LOUIS No sign of bridge jumpers The Coast Guard said Thursday it had suspended a search without finding two homeless men said to have jumped from the Eads Bridge into the Mississippi River about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. It was not clear whether they made it to safety or drowned.

Authorities were told that four homeless men on the bridge decided to jump into the water and swim to the Illinois side. Only two tried, and they were last seen a couple hundred yards downstream. The other two walked across the bridge and reported the incident at the Casino Queen. ST. LOUIS Death is investigated Homicide detectives were investigating what officials called the suspicious death of Garrett Weddle, 51, who was found unresponsive about 6 p.m.

LOUIS COUNTY Bank robbery suspect held John Lyons, 52, who is accused of using a fake bomb in holding up a bank, was charged Thursday in St. Louis County Circuit Court with first- degree robbery and fleeing arrest. A bomb squad determined that a device left at the U.S. Bank, at 2041 Union Road, about 4:48 p.m. Wednesday was harmless.

Police spotted Lyons walking south along the fence line of Interstate 55, just south of Reavis Barracks Road. He hid in heavy brush but was captured with the help of a police dog, which bit him on the neck. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. Lyons, of the 10000 block of Marble Arch Lane in St. Louis County, was held in lieu of $100,000 cash-only bail.

FARMINGTON Building inspector is accused of stealing Jaime Nicole Ellis, 35, a building inspector in Farmington, was charged Tuesday with felony stealing for allegedly keeping thousands of dollars in permit application fees intended for the city. She was arrested Wednesday and released after posting $15,000 bail. The city financial director discovered during an audit that about $5,700 was missing. Ellis had been promoted to building inspector in February from the job of permit clerk. BERKELEY Man is sought after robbery Berkeley police were searching for Lance Jones, 30, whom they described as a person of interest in a robbery about 10:38 a.m.

Prison sentence in HIV case David Lee Mangum, 39 of Dexter, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison for exposing sexual partners to HIV, according to the Southeast Missourian.

He pleaded guilty June 2 to two counts of exposing another person to HIV. Mangum, questioned by police after an ex-boyfriend tested positive for HIV, told authorities he knew he was HIV-positive but had exposed as many as 300 men since 2003 without warning them. Hawley faces a likely primary with Republican state Sen. Kurt Schaefer, also of Columbia. Democrats Sen. Scott Sifton of the Affton area and St. Louis County Assessor Jake Zimmerman also are running for attorney general.
