Kicking Around By LARRY BUSTER Penn State's Fusina tops NEA All-America Upchurch top cowboy While our attention Is turned toward the superstars in rodeo at the NFR in Oklahoma City, we may have overlooked the faint glimmer of a rodeo star in our own town. THE STAR I am referring to is the East Texas Rodeo Association finals bull riding champion, Randy Upchurch. Randy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Unchurch of Paris and is married to the former Marsha Armstrong.

Randy not only won the bull riding at the finals, but also finished third for the season in ETRA. To accomplish this feat, Randy rodeoed hard along the Texas Louisiana border making all of the rodeos he could crowd into his schedule. His efforts paid off as is shown by the gold and silver trophy belt buckle he won at the finals. To do this, he had to win the average at the finals held this past week in Nacogdoches, Texas. Randy rode bull 007 of the Wayne Barret rodeo string on Friday night and then rode bull 112 of Nicky Wheeler's on Saturday.

RANDY IS not new to the sport of rodeo. He started riding bulls at the age of 13 and has been at it ever since. Randy started his career in the Paris arena at a high school rodeo, then went on to pursue higher ranks. He rode in the junior and high school rodeos in this area where he not only entered in the bull riding, but the bareback riding as well.Though he was winning in both events, and bringing home all-around titles, he like many of the other top hands, decided to specialize in one event, that being bull riding. RANDY SEEMS to nave chosen wisely, for he joined the Oklahoma Youth Rodeo Association and went to the finals in the bull riding joined the Central Rodeo Association, went to the finals and in the meantime was busy trying to fill his PRCA permit He has now earned over $700 on his permit and is only a short distance from being a fullfledged card carrier in that association.

is only a short distance from being r. fullfledged card carrier in that association. Randy credits his dad with much of his success. "Daddy always told me 'you had to be tough to and I guess he was right, because sometimes it takes a little bit of something extra to get on a bull Out has maybe thrown you before, and has hurt you in some way. He doesn't say anything if I buck off, but is always full of praise for me if I make a good ride on a bull," "MY HERO has always been Freckles Brown.

In my opinion, he is the best bull rider that ever rodeoed the circuit, and I have tried to pattern my style after him." When asked about the future of rodeo, Randy replied, "I don't think rodeo will ever die out as a sport. There are too many young cowboys coming along to replace the older ones as they quit. I think rodeo has a great future and they seem to be getting better all of the time." jf HAVE changed a lot since I started," states Randy. "Where a cowboy could, at one time, come out on a bull that just jumped and kicked, and won the show he now has to ride one that spins just as soon as the chute gate opens if he plans to win any money." Randy believes that a big part of being a successful bull rider is mental conditioning. "I nearly walk myself to death right before getting on a bull.

Although I don do physicafexercises, I feel that you have to be in top shape both mentally and physically." By MURRAY OLDERMAN SAN FRANCISCO (NEA) An Ail-America college football team is not repeat, NOT meant to be'a compendium of prospective No. 1 draft choices for the pros. It's what the man has done for his college team and he doesn't have to be a counts. Of course, the 1978 NEA All-America team, chosen in conjunction with writers, coaches and scouts nationally, has its share of future professional greats. The pros aren't dumb about talent, and talent is what distinguishes an All- America.

But the real criterion is performance. Current performance. Take the quarterback position. There was a plethora of great offensive leadership this season. Probably the best pure talent at quarterback in the country is Jack Thompson of Washington State.

He was hampered by a poor supporting cast. Ed Smith of Michigan State had a fantastic year. So did Steve Fuller of Clemson. Rick Leach of Michigan has been a marvelous leader for four years. And Steve Dils, getting his first shot as nation in passing for Stanford.

But on the No. 1 team in the country, Penn State, the man who made things happen was Chuck Fusina, their heady signal caller. He is a fine passer, an agile field leader, above all a winner. So he leads the way on this All-America team: OFFENSE Wide receiver Kirk Gibson, Michigan State, 6-2, 210 senior, Waterford, Mich. Flanker Gordon Jones, Pittsburgh, 6-1, 185, senior, North Versailles, Pa.

