Wednesday, October 1, 198025 Reno Evening Gazette Auschwitz film provokes big public response By C.W. MIRANKER Associated Press Writer Homer Lane, KOOL-TV executive vice president, said he was not sure the incident was connected to the showing of the movie. Sharon Briskman, a staff member of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Phoenix and a sponsor of the youth protest, said she was appalled by the bombing. In Baltimore, where CBS affiliate WMAR-TV reported heavy response both for and against the show, Rabbi Mark Loeb said on the station's nightly news he was sorry Miss Redgrave was cast. But he said the show was good and he chose to watch it because of its content.

At WLNE in Providence, R.I., only one out of every 30 calls praised Miss Redgrave. Program director Charlotte Halls appeared on the late news to say that despite the protest the station felt it was important to show what the Holocaust was like. in favor of the show broadcast Tuesday night and 56 against it. Meanwhile, 2,000 Jews gathered for an "Israeli Cabaret" at the Stephen S. Wise Temple in Los Angeles.

"This is our attempt to lure people away from their TV sets tonight," said temple spokesman Robert Feldman. CBS disregarded Miss Fenelon's feelings by broadcasting the program, Feldman charged, dubbing the network the "Callous Broadcasting System." Miss Fenelon, a Parisian cabaret singer who played in the death camp's orchestra, felt that Miss Redgrave should not have played her. But another Auschwitz survivor, Edith Fiedler of Lehigh Acres, said she was not offended that Miss Redgrave won the part. "People should not forget," said the 75-year-old Berlin native. "I went into a school one time and the children ask me 'What's she said, pointing to the numbers tatooed on her left forearm.

"This is Auschwitz. I will tell you about it." In Phoenix, 33 members of the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization Tuesday staged a brief demonstration outside KOOL-TV. A firebomb was thrown against the station's front entrance early Monday. The device, a whiskey bottle filled with gasoline, scorched the bricks and paint of the doorway, causing an estimated $200 damage, authorities said. CBS affiliates across the nation were besieged overnight with telephone calls about the telecast of "Playing For Time," with many callers angry that pro-Palestinian actress Vanessa Redgrave was cho-, sen to play a survivor of a Nazi death camp.

Demonstrators picketed stations in Philadelphia, Denver, Detroit and Phoenix, Ariz. But other viewers praised the made-for-TV movie, based on the life of former Auschwitz prisoner Fania Fenelon, as "one of the best things on television." And overnight ratings from the A.C. Nielsen Co. showed the program was the leading choice among viewers in three large cities. "Playing for Time" attracted an average 41 percent of the audience in New York City to 24 percent for NBC and 19 for ABC, 35 percent in Los Angeles to 17 for both NBC and ABC, and 36 percent in Chicago to 29 for NBC and 26 for ABC.

Some 200 people demonstrated in Philadelphia outside CBS-owned WCAU, which received about 1,500 calls of protest. Five protesters outside KMGH-TV in Denver waved signs that said, "Why Vanessa Redgrave?" and "Was she acting when she was with the Palestinians?" The Denver affiliate said it received 68 calls NBC again tops week's rating race NEW YORK (AP) For the first time in nearly two years, NBC has put together back-to-back first-place finishes in the networks' prime-time ratings competition, according to figures from the A.C. Nielsen Co. NBC was a runaway winner in the three-way race for the week ending Oct. 21, due in large part to "Shogun," the second most-watched miniseries ever broadcast.

And with a boost from "Little House on the Prairie" and three repeat episodes of the "Centennial" miniseries, NBC made it two in a row in the week ending Oct. 28. NBC's average rating in the weekly Nielsen survey dropped almost 10 points, from an all-time high for the network of 26.3 during "Shogun" week to 17.5 for the most recent check. ABC was second at 17.4, with CBS third at 16. The networks say that means in an average prime-time minute during the week ending Oct.

28, 17.5 percent of the nation's homes with television were tuned to NBC. NBC listed four of the week's 10 highest-rated programs to three each for ABC and CBS. CBS' "60 Minutes," the top-rated show in the 1979-80 season, was No. 1 for the week with a rating of 25.1. Nielsen says that means of all the homes in the country with TV, 25.1 percent saw at least part of the program.

In contrast, the first edition of "NBC Magazine with David Brinkley," successor to the network's "Prime Time Saturday," was the week's lowest-rated program. No. 53. NBC began its rebroadcast of "Centennial" just after "Shogun," and Parts III, IV and were screened in the week of Oct. 22-28.

The third installment was ninth in the ratings, with Part IV in 11th place and the fifth chapter 32nd. Here are the week's 10 highest-rated shows: "60 Minutes," with a rating of 25.1 representing 19.5 million homes, CBS; Movie "Marilyn: The Untold Story," 23.4 or 18.2 million, ABC; "Dukes of Hazzard," 22.4 or 17.4 million, CBS; "Dallas," CBS, and "Little House oh the Prairie," NBC, both 21.9 or 17 million; Movie "Act of Love," 21.7 or 16.9 million, NBC; "Love Boat," 21 or 16.3 million, ABC; "Real People," 20.8 or 16.2 million, and "Centennial," Part III, 20.5 or 15.9 million, both NBC, and "Three's Company," 20.3 or 15.8 million, ABC.
