1 Garden City Telegram Monday. June 5. 1978 Page 3 Show Prizes Top $10,000 More than $10,000 in prize money was handed out Sunday morning to winners in the Beef Empire Days live and carcass show. The awards breakfast was at the Wheat Lands Convention Center. Big winners with $1,000 checks each were the champions in the steer division.

Bee Cattle Co. had the champion in the live division. The steer was fed at Lane County Feeders, Dighton. Jim Meetz was presented the check and silver platter. Champion carcass was owned by Vincent Youngren, of Youngren Feedyard, Hugoton.

Champions in the heifer division got $750 each. A heifer owned by A.C. and Bill Wood, of Syracuse, and fed at Cowtown Feeders, was the winner in the live division. Champion carcass was owned by Hess Brothers Feedlot. Reserve champion in the steer carcass division was an animal owned by Jim Miller, of Miller Feedyard, Satanta, best carcass.

In the live division, a steer owned by Western Cattle and Dennis Kleysteuber and fed at Kearny County Feeders was the second place finisher. The reserve champions got $600 each. KING COOKOUT 7, KANSA KENNETH OWEN, left, Lakin, was Garden City, took second place and named 1978 National Beef King at Rick Lane, Lakin, took third. Thompson, injured his left hand in a mower accident about 7 p.m. Sunday and was admitted to St. Catherine Hospital. Anstaett was attempting to clean out his riding mower which had become stopped up. His knee accidentally hit the clutch, he said.

9 Carlin Rails Governor For Lack of Leadership State Rep. John Carlin (D- Smolan), Democratic for governor, Saturday accused the administration of Gov. Robert Bennett of an "inability to carry, out the necessary functions of government." Carlin conducted a news Saturday at the Garden City Hilton Inn after taking part in the Beef Empire Days parade that morning. He said it was his fourth visit to Garden City since the campaign began. "It is one of the chief responsibilities of any governor to provide Carlin said, "and we -have not had that leadership under the current administration." The woman, Isabel Campos, 19, was diverted to St. Catherine Hospital when she went into labor after the car in which she was riding with her family went off the road on US83 12 miles south of Garden City. Finney County Sheriff's deputy and an emergency medical service unit were dispatched to the scene after a nearby resident telephoned for help. Deputy Mario Tursini said no one was hurt in the accident, but there were some anxious moments. "I guess she went into labor on the spot.

I didn't think she was going to make it in time," Tursini said. THE EMS unit rushed Campos to St. Catherine, where she gave birth to a baby girl that afternoon. Mother and daughter were reported to be doing well at the hospital on Monday. Boat Inspection Offered Tuesday Boaters can have their boats inspected for free Tuesday.

A safety boat inspection checklane will be open from 3:30 to 8 p.m. at the Fish and Game Headquarters south of Garden City on US83. State game, protector Richard Harrold said boats being inspected should be equipped with safety equipment required by law. Boaters also should bring their registration and number. The check lane is "strictly voluntary and not datory" for boaters, Harrold said.

Participants will be given a proof of inspection sticker for their boats. 'Influence' Claim Not Understood od Bette Jo Roberts, the person in charge of Gov. Robert Bennett's regional office in Garden City, is quick to defend her office against charges that it does not have any pull in Topeka. Responding to a Saturday -statement by John Carlin, Democratic candidate for gubernatorial nomination, that the regional offices do not have any influence with the State house, Roberts said, "I know how many people we've helped and I didn't know ina fluence was necessary." Roberts, whose title is administrative assistant to the governor, said that it was not a question of influence so much as knowing where to go Grandstand Judging Winners Announced Winners in the grandstand judging contest were named Sunday morning at the Beef Empire Days awards breakfast at Wheat Lands Convention Center. Grandstand judging, an event added in recent years, is held during the first day of the show at the same time the steers and heifers are being paraded for the professional judge.

Animals are evaluated on quality grade and yield grade basis. Roy G. Ehrhart SCOTT CITY Roy G. Ehrhart, 87, died Saturday at Scott County Hospital. Born Feb.

23, 1891, at MaComb, he married Lena L. Hughes Sept. 8, 1909, at Hale, Mo. She died July 19, 1960. He later married Thressa Kough at Scott City.

She died Nov. 5, 1975. Mr. Ehrhart was a retired merchant and repairman, and had lived in Scott City since 1940. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Scott City, and Modern Woodmen.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Mike Graeff, Scott City; two stepsons, Dwight Kough, Shadduck, Okla. and Conard Kough, Scott City; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Mae Shehan, San Bernadino, Calif, and Mrs. Virgie Allen, Las Vegas, a brother, Claude, Colorado Springs, a grandchild; two greatgrandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, the Rev. John Martin officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery. Friends may call until service time at WeimannPrice Funeral Home, Scott City.

Family suggests memorials to Park Lane Rest Home, Scott City. Team winner in the 4-H division was the Trailblazers from Scott County with 1439 points. Team members were Brad Krebs, Steve Landgraf and Michelle Maddox. Individual winner with 504 points was Vince Koons, Kearny County. Youth division winner was Brad Fansher, 507 points.

Catherine Hospital, Garden City, following a long illness. Born Ruth Russell Jan. 20, 1913, at Monett, Mo. she married Alva Loucks Dec. 2, 1944, at Longview, Texas.

She had lived here since 1945. Mrs. Loucks was a member of the United Methodist Church, Copeland. Survivors include the husband; a daughter, Mrs. Rose Marie Sebastian, Oklahoma City, a brother, Melvin Russell, Quinton, sister, Mrs.

Bertha Robinson, Oklahoma City; and one grandchild. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Revs. Walter Birney and Sheldon Cox officiating. Burial will be in Copeland Cemetery.

Ryan ULYSSES John Alexander Ryan, 21, died Thursday at Riverton Hospital, Riverton, after a fall at the Amoco Oil Company, Riverton. Born May 25, 1957, at Oklahoma City, he was employed by the Amoco Oil Company and had lived here In the professional stockman division, only 10 points separated the first five places.