Tight end Kellen Winslow, Missouri, 6-6, 230, senior, East St. Louis, 111. Tackle Keith Dorney, Penn State, 6-5, 257, senior, Allentown, Pa. Tackle Jeff Toews, Washington, 6-3, 255, senior, San Jose, Calif. Guard Greg Roberts, Oklahoma, 6-3, 260, senior, Nacogdoches, Tex.

Guard Pat Howell, Southern California, 6-6, 255, senior, Fresno, Calif. Center Dave Huffman, Notre Dame, senior, Dallas. Quarterback Chuck Fusina, Penn State, l-l, 195, senior, McKees Rock, Pa. Running back Charles Alexander, Louisiana State, 6-1, 214, senior, Galveston, Tex. Running back Billy Sims, Oklahoma, 6-0, 205, junior, Hooks, Tex.

Placekicker Matt Bahr, Penn State, senior, State College, Pa. DEFENSE End Al Harris, Arizona State, 6-5, 240, senior, Wheeler AF Base, Hawaii. End George Andrews, Nebraska, 6-4, 225, senior, Omaha, Neb. Tackle Marty Lyons, Alabama, 6-5, 250, senior, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Tackle Mike Bell, Colorado State, 6-4, 255, senior, Wichita Kan. Linebacker Tom Cousineau, Ohio State, 6-3, 227, senior, Fairview Park, Ohio. Linebacker Jerry Robinson, UCLA, 214, senior, Santa Rosa, Calif. Linebacker George Cumby, Oklahoma, 6-0, 205, junior, Gorman, Tex. Cornerback Lawrence Johnson, Wisconsin, 5-11, 191, junior, Gary, Ind.

Cornerback Jeff Nixon, Richmond, senior, 6-4, 195, Glendale, Va. Safety Johnnie Johnson, Texas, junior, 6-2, 183, LaGrange, Tex. Safety Johnnie Johnson, Texas, junior, 6-2, 183, LaGrange, Tex. Safety Ken Easley, UCLA, sophomore, 202, Chesapeake, Va. Punter Russell Erxleben, Texas, 6-4, 218, senior, Seguin, Tex.

The unanimous choices on this brilliant squad were the offensive guard pair, Roberts and Howell the most impressive blocking howitzers in recent years. Competition was especially stiff at the running back positions, where such ground-burners as USC's Charles White, N.C. State's Ted Brown, Eddie Lee Ivery of Georgia Tech, and Jerome Persell of Western Michigan had record-breaking seasons. And at the defensive tackle posts, where the Penn State junior tandem of Bruce Clark and Matt Millen clamored for recognition. A prime example of the application of college standards to this squad was Andrews, the defensive standout for Nebraska.

Because of his size (225 pounds), the pros project him as a linebacker. But in the Cornhusker system, he's listed as an end. And that's where he stands as an All- America. The second team and it's a worthy one lines up as follows: OFFENSE: WR Emanuel Tolbert, Southern Methodist; FL Jerry Butler, Clemson; TE Mark Branrmer, Michigan State; Clark, Nebraska; Robert Dugas, Louisiana State; Joe Bostic, Clemson; Brad Budde, Southern California; Robert Shaw, Tennessee; Steve Dils, Stanford; RB Charles White, Southern California; RB Ted Brown, North Carolina State; PK Tony Franklin, Texas DEFENSE: Green, Pittsburgh; Smith, Miami Bruce Clark, Penn State; Matt Millen, Penn State; Matt Millen, Penn State; LB Bob Golic, Notre Dame; LB Michael LB Joe Norman, Indiana; CB Russ Calabrese, Missouri; CB Tim Smith, Oregon State; Vaughn Lusby, Arkansas; Pete Harris, Penri'State; Joe Restic, Notre Dame. He feels that winning the world championship at the World Series of rodeo would be the ultimate award in bull riding.
