Car Pricing Tricks Hit By O'Brien Special To The Beacon Journal WASHINGTON John L. O'Brien, president of the A'-on Better Business Bureau, today told a Senate subcommittee that deceptive pricing coupled with ballyhoo-type advertising has caused general stance among the auto ring public. ('Brien was called as a witn' before the Senate Subcommittee on Automotive Marketing, S. Practices, "Mike" headed Monr vey, Oklahoma Democrat. The Akronite testified as a resentative of the Association of Better Business Bureaus Committee on Installment Contracts.

He reported on the BBB's records of auto price complaints. O'BRIEN'S testimony was In connection with a bill to require auto dealers to plainly mark prices of autos, transportation costs and accessories on the cars when displayed to the public. Confusing and misleading advertising has infected an increasing segment of the auto business, O'Brien testified. The Akron BBB chief said the experience of Better Business Bureaus has shown a major1ty of reputable dealers would welcome "some return to sanity in car pricing and straight dealing." A big problem, O'Brien said, 1s that customers are led to believe by exaggerated advertising claims that their old cars are worth more than any reasonable market can pay. What customers lose sight of.

he continued, is that the selling price of the new car and all its accessories often are padded several hundreds dollars to make up for the puffed-up trade in. deal. IN REPORTING on a storm of consumer protest reflected in BBB bulletins from a dozen cities, O'Brien quoted a Pittsburgh school teacher, whose experience at the hands of a high pressure auto dealer led her to write the BBB: "I believe in my classroom I hammer away at honesty, integrity, fair play, etc. Am I creating sitting ducks to pick off in a few years?" O'Brien quoted the president of the National Automobile Dealers Association as having saidine automotive industry has reached a time for decision. Either it will become an out-and-out racket, operating generally at the lowest level element as it does today, or It will adopt a complete new set of ground rules--and in time become one of the most respected segments of Americans business." As examples of the constructive effort that auto industry can make.

O'Brien pointed out the successful unified selling efforts by dealer association in Akron and Cleveland. Similar plain talk on prices will go far to restore of the lost tomer confidence, O'Brien testified. Hardly Fair HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (P)- On the last day of Crime Prevention Week here, Atty. Richard Hobbs- chairman of an Exchange Club committee which had carried out a program of publicity for observance of the week-made a sheepish confession to mittee members.
