Al was born to Roy and Alda (nee Marshall) Corry in 1920. He was raised with his two sisters, Wanda and Norma, during the deprivations of the Great Depression. After graduation from Central High School, Al met Shirley (nee Koenig) while they worked at the St. Louis Board of Education. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted and went by troop transport across the Pacific, flying over the "Burma Hump" into China where he served for the remainder of the war.

He was discharged with the rank of Master Sargent in the Flying Tigers of the Army Air Corps. Al then returned to St. Louis where he married Shirley and enrolled at St. Louis University. He subsequently graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business.

He was elected for a term as president of the NAMA (National Automatic Merchandising Assoc.) He traveled widely throughout the states and world for both business and pleasure. During these years, he and Shirley had an active social life that included countless friends.
