C8 Akron Beacon Journal Sunday, August 21, 1983 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Orioles ay musical bats in win over KG pi AMERICAN Associated Press While Gary Roenicke awaits a new shipment of his own bats, the Baltimore outfielder is doing quite well with some borrowed models. Roenicke drove in two runs with a homer and a single Saturday, as Mike Boddicker and Tippy Martinez combined on a four-hitter to pitch the Orioles to a 6-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals in Baltimore. After hitting a couple of balls into the bleachers in batting practice, Roenicke wouldn't let Rich Dauer use the same bat. "But I wound up breaking it, anyway," Roenicke said of his grounder in Kansas City failed to score as Martinez retired the next three batters, striking out George Brett for the final out. Following a seven-game losing streak, the Orioles have won seven of eight, a spurt that has enabled them to regain the lead in the Amerian League East.

Roenicke hit his 15th homer in the second inning off Lary Gura (10-15) and added an RBI single in the fourth. Ken Singleton hit his 15th homer of the season in the Orioles' three-run eighth. Dan Ford opened the fourth with a single. He was picked off by Gura but reached second with a stolen base when first baseman Willie Aikens never made a throw to second. After Eddie Murray walked, Roenicke's single scored Ford.

The Orioles added a run in the seventh on a double by Rich Dauer and a single by John Shelby. After Singleton's eighth-inning homer, Todd Cruz singled, stole second and scored on Dauer's double. Rick Dempsey singled home Dauer. The Royals have averaged 1.60 runs in Gura's 15 losses, scoring two runs or less 12 times, and their only run off Boddicker was unearned. In other games: Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 2 Jim Rice hit a grand slam homer in the third inning, and veteran Dennis Eckersley earned his first Fenway Park victory in two months as the Boston Red Sox snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Eckersley (7-9) scattered eight hits in BVi innings, including Ernie Whitt's line-drive homer off the right-field foul pole. Bob Stanley finished up for his 23rd save. Toronto starter Dave Stieb (13-11) allowed eight hits in 7'h innings. The Blue Jays, who had won three straight and seven of eight, fell 2Vi games behind first-place Baltimore in the American League East. Yankee 6, Angels 2 In New York, Shane Rawley scattered eight hits to post consecutive victories for the first time since June 15 and Don Baylor had three hits, including a home run, as the New York Yankees defeated the California Angels.

Both runs off Rawley (12-10) were unearned. He walked two and struck out four In pitching his 10th complete game. Rangers 6, White Sox 1 Newly-acquired Dave Stewart scattered three hits in six innings and George Wright drove in four runs with a homer and double as the host Texas Rangers beat Chicago, ending the White Sox's six-game winning streak. the sixth inning. By that time, he already had his two RBI.

"I think this was Lenn Sakata's model," Roenicke said. "I use them all. I hit three homers with Dauer's model before I broke that one the other night." Dauer, meanwhile, picked up a Benny Ayala model and rapped two doubles to end a one-for-34 slump. Boddicker said he didn't get tired in the 97-degree weather, but felt a slight strain in the back of his shoulder before being lifted with no outs in the eighth and two runners in scoring position. Late Friday Associated Press Gerald Perry might have been an unknown quantity to the Chicago Cubs a couple of days ago, but they're learning rapidly that the Atlanta rookie is a dangerous man with the bat. For the second successive day, Perry lowered the boom on the Cubs. This time with a two-run pinch single that capped a four-run seventh inning Saturday and led the first-place Braves to a 9-2 victory at Wrigley Field. Perry was called off the bench with the bases loaded and two runs across. The Cubs, who admitted Friday they knew nothing about the youngster up from Triple A Richmond, countered with Craig Lefferts, a left-handed pitcher.

Atlanta manager Joe Torre stuck with the left-handed swinging Perry, who promptly singled to left. "He was not intimidated and he wasn't overanxious considering the bases-loaded situation," Torre said. "He's seen a lot of left-handers on the minor-league level." "I got a pretty good pitch to hit," said Perry, who is in danger Reliever Ken Dayley (4-3) was the winner. In other games: Pirates 4, Reds 0 Jose DeLeon, flirting with a no-hitter for the third time in his seven game major-league career, held Cincinnati hitless for 6 innings before settling for a two-hitter as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds at Three Rivers Stadium. DeLeon, who struck out 13, most in the majors this season, didn't allow a hit until Dan Driessen pulled a 3-2 pitch into the right-center field gap for a double with two outs in the seventh.

Eddie Milner opened the ninth with a single for the Reds' other hit. DeLeon, a 22-year-old right-hander, allowed only three other base runners, all on walks. It was his fourth victory in six decisions since he joined the Pirates from their Hawaii farm club in the Pacific Coast League on July 20. Mets 7, Giants 2 George Foster hit a grand slam homer and Ron Hodges doubled twice to highlight a seven-run fifth inning that lifted the New York Mets over the host San Francisco Giants. Right-hander Ed Lynch (9-7) retired the first 1 1 San Francisco batters and finished with an eight-hitter as the Mets won their second straight game over the Giants.

Cardinals 3, Astros 0 John Stuper, winless since June 5, pitched a five-hitter for his first major-league shutout, while David Green homered and Ozzie Smith stole home, leading the host St. Louis Cardinals to a victory over the Houston Astros. Stuper (8-8) walked two and didn't strike out a batter as he pitched the Cardinals to their fourth consecutive triumph. The Astros have lost three in a row, the last two by shutouts. I was looking for a fastball, and in that situation I just wanted to get at least one run in." The Braves scored four more runs in the eighth while reliever Terry Forster earned his 11th save by retiring all nine men he faced.

With the Braves trailing 2-1, Terry Harper opened the seventh with a single and was forced by Dale Murphy. Bob Watson doubled, and Murphy scored the tying run on a single by Rafael Ramirez off loser Steve Trout (9-11). Randy Johnson singled off reliever Warren Brusstar to score Watson with the lead run and, after Bruce Benedict walked, Perry greeted reliever Craig Lefferts with his two-run single. He could not cut it and Neal Heaton was taken out of the rotation and asked to perform that task. He did, but Heaton regained his starting status after Juan Eichelberger lost seven straight games. Easterly got the key bullpen assignment by default.

Andy Thornton drove in the game-winner in the eighth. Toby Harrah began the rally with a single and moved to third on Alan LAParrish reached first on catcher's interference.
