08.01.2014 Friday 1 ST. LOU i POST- di SP a TCH A7 ST. LOUIS Highway 40 exit to reopen The Missouri Department of Transportation will reopen the Vandeventer Avenue exit from eastbound Highway 40 (Interstate 64) sometime about noon today, officials said. The ramp was closed as part of the project to build a new interchange at Tower Grove Avenue and Highway 40, along with the ramp from Vandeventer to westbound Highway 40. Neither was rebuilt as part of the project but were closed because of the close proximity to the construction, said Deanna Venker, area engineer for the city of St.

Louis. The Vandeventer ramp to westbound Highway 40 will reopen next week. Venker said the remainder of the interchange would probably open sometime in mid-August. The interchange included rebuilding bridges at Taylor, Newstead, Tower Grove and Boyle avenues. The project was done in conjunction with BJC HealthCare and Washington University.

(Ken Leiser) ST. CHARLES Events planned to help cover medical expenses In addition to a website set up to help pay the medical bills of a man who died after he was wounded by a large firework, two fundraising events are planned. Michael Keen, 51, passed away Monday at Barnes- Jewish Hospital. Keen was apparently outside doing yard work the afternoon of July 5 in the 700 block of North Benton Avenue. Authorities said Keen told them he found a mortar shell and when he picked it up, it exploded, blowing off part of his hand.

He also had chest and facial injuries, internal injuries and injuries to both arms from the shrapnel. The website set up for Keen, helpmickeykeen. myevent.com, says he had recently lost his job and the family did not have insurance. A benefit pig roast to raise funds will be held Saturday at Pub at 2198 First Capitol Drive in St. Charles.

Breakfast will start at 8 a.m., a poker run will start at 10 a.m. and food will be served beginning at 2 p.m. A car wash fundraiser will be held Sunday at Hucks Food Store at 699 Salt Lick Road in St. Peters beginning at 10 a.m. (Valerie Schremp Hahn) ST.

LOUIS Local juggler claims third place Thom Wall, 27, a juggler from St. Louis, placed third in the individual division of at the International Association championship finals Thursday night. The competition took place at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. Wall competed against another St. Louis performer, Kellin Quinn, 17, and three Japanese performers.

Quinn did not place in the competition. Jugglers send in preliminary videos of their routines, and judges narrow the pool to five finalists for each of the three divisions: individuals, teams and juniors. Wall said Thursday night. His finale was balancing a three-tiered candelabra on top of a balloon, which was balanced on the sharp edge of a knife held between his teeth. He popped the balloon and caught the chandelier on a balance on the edge of the knife, he said.

(Valerie Schremp Hahn) DIGEST EA SE 636-937-6249 JEFFERSON COUNTY The attorney representing three Fox School District critics in a libel lawsuit is seeking to trace the origins of more nasty comments made on a Topix website. Dan Herman filed on Thursday motions asking a judge to order three Internet providers to turn over the names, addresses and phone numbers connected with eight IP addresses, which are specific codes assigned to each computer. He won a similar motion in April, which is how he traced comments to the home of Dianne Critchlow, then the superintendent, and her husband. Other comments came from the home of Dan Baker, assistant superintendent of elementary education, and his wife, Angela Burns Baker, an assistant principal and head of the federal programs, as well as from the home of William Brengle, a retired assistant principal. Herman filed the suit in February on behalf of Sam Ferry, Rich Simpson and Michelle Tyler.

No one has been named as a defendant. Herman would not give any information on the latest motions, such as who might have authored them. Some comments in the most recent motions date back to 2010 and 2011, while others are as recent as May, he said. Some of the comments allege his clients used drugs and had sex with animals, he said, which are similar to allegations outlined in the suit. Her- man said that if the judge ruled in his favor, it could be a month or more until the Internet providers turned over the information.

The allegations in the suit have caused a firestorm in the district. Dianne Critchlow, 48, agreed to retire but denied she had made the comments. Her husband, Jamie Critchlow, was fired from his job as director of the Bridges Alternative School. The Bakers kept their jobs, but lost two weeks of pay and forfeited vacation or sick days. The paychecks Dianne Critchlow retired with a $267,468 salary, among the highest in the state angered many at a time when the district must trim $7 million from its budget.

a problem the new chief financial officer has attributed partly to increasing costs for administrator pay. The Fox School Board meets next at 7 p.m. Monday at the Fox C-6 Service Center, 849 Jeffco Boulevard in Arnold. The board is expected to discuss the search for a new superintendent as well as the 2014-2015 budget.
