The Pittsburgh Press, Friday, December 8, 1967 46 Against Eastern Washington New club Reaches For Golf Pro, 'Super' Waynesburg Visits CMU Defensive Standout Returns, Boosts Fairmont's Title Hopes Rolling Hills Hires Smith, 6-4, And Morup, 6-7 Native Of Canada By RAY KIENZL Rolling Hills Country Club welcomed its new pro and new course superintendent to Pittsburgh today and no doubt some people thought they were basketball players. The pro is Tom Smith and the superintendent is Christian Morup. Smith is 28 and and John Kara, both sophomores. Michael is 38-82 for 437 yards and three touchdowns. Kara has completed 25 of 56 passes for 407 yards and three tallies.

Both have sought out Mertens who has 24 catches for 440 yards and three tallies. Two of the 12 previous NAIA title games have ended in a deadlock. That happened in the 1956 scoreless duel between St. Joseph's, and Montana State, and the 7-7 standoff in 1964 between Concordia, and Sam Houston State. Mates agronomy department, said Morup had "one of the finest records of any student.

Lebanon Golf Club plant until the end of March, Smith and Morup will start their jobs the first of the year. Smith has been assistant pro at the Host Farms club in Lancaster. Before that, he was the teaching pro at Cherry Hills in New Jersey after serving for a time at Woodcrest in New Jersey.

Smith was born in Akron, 0., but was raised in Baltimore and graduated from the i sity of Baltimore. While in college he planned to become a lawyer or FBI man, but he played golf so well that a career as a pro was almost inevitable. He plans to marry next spring. His fiance is a student at Glassboro College. Morup, who also is a low handicap golfer, comes from a course superintendent's family.

His father is the superintendent at the Calgary Golf and Country Club in Alberta, Canada, and Christian started working with his father when he was 12. For the last two years Morup was superintendent at the Hilands Golf Club in Billings, Mont. Morup took three years of engineering at the University of Alberta and graduated from the turf management school at Penn State. Dr. J.

M. Duich, head of Penn Mickey Weintraub, president of the new club, said Arnold Horelick, chairman of the greens committee, and Howard Rothchild, chairman of the golf committee, spent more than three months interviewing applicants for the jobs. Rolling Hills originally was scheduled to take over the Mt. Lebanon operation at the end of the year. But because of a delay in construction of the clubhouse at the new Mt.

Lebanon site, Rolling Hills granted Mt. Lebanon an extension and both groups will use the present facilities for the first three months of 1968. The Savages' closest call was a 17-14 squeaker against Humboldt, Calif. Fairmont State, the NAIA's stingiest defensive team, has allowed just 119.8 yards per game, 60.5 passing and 59.3 rushing. The Falcons reeled off five consecutive shutouts at one stretch including a 7-0 upset over Waynesburg, snapping the Yellow Jackets' 18-game win streak. Eastern Washington has relied heavily on junior Quarterback Dick Dictrick who passed for 2202 yards and 27 touchdowns. Mark Lang, with 33 points and 32 rebounds, has led Carnegie-Mellon so far, while Barry Hummel has scored 29 points and John Meister 20. Jeff Collier, 6-2 freshman from Uniontown, and 5-10 Tom Cunningham have been leading the Waynesburg attack.
