Page 20 Freeport (III.) Journal-Standard, Friday, July 9, 1975 Retired Gen. Edwin Walker Charged With Public Lewdness DALLAS (UPI) Retired Army Maj. Gen. Edwin A. Walker, a one-time leader and favorite of ultraconservative causes, has been charged with public lewdness for allegedly fondling a plainclnlhes officer in a city park restroom.

Police Thursday confirmed Walker was arrested last month on the charge. A district attorney's office spokesman said Walker, fifi, probably would go on trial in late August on the misdemeanor charge which carries a maximum penalty of a $2,000 fine and a year in jail. When asked by newsmen about, the arrest, Walker replied, "To be a live, nonperson, court-ruled public figure to be libeled as well is at least some change of image. "I am free, independent, unattached to suit myself and no one else," he added. Powder Puff Derby Falls On Hard Times SACKAMENTO, Calif.

(UPI) The Powder Puff Derby is going the way of speakeasies, the Charleston, spats and flappers. Nearly 200 light planes warmed their engines for takeoff today in the last version of the females-only transcontinental race made famous by pioneer aviatrix Amelia Earhart in 1929. But the four-day race from Sacramento to Wilmington, has fallen on hard times, the victim of soaring costs and too much air traffic. "I'm sad for the new pilots who would like to enter," said Fran Bera, Long Beach, a seven-time winner of the race. "Finances, fuel and traffic.

You can sum it up in those words," said Miriam Burcher, an organizer of the race that picked up its title from a quip by Will Rogers. Mrs. Burcher said the cost to each racing team is about $3,000 although some are sponsored by commercial firms. The winner, often decided by a matter of a few seconds, will receive $10,000 of the total $25,000 in prize money. Wanda Cummings, secretary of the board of directors of the race, noted Uganda Raid Discussed TEL AVIV, Israel (UPI) Israel's chief of staff says three guerrillas apparently escaped the Israeli commando raid in Uganda, but the strike went off with such precision it took less time than a dress rehearsal the night before.

Lt. Gen. Mordechai Gur told reporters at a special briefing Thursday Israel did not consult Kenya in advance before refueling at the Nairobi airport on the way back to Tel Aviv. "We forced ourselves on the Kenya-Us," he said. "When you come with such an element as we came, it is not so difficult to refuel, even in Kenya." Gur said three terrorists may have slipped past the Israeli force that assaulted the old terminal building at Entebbe airport Saturday and freed more than 100 hostages from pro- Palestinian hijackers.

"We had information about something around 10 terrorists and we did count seven," Gur said. "We assume that the other three ran out." He said the first Israeli troops were inside the terminal within 45 seconds of landing in Uganda. They killed four guerrillas instantly and three more within a few minutes. Shouting, "Run for the plane!" in Hebrew, they hustled the hostages many only half-dressed out of the terminal and into waiting aircraft. The raid lasted 90 minutes, Gur said, and the C13Q carrying the hostages took off 53 minutes after their arrival, two minutes less than the operation took in a dress rehearsal somewhere in Israel Friday night.

Gur declined to reveal how the planes managed to land at Entebbe without incident but said his men moved so quickly the hijackers and Ugandan soldiers undoubtedly "did not understand until the last moment what really happened." He credited exceptional intelligence work for mission's success and said the Israeli soldiers knew where to go next at all times. Many more casualties were expected than were suffered. Gur said two mobile operating rooms and 33 doctors were standing by, 10 at Entebbe and the rest at undisclosed locations along the attack and escape route. Gur said he had no information on the fate of Dora Bloch, a 75-year-old Jerusalem woman left behind in Uganda. One of her three sons, who had been with her on the flight, said she was in a hospital in the Ugandan capital of Kampala when the Israelis arrived, but the Ugandan health service said she was returned to the airport before the raid.

Diplomatic sources in Washington said they understood Mrs. Bloch was dragged screaming from her hospital bed Sunday morning and had not been heard from since. Claims U. S. Not Prepared For Long War SAN DIEGO (UPI) Assistant Navy Secretary Jack Bowers says the U.S.

military is not prepared to wage a conventional war of "sustained duration." He said, however, the military would correct the readiness situation if the nation seemed to be approaching a conventional war situation. that "because of (heavy) air traffic the safety precautions have become more and more complicated." The safety record of the derby has not been marred by a serious accident since 1947 when the race was put on an annual basis. "Frankly, we'd rather end on a high note while we're still top notch than begin to go downhill," Mrs. Cummings said. From Sacramento the fliers set their compasses for Fresno and Riverside then east to Grand Canyon Sante Fe, N.M., Lubbock, Tex.

Oklahoma City, Little Rock, Ark. Nashville, Parkersburg, W.Va. and Wilmington. The smaller planes will stop at each city to refuel, but the larger craft may skip stops. Flying is permitted only between dawn and dusk.

Walker was arrested by a plainclothes city Parks Department officer late in the evening of June 23 in a restroom at Cole Park, according to police spokesman Bob Shaw. As an Army general, Walker commanded elements of the 101st Airborne Division sent to Little Rock, by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1957 to enforce integration at Little Rock Central High School. He entered the national political arena in 1961 when he was pressured into resigning his commission in the Army for alleged political indoctrination of American troops stationed in Germany. Following the resignation, he was in great demand as a speaker at rallies for political groups, especially the John Birch Society. He entered electoral politics briefly in 1962, campaigning unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for governor of Texas against five other men, including John B.

Connally, the eventual winner. Walker was the plaintiff in a landmark Supreme Court libel decision in 1963 arising out of his arrest for inciting a race riot at Oxford, Miss. The court held Walker was a "public figure" and said the Associated Press and several newspapers failed to show malice in the alleged libel. His name made the headlines again after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

The widow of Lee Harvey Oswald told the Warren Commission her husband fired a shot into Walker's house in October, 1963 one month before the assassination. Walker was not injured. Several N.Y.C. Firms Looking To Illinois CHICAGO (UPI) Several New York City manufacturing firms are said to be looking toward Illinois as a possible future home for their operations. Joseph Pisciotte, director of the Illinois Department of Business and Economic Development, said Thursday the companies expressed an interest in Illinois because of its transpbrtaton facilities, the state's large labor pool and its nearness to markets.

Of the 100 firms recently contacted by an Illinois delegation made up of department representatives and local businessmen, 22 expressed some interest in Illinois, according to Pisciotte. Seven others were considering Illinois as a site for new factories and two already had selected Illinois for new plants, he said. THfi Of QUAITY LEASE A MUD (Myers U-Drlve Inc.)
