Reno Evening Gazette Thursday, October 16, 198021 Control board recommends Silver Bird leader Gaming Control Board issues Baldwin warning By JACK McFARREN CARSON CITY Frederick Cross-ley was recommended for approval as the president and general manager of the Silver Bird, Silver Nugget and Silver City casinos in Las Vegas by the state Gaming Control Board Wednesday. The casinos are part of the estate of -the late Las-Vegas gaming figure Major Riddle. Jn recommending approval of Cross-Jeyr board members warned him to watch the company he keeps. Board member Jack Stratton saidv; "A number of individuals, interesting not only to gaming control agents, but to just about every other law enforcement agency," visited the Silver Bird shortly after Crossley went to work at the casino last year. Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, Joe Boston and Marty Kane and others were spotted at the Silver Bird, Strat7 ton.

"Why were they there?" he asked, Crossley. Crossley said he wouldn't recognize'; only had two speeding tickets and no record I have no way of knowing who these people are." This prompted one veteran gaming lawyer in the audience to quip, "The motto of this is, 'Be careful who you don't know. The board also recommended approval of Fallon dentist Charles P. McCuskey as president and 100 percent owner of the Sagebrush casino. The board also recommended approval of two 21 games at the Sagebrush, conditional that the games only be open when a key employee is present.

The board expressed concern about financial problems at the casino and warned McCuskey not to rely too much on the table games to solve those problems. Mauldin also asked McCuskey if he could explain why the slot machines at the Sagebrush weren't doing as well as the slots of other casinos in the area. "You don't think you are being ripped off?" he asked the dentist. any of the persons mentioned. But he said, "When Major (Riddle) died, we terminated the high stakes poker game run by Doyle (Texas Dolly) Branson and Eric Drache, and I don't think the people you mentioned will be coming around again." Board member Glen Mauldin also warned Crossley to stay away from certain other figures who he said "our reports indicate possibly may be connected with organized crime." Stratton told Crossley, "You should realized that if you are approved, the eyes of the world particularly gaming control will be on you.

You should be very cautious of who you associate with." "I echo. what Mr. Stratton said," Mauldin said. "There are a lot of people who want to take on the new kid on the block. Be sure you work very hard to hire the right people to assist At one point in the proceedings, Crossley said, "In my entire life, I've Warehouse Market operator Don Baldwin will jkc disciplinary action if he continues to fail to cooperate with gaming authorities, Gaming Control Boattl member Jack Stratton said Wednesday.

The Control Board recommended approval for an unlimited slot machine operation at a Warehouse Market now under construction at Viewcrest and McCarran Drive in Reno. But Stratton said he is "a little put out," becattste board agents allegedly had "a difficult time" getting information from Baldwin. He said Baldwin controls a lot of slot machines his stores, and the information the agents wanted wasn't unreasonable. Baldwin was not at the meeting, but Stratton skid he had reached him the day before by telephone and made it "loud and clear" that the board would action if he failed to cooperate again. 2 Disciplinary action can include anything fromia fine to suspension or revocation of a gamingJlL1 cense.

Baldwin was unavailable for comment today. i io Nigro strikes Laughlin casino roadblock CARSON CITY Veteran Southern Nevada gaming figure Ed Nigro's bid to operate the Colorado hotel-casino at hit a roadblock Wednesday at a state Gaming Control Board meet, ing. Board members were told that Lon-Tiie Dunn, a Newport Beach, financier who was backing Nigro, wants out of the deal. That means Dunn's $74,000 investment will have to be returned quickly, board members said. Lawyer Mike Sloan, representing Nigro, asked for and received another month in which to complete details of the Colorado hotel-casino deal.

But board member Jack Stratton said he's "a little hot at Mr. Nigro." Stratton said Nigro has been involved not only at the Colorado but also with a management group at Las Vegas clubs owned by the late Major Riddle. "He's dancing around a little too fast for me He's all over," said Stratton, adding that Nigro had "better light somewhere quick." '-Kill I save on hard working- house cleaners at our hoover sale!
