7 Winstein: Hes Top Drawer In Sports soon will be producing drawing No. 4000 for our Sports Pages. The drawing above is of Carl Hubbell, the Giant pitching ace who was shooting for his 21st consecutive victory on May 12, 1937. It was Bill's first published sports drawing. Bill Winstein is not easily given to flattery.

He is devoted to his job and needs only to know that his artwork is appreciated by Press readers. They say no man can have two loves, but Bill Winstein does: art and sports. And both are better for it. Wabash freight house and asked the late Press Sports Artist Jack Berger if he might draw a few pictures. "Be my guest," Mr.

Berger said. Bill who never had an art lesson convinced Mr. Berger that he shouldn't be handling freight. Several months later, The Press hired him "on a two-week tryout." "I never thought I'd last," Bill recalls. But two weeks clicked off into two months, then two years and here it is, 1968, and Bill Winstein When Sill Winstein was in first grade, he was the best "drawer" in his class.

And today, nearly 50 years later, Bill still is in a class by himself when it comes to drawing. What he does with a pen and pencil is, indeed, an art. It's an art that has been enjoyed by millions who read The Press Sports Pages daily and Sunday.
