MRS. CONANT'S DEBUT AT BONN A DREARY AFFAIR A Hat But No Chat At Tea Party' By JUDY BARDEN Beacon Journal-Chicago Daily News Service BONN, Germany A tea party to subdue all Boston tea parties, was held by the American Women's Club to introduce Mrs. James B. Conant, wife of the high commissioner here in Bonn. We didn't go mad and throw tea into the Rhine which flows outside the windows of the club.

We just sat, sat, sat, around small tables artfully placed out of reach of the cup and saucer, plate and napkin. Telephone calls were made prior to this event, to some women requesting that they please wear a hat. One girl, and no "dogpatcher" either, didn't possess a hat owing to a crop of attractive wiry curls upon which no hat would sit. Slightly hurt, she had tea alone, at home. But she wasn't missed.

One hundred and fifty wives turned out in their bestest best and proved that crooked little fingers while holding the cup is an American as well as a British gymnastic. WE LOOKED a drab lot despite our efforts. Having heard about the hat order we all arrived in our conventional dark suits, stud earrings and conservative costume jewelry. Some of us went so far as to have a "touch of white here and there." Our voices, however, remained low-toned, well modulated. But the hats.

Obviously, the girl who was having tea at home alone was not the only one who didn't have a hat. Two women wore Summer straws. One woman, wore a bunch of violets plonk in the center of her head, tied on with a narrow piece of black velvet. Halfway through the tea, the bow at the nape of her neck came untied and the violets fell in her lap. The laughter was subdued.

ON ARRIVAL we queued in a long line with our names pinned to our chests to meet Mrs. Conant, a charming lady who was forced to stand at the door for one hour because several people didn't see fit to arrive on time. Introductions over we wandered off down the thickly carpeted lounge until we saw a vacant seat. There were no "Hi-ya, chums" called to friends. It went like this.

"Excuse me, is this seat taken "No, not at the moment." "Do you mind if I sit here "No, not at all."
