Evens Loop Mark at 1-1 Jeff Pins 4th Loss on Tigers JEFFERSON The Jefferson Rams needed only the first innmg to collect their initial baseball victory of the season and gain a second place spot in the Eastern Division of the Midwest Conference, as they tagged a 4-2 defeat on the Cat- roll Tigers here Monday evening. The win. which represented the Rams' conference opener, put. them at 1-0 in the conference, second only to the Perry Bluejays who gained sole possession of the top spot with an 8-3 walloping of the Kuemper Knights. Perry is 2-0 in conference play.

The Tigers dropped to third place in the East Division with a 1-1 record, and 2-4 overall. Although Carroll forged into an early lead in their first trip at bat. they could not overcome the devastation of Jefferson's three-run production in the bottom of the first frame. The Tigers started the game with shortstop Ron Anderson landing on first on a throwing error by Ram shortstop Chris Blackburn. Anderson then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, while center fielder Tom Nam struck out and pitcher Randy Plotz grounded out to the Ram pitcher.

First baseman Pete Marz stepped to the plate with two and cracked a sharp line- drive single to left field, sending Anderson scampering for the first Tiger run. Bob Brown, who was playing left field for the Tigers, grounded out to Blackburn, leaving Marz stranded at first. The Rams didn't waste any time as the second man up, nected on a long single to left third baseman John Raver, con- field. As the next batter Mike Wolterman was in the process of getting a two and two count and eventually popping out to Plotz, Raver had stolen second. With two down and a man on second, first baseman Greg Hand singled a shot through the hole, scoring Raver.

Pitcher Jeff Wand was "Mr. Destruction" with a long ball between center and right fields for a clean triple that scored Hand from first. If that weren't enough, a bad throw to third baseman Ted Nam allowed Wand to keep churning and cross the plate for the Rams' third run of the inning. The Tigers gathered their final run in the third when An- Times Herald, Carroll, la, Tuesday, June 13, 1972 derson singled and stole second. Marz then popped a shot to right field which was dropped by Jeff Schrader allowing the fleet-footed Anderson to score from second.

The game settled into a pitching duel until the bottom of the sixth when Jefferson scored its final run. Steve Arbuckle landed on first on a fielder's choice, and moved to second on a wild pitch, Leo i Brooker connected for his first hit of the game, a double, which allowed Arbuckle to come home from second. Blackburn grounded out to Plotz to retire the side with Brooker still on second. I The Tigers will travel to dubon Wednesday night, and will meet league-leading Perry Friday night at the Carroll Stadium. Perry Dumps Kuemper, 8-3 Perry took over sole position of first place in the Eastern Division of the Midwest Conference, defeating Kuemper, 8-3, Monday night at Carroll Stadium. The Bluejays' victory coupled with Carroll's loss at Jefferson, gave them a 2-0 league record as compared to the Rams' 1-0 and the Tigers' 11. Southpaw Rick Heenan led the winners, collecting three hits while tossing a six-hitter and striking out 12. The Knights jumped off to a 1-0 lead after the opening ning as Tom Gradoville reached base after the Perry catcher couldn't handle a third strike. He stole second and came home on Phil Baldus' single.

Perry got two runs in the second, one coming home on a freak play. Dave Hayes walked, stole second and came home on what looked like a routine single by Mike Moyer. However, Moyer came all the way around on his single as the Knights committed two throwing errors. For the game, Kuemper had five miscues. Kuemper tied it at 2-all in the bottom of the second as Randy Schmitz scored on Baldus' second hit of the game and a throwing error.

But Perry took the lead for good in the third, scoring two runs with the help of two more costly Kuemper mistakes. After Tom Keenan reached base via a drop fly ball, Heenan singled to center, scoring Keenan. Heenan went to second as his single went through the center fielder's legs. He came home on Joe Connor's single. Perry wrapped things up, getting four runs in the fifth.

Three straight singles by Heenan, Connors and Dave Hayes scored two and two more runs crossed the plate on Mike Moyer's misjudged fly ball triple and Curt Hensen's fielder's choice. That made it 8-2 and Kuemper starting pitcher Dan Nurse was out of the game, giving way to Jerry Starman. Starman pitched well in relief of Nurse, allowing two hits and no runs over two- and two -thirds innings. The Knights got their third and final run of the game in the fifth as Starman singled, was safe at second on an error and scored on a fielder 's choice.
