their grandchildren. Puzzled At Dad That's a fable about all grandparents doting on their grandchildren.

Some just although I'll agree with you that most do. And, yes, I'd think he'd be interested in how you're getting on, as long as he cares enough to visit you. However, remember two things. First, lots of men are at a complete loss around a baby. Maybe your dad is one and will show more interest as the child begins to grow up a little.

And, second, maybe the more interest you show in your dad the more interest he'll show in you. Better mull this over, Puzzled. M. M. Charleroi Girl Is Engaged The engagement of Linda Louise Cantoni and Thomas W.

Make SURE by PHONE Into Space Females By DONALD COX NEW YORK, July 21-If some psychiatrists have their way, the normal American male won't stand a chance in becoming the leading candidate for space pilot on future long trips to the planets and stars. Several exhaustive scientific studies indicate the best prospects for the job so far include schizophrenics, extreme introverts, Eskimos, Aborigines and even women.

The first American women to successfully undergo the same space flight tests undertaken seven Mercury astronauts was a 29-year-old vivacious blonde, Geraldyn Cobb, from Ponca City, Okla. Geraldyn (or Jerrie, as she prefers to be called) has broken the world's altitude and speed records for women in twin engine planes, and has no fear of being rocketed to the limitless outer regions of space. After Miss Cobb had passed all her tests in the summer of 1960, 11 other "astranettes" were selected to follow in her footsteps. The space flights tests for women were given at the famous Lovelace Foundations Clinic, at Albuquerque, N. M.

Brig. Gen. Don Flickinger of the U. S. Air Force's School of Aviation Medicine, along with some other prominent space medics, had listed some basic requirements for the first female astonaut in early 1960.

He and his colleagues felt that such a person should preferably be flat-chested because of the peculiar problems of spacesuit design. They agreed that further pre requisites should include: being under 35, married and a licensed pilot. Her personality should be such that she will be able to boost the morale of other members of a space team living in the close quarters of an orbiting capsule. Just how close does Jerrie Cobb come to these "ideal" space lady qualifications? The vital statistics on this first American "astranette" are as follows: 5 feet, 7 inches tall; weight: 121 pounds; figure measuring 36-26-34. In' private life Miss Cobb is a advertising and promotion manager (of the Aero Design and Engineering Co.) She is willing to give all this up to go off on a space adventure in the near future.

She is studying all aspects of space travel and rocketry. Because they have lower and consume less food, most In space longer than men, equipment. body mass, need less oxygen, women will be able to stay up with the same supplies and Though Miss Cobb is well equipped for spaceflight, some experts feel that females from remote cultures might make even better specimens that American women. For instance, one science writer has surmised that a female midget (Inca or Acara Indian) from the Andes Mountains of Peru would probably make an ideal astronaut once trained. These women are small, adapted to rarified air, and they normally consume food.

already, A high British scientist, Professor Alan Kekwick, head of a team of space medical researchers at Middlesex College, believes the best space traveler probably would be a short, fat woman. It seems the small, chubby girls are best adapted to convert food into energy, although they may eat comparatively little. As a result, the "pantry" in a space ship piloted by this type of woman would not have to be as well stocked as it would be if there were a man Thus we might picture our typical space woman as being "Short, fat and fearless" -not quite the glamorous type portrayed in science fiction. That the Russians are well aware of the particular adventures of woman in space flight is borne out by a mid-1959 report of their plans to shoot a team of two men and two women on an orbital trip around the moon. An American scientist, Dr.

T. C. Helvey (of Radiation Incorporated), at the Commonwealth Space Symposium in London, in 1958, proposed that two men and a woman not a shapely be sent as an ideal team to the moon. One man alone he said, sleeping or if injured in fight, adversely affected by the Two men would not be much team would be out of action an alternate sleep and duty would be incapacitated while and he would undoubtedly be psychological effects of isolation. better off, because half the most of the time, working on cycle.

Some psychiatrists say three men might develop a hostility that could jeopardize the mission. But if the third crew member were a woman, any hostility would be cooled and tensions eased, out of respect to her. What Dr. Helvey and his associates neglect to explain, however, are the rather obvious emotional implications of that could crop up when the "eternal triangle" is introduced--even in this scientific situation. Also, one of the still unsolved and provocative problems concerning married couples on extended space trips is that of marital relations in a weightless state.

As yet, no medical doctor or biologist has come up with a solution. Two "human factors" psychologists at Convair also see great advantages in mixing the sexes on long space flights. Drs. Donald W. Conover and Edward H.

Kemp have noted that during World War II the British had great success in assigning husband wife teams to isolated anti teries and observation duty stations in England. In most cases, the tasks were performed more efficiently -and the crew did not request replacement or transfer. BUYING A TIE should be much easier these days. Hobbies And Interests Keynote New Cravats By HELEN HENNESSY When a woman selects a man's tie, he must hide in a corner when he wears it-so goes a tired cliche. But one new group of designer ties will prove the old saying to be false.

If you know a man well enough to be familiar with his interests and hobbies, these ties are a sure bet to win his approval. It has been said that a man sometimes wears his heart on his sleeve. Well, today he can produce a more visible clue to what he's really like by wearing his hobby on his tie. Doctor, lawyer, golfer, angler, photographer. even gambler, they've all been in- For example, no motorist could resist either of the two ties designed especially for him.

One deals with sports cars in which a miniature Jaguar, a Porsche, and a Mercedes Benz race over the frontis. piece the other features antique cars a Model-T Ford, a Stutz Bearcat and a Stanley Steamer. Not even the stock market is neglected. The ticker tape is very much in evidence, as is the bull and bear, with the The Pittsburgh Press Women' Pages inevitable graph completing the design. These ties will chant any-one dabbling in the market, whether he is a trader, speculator or modest investor.

For the outdoor chef, there is "cook -out" tie, complete with smoking frying pan and barbecue cessories. Color plays an important role in these designs. There is a wide range of blues, tans, greens, black and white and an interesting silver tone, as well as Mara maroon, an original red. The fabrics, too, are exclusively woven in patterns that are tone or in simple weaves. In many instances, the design is woven into the fabric.

Pure silks, foulards, twills and herringbones are included. A good tie is a wise invest. ment, for it not only looks smart. when new but retains its beauty through many dry cleanings. There's no need to ENJOY LIFE with MILLER HIGH LIFE in handy 6-paks DUNCE CANS, 616 OZ.

Colors Highlight Designs By CHINA ALTMAN FLORENCE, Italy, July 21 (UPI) -Fashion experts said today the first phase of Europe's high fashion parade this year was highlighted by theu se of beautiful and unusual colors by Italian de. signers. After seeing fall and winter collections of more than 30 Italian designers, the experts agreed that colors were undoubtedly the triumph of shows in this city and in Rome. The big unanswered question was the shape. Simonetta and her hus.

band and rival designer, Fabiani, produced the only startlingly new line--a sur. pressed bustline and lines as much as five inches below the knee. Some observers said these two designers were merely follow. ing a whim. But there was speculation that Simonetta and Fabiani may have given a sneak preview of the new Paris If this is true, then it would be an outstanding accomplishment for Italian high fashion.
