A 4 1 of of of of of 1 Westinghouse Market Computers Pact With Univac Produces System Of Plant Control A new line of industrial control computer systems was announced today by the Westinghouse Electric Corp. here. They are the first products of a joint program in which Westinghouse and the Univac Division of Sperry Rand Corp. are co-operating. Generally, will the computters and Westinghouse will supply the system and mar.

keting. Two of the systems have been sold to the Gulf States Paper Alabama, and the Arizona Public Service Phoenix. In the Alabama tion, for example, the computer system will control a continuous digester system and marks the first control computer for closed-loop a spplication in the Industry, according to Westinghouse. Computers in the paper industry, until now, were used for data processing. Studies show that the new control system will: -Substantially increase uniformity of production from a quality control standpoint.

-Save chemicals by more accurately determining amounts to be used in both the digesting and bleaching processes. -Control "cooking" conditions more accurately and, thus, produce more pulp per ton of wood. -Reduce storage costs by reducing the amount of offgrade pulp produced. -Cut down maintenance costs, because the computer will indicate when equipment in the process is beginning to malfunction. Gulf States eventually hopes to use computer control for its bleach plant, power plant, recovery system and other facilities.

The initial system can be expanded to do this, according to Westinghouse. Arizona Public Service will use the computer sys. tem for decisions as to which generating units should be operating and what power interchanges should be made with neighboring utilities. In addition it will control power deliveries and sales, coordinate performance results of power plants and monitor and control performance of the high voltage transmission system. Technically, the systems are PRODAC 510 and 580, the first two of a series.

Both are high-speed, solid state, digital computer tems for use in broad industrial applications, including complex closed-loop, process control. A closed-loop, on line computer, Westinghouse explains, continuously measures at the time of occurrence all variables of a process, including both equipment and product, and makes decisions and takes action to control both the process and the product, in most cases without human aid. The basic difference between the 580 and 510 is that the 580 provides much greater capability for controlling more complex sys. tems. Both are designed for wide Industrial applications including steel and chemical processes.

Stock Brokers Cash In On Spree Fees May Total $30 Million For Three Days By ROBERT DIETSCH Scripps-Howard Staff Writer WASHINGTON, June 1 Stock brokers may have earned almost 30 million dollars in commissions for three days of hectic work this week. The figure is an estimate, at after with brokers, stock exchange officials and executives of organizations connected with the securities business. Commissions collected in the past, levels of fees charged, median prices of actively traded New York Stock Exchange issues and trading volume on several other exchanges were used in arriving at the estimate. One thing seems certain: With stock trading on Monday, Tuesday and terday running at record levels, commissions earned by brokers will surpass those of almost any other week in history. A total of 34,800,000 shares were traded on the New York Exchange during the three days.

It does about 85 per cent of business transacted on all exchanges. To this volume must be added over-the-counter activ. ity-that is, buying and selling of stocks not listed on any exchange. This business alone may total up to 24 billion dollars a year. Yesterday was another big day on Wall Street.

Some 10,700,000 shares were bought and sold on the New York Exchange, against 9,300,000 on Monday and 14,700,000 on Tuesday. (The markets were closed Memorial Day.) Prices rose and stood at levels where they started the week. The Dow -Jones Industrial Average went up nine points yesterday; it had gone 27 points Tuesday, so the two gain about matched the 35-point drop of Monday. The Dow average began the week 612 and closed yes. terday at 613.

Its all-time high is 734, set last December. The 1962 high is 726, set in midMarch. Of the 10 most actively traded on the New York Exchange, only General Motors failed to gain. It closed where it started, at $51. Generally speaking, stock exchanges fix commissions which brokers charge in buy.

ing and selling securities listed on those exchanges. These fees vary according to the price of a security and the number of shares involved. Up to this week, business In most brokerage houses has been sluggish -between 20 and 30 per cent last year. Profits have been down for the firms and missions lower for the men. In fact many firms had laid off workers hired to handle the big trading loads last year, especially last spring.
