2p 1 0 Akron Beacon Journal Thursday, October 6, 1983 TELEVISION 'Cheers' won't discard Sam-Diane dog-and-cat fight By Fred Rothenberg had to have something happen. We 5 Til 4 of NBC Entertainment: "We like to make new mistakes, not old ones." Dee controversy From wire reports Former Cleveland disc jockey Gary Dee, no stranger to controversy, started out with a large one in the Washington, D.C., area, where he began working this week on WPKX radio. Dee, whose real name is Gary D. Gilbert, said in his morning drive-time show debut Monday that Effi Barry, the wife of Washington's black mayor, "could pass for white." He also slammed Puerto Ricans he met during his visit to that island. Dee's contract with WHK in Cleveland was terminated after 10 years when Dee's ratings among Cleveland area disc jockeys dropped from No.

1 to No. 5. Dee reportedly will be paid $2 million over six years if the ratings are high enough. Usually sedate WPKX's slogan is "more music, less bull." Associated Press Love and marriage ruined Rhoda several years ago, and the producers of Cheers aren't about to let Sam and Diane's new-found togetherness destroy a delightfully hostile relationship. Last week, Diane and Sam, the often-antagonistic leads in NBC's Emmy-winning comedy, finally consummated their off-again, off-again relationship.

BUT RAXE NO FEAR, love won spoil them. They won't live happily ever after. "Whatever their relationship, they still will not like each other," says Glen Charles, one of the program's executive producers. Cheers will be pre-empted tonight by the second game of the American League baseball playoffs between the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles. In last week's season-opener, Sam (Ted Danson) at long last got Diane (Shelley Long) into the bedroom.

When the story picks up next Thursday (9:30 couldn't tease ourselves and the audience forever," he said. "I think you can be in a relationship and have tons of conflict." NBC has had many discussions with the Cheers staff on the subject. The network is well aware that too much domesticity can remove the excitement from a sizzling relationship. In the 1970s, audiences identified warmly with Valerie Harper's character on Rhoda when she was single and wishing she weren't. When she married her dream man (David Groh), the audience lost interest.

Josh Kane, a former programmer at NBC working for CBS, said an earlier series, Bridget Loves Dernie, had the Irish Catholic woman and the Jewish man "get married at the end of the pilot, and the show was over." Bridget Loves Bernie's co-stars Meredith Baxter and David Birney got married later in real life. NBC and the Cheers producers don't want the same thing to happen to their show. Says Brandon Tartikoff, president nm tif -V Sam (Ted Danson), Diane (Shelley Long) still will scratch and claw p.m., WKYC-Ch. 3, WFMJ-Ch. 21, Steu-benville's WTOV-Ch.

9), their chronic billing and cooing will disgust the bar's regulars. That's a relief. The funniest, most adult comedy on TV could not stand too much sappy syr up. What gives Cheers much of its bite is that Sam and Diane are wildly drawn to each other by the same things that pull them apart: their differences in intellect, attitude and lifestyle. Danson said Sam couldn't live much longer on banter and no touching.
