10.22.2014 Wednesday 1 T. LOUI PO T- I a TCH A17 Nelson Bunker Hunt The Texas oilman who once tried to corner the silver market with his brothers only to see the move end in financial disaster, has died. His brother, W. Herbert Hunt, said he died Tuesday (Oct. 21, 2014) at a Dallas assisted-living center after a long battle with disease.

He was 88. Mr. Hunt was among the wealthiest men. His father was legendary Texas oilman H.L. Hunt.

He built on his oil and gas holdings, finding a rich Libyan oil field only to have it nationalized later by Moammar Gadhafi. He owned millions of acres of farm and ranch land in Australia, race horses and an ancient coin collection. But a huge, soured bet on the silver market by Mr. Hunt and his brothers led to legal problems and bankruptcy. Ben Bradlee The hard- charging editor who guided The Washington Post through its coverage of the Watergate scandal, died Tuesday (Oct.

21, 2014) at his home in Washington of natural causes. He was 93. As managing editor first and later as executive editor, the raspy-voiced Mr. Bradlee engineered the transformation of the Post from a sleepy hometown paper into a great national one. He brought in a cast of talented journalists and set editorial standards that brought the paper new respect.

Mr. Bradlee got an early break as a journalist thanks to his friendship with one president, John F. Kennedy, and became famous for his role in toppling another, Richard Nixon, helping guide Bob Woodward and Carl Pulitzer Prize- winning coverage of the Watergate scandal. Rick Piltz The longtime climate policy analyst who exposed how top- level officials in the administration of President George W. Bush edited scientific reports to minimize the link between human activity and climate change, died Saturday (Oct.

18, 2014) at a hospice center in Washington. He was 71. The cause was complications from bladder cancer, said his wife, Karen Metchis. He was a resident of Bethesda, Md. For a decade, Mr.

Piltz held a senior post with the U.S. Global Change Research Program, through which U.S. government agencies coordinate their support for research on climate. He quit in March 2005, citing frustration with the Bush efforts to change the testimony of federal officials and the reports they submitted documenting the effects of global warming. The edits in some cases subtle, in others as bold as crossing out whole sentences altered descriptions of climate research written by government scientists and their supervisors with the apparent intent of raising doubts where many climate experts think there are none.

Sumi Haru The activist with the Screen Actors Guild died Thursday (Oct. 16, 2014) at All Saints HealthCare in North Hollywood, Calif. She was 75. She had emphysema, said her daughter, Vanda Vieaux. Ms.

Haru dreamed of becoming an actress, but she found her true calling when she joined a 1970 picket line at the Music Center in Los Angeles, protesting the musical Ladies, Kind which was set in Japan but had white actors playing Asian roles. Through her activism, including years as a board member and officeholder with the Screen Actors Guild, Ms. Haru helped pave the way for Asian- American actors to get more representation on film and television. Gough Whitlam The flamboyant Australian prime minister and controversial social reformer whose grip on power was cut short by a bitter constitutional crisis, died Tuesday (Oct. 21, 2014) at the age of 98.

Although national leader for only three turbulent years until 1975, the legacy of Mr. Labor Party government remains to this day. Many of its legislative and social innovations, once regarded as radical, are now accepted as part of daily life. Rene Burri The Swiss photographer who captured iconic black and white images of Communist revolutionary Ernesto Guevara and painter Pablo Picasso, died Monday (Oct. 20, 2014) of cancer in Zurich.

He was 81. Mr. Burri was just 13 when he photographed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill during a visit to Switzerland in 1946. In 1963, he traveled to Cuba and shot his famous picture of a cigar- chomping Che. Mr.

Burri frequently photographed artists, including sculptor Alberto Giacometti and the architect Le Corbusier. An invitation to dine with Picasso in 1957 resulted in a series of intimate portraits of the painter. Alfred Wertheimer The photographer whose images of Elvis Presley documented the start of a legendary career, has died. A statement Tuesday said he died of natural causes at his New York apartment. He was 86.

The date of his death was not released. Mr. Wertheimer was 26 when he was assigned to photograph the 21-year-old unknown singer. He traveled with Elvis for one week in 1956 and produced a series of now-famous black and white photographs that were the subject of exhibits at the Smithsonian Institution and the Grammy Museum. Among the most famous shots is a photo of Elvis nuzzling a woman fan backstage.

Wearing a dark suit, the double-amputee athlete was subdued when Judge Thokozile Masipa announced the punishment in a Pretoria courtroom, ending a televised trial that was closely followed at home and abroad by those who once admired him. The man known as the because of his carbon-fiber running blades will have to serve 10 months, or one-sixth of his sentence, in prison before he is eligible to be moved to house arrest, legal analysts say.

Even if he leaves prison early, his running career is in doubt. Pistorius, 27, who has won six Paralympic gold medals, will be ineligible to compete in those events during the entirety of his ve-year prison sentence, of where it is the International Paralympic Committee said. Pistorius could challenge that decision. The sight of Pistorius racing around the track on his blades was one of the enduring and inspirational images of the London Olympics. Born without fibula bones because of a congenital defect, he had his legs amputated at 11 months old, but grew up playing sports with prosthetics.

In reaching the verdict against Pistorius last month, Masipa accepted his account that he accidentally shot Steenkamp, 29, a model and television personality, through a closed toilet door in his home after mistaking her for an intruder on Day 2013.
