The only Arizona public water limited to flies only is Canyon Creek, and that starts Sept. 15, actually. There are three bodies of water which the Arizona Game and Fish Commission has may be fished only with artificial lures (including flies, but not necessarily flies alone). These are: A mile stretch of Oak Creek from the Manzanita camp ground to the Sensenad picnic ground; a mile-plus segment of the Little Colorado River from the Greer Highway to the confluence of the river's east and west forks, and (third), Frye Mesa reservoir, which is Safford's public water supply and understandably is not a good place for dabbling cheese, dough and the like. Canyon Creek was put on a flies-only basis starting Sept.

15 by the commission at its recent meeting because, quite plainly, the only way the commission could get the ow Ranch, which owns the land along both sides of the creek, to allow public access to limit fishing to flies. LYMAN LAKE, 6,000 feet high near St. Johns and Springerville, is a state park now, is rated at 1,500 acres surface capacity. But it'll be a little while before that stage is reached. I'm pretty sure, although it has been filling very fast the past few months.

The lake has been zoned for power-boating, waterskiing, sailboating, swimming, skindiving and, of course, fishing. It will be open to motorboats, which is a rare facility in the White Mountains. The lake is reachable over U.S. Route 666 from St. Johns or Springerville.

An improved, temporary Apache County road is being used to take visitors from 666 to the lake, but a new park access road will be completed by November. There's a boat ramp in the making--but it won't be surfaced until next year, although it has been graded (330 feet long, 30 feet wide). Trailer and tent camper sites have been set aside, water is nearby, there's a comfort station; boat dock (boats soon to be available for rent) and a concession on food and beverages is about to be provided on a lease from the State Parks Board. Fishing now is so-so, although 100,000 fingerling trout were put in after Lyman was renovated to kill off rough fish. The expectation is for good fishing by November.

That means maybe after cold weather brings snow and makes reaching it chancy, but there is always next year, and there usually is good hunting in Lyman's vicinity to combine with a little cold-weather angling. Lyman Park will be open yeararound. A SERIES of fairly mild winters have left Alaskan game ranges well supplied with almost all species of big game, according to that state's Game Division headquarters. The Alaskans are seeking heavier hunting pressure to reduce herds to range capacities. Dail are in great abundance in the Brooks and Alaska Mountains, and to a lesser extent in the Wrangell and Chugach ranges.

Mountain goats are in substantial numbers in Southeastern and SouthCentral Alaska. Moose are abundant over their normal range, caribou are accessible by ground travel centrally and by air in the Arctic region. Elk are plentiful on Kodiak, Afognak and Raspberry Islands, big brown bears plentiful on Kodiak, the Alaska Peninsula and in Southeastern Alaska. There are plenty of grizzlies well-scattered out, and blackies are common. Polar bears will be plentiful the Arctic regions.

And here's the topper (and a good point for you guys who are always yowling we're slaughtering off the deer-herd by limited doe-hunting): Deer are so abundant that the southeastern section of Alaska, there will be a four-month, four-deer, either-sex season. I know guys in this state who will have apoplexy at just the thought of such a deer season anywhere. Maybe a little of that might go a long way, come to think of it. LATEST WORD from the Ft. Apache Indian Reservation is on wholesale rainbow trout plants there.

Main streams involved are the North Fork of White River, Big Diamond Creek, Little Diamond Creek, Paradise Creek, Gooseberry Tank, Blue Lake, Little Bog Creek Tank and the East Fork of White River. Little Bog Creek Tank led, getting 3,000 7-inch rainbows, but substantial numbers of 8-inchers were put into the North and East Forks of White River and Big Diamond.
