"I was supposed to be home from the park at 5:30, and it was 5:45, so I thought I was going to be in trouble," Christina said. "But then my mom started yelling that I won the contest, and I couldn't believe it.

I dropped my bike and starting hugging my friend who was with me. I was screaming all over." Christina, a sixth grader at the Marshall W. Errickson School, traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah, last month as the grand prize winner of the "Jet For A Day" sweepstakes, a national contest sponsored by Nickelodeon, a cable television network. Christina and her mother Martha spent three days in Utah and attended a concert by The Jets, a pop-rock group whose videos are shown often on "Nick Rocks," a Nickelodeon show. In addition, the spunky, enthusiastic Christina appeared on camera as a special guest host for Nick Rocks, interviewing three of the Jets and introducing several videos.

"It is so cool to see yourself on TV," Christina said. "I got to do a lot of different sketches and stuff." The Nick Rocks camera crew taped two hours of sketches and interviews by Christina, who received a copy of the finished program and also a tape of outtakes that were not used on TV. "I really like being on TV," Christina said. "All my friends were so jealous. They were saying, 'Will you get me an autograph, will you get me a A photographer from "16 Magazine" also shot photos of Christina and the Jets to be used in an upcoming issue, she said.

Mrs. Valente said the Jets were very friendly. "I couldn't believe how nice they were," she said. "You always think of rock stars as being sort of snobbish, but they weren't like that at all." The Valentes, including Christina's father Angelo and 7-year-old brother Anthony, moved to Freehold Township from Kearny about two years ago, Mrs. Valente said.

Christina collected all the Jets' autographs and also took down their addresses. "I'm going to write to all of them," she said. "They're one of coupon form. "I thought I would have to move out to the garage to make room for all the Kool-Aid," Mrs. Valente said, "but they sent coupons instead." She said her daughter is a big music fan who often skips through the house, pretending to play a make-believe guitar or piano.

"I love rock music, especially heavy metal," Christina said, despite a sigh of disapproval from her mother. She said she also likes to play soccer, ride her bicycle, and visit nearby Liberty Oak Park. "That's where I was coming from the night I learned I won the contest," she said. Now that she has been a grand prize winner, Christina said she has no intention of resting on her winnings. "I just entered a 'Meet the Monkees' contest," she said.

my favorite groups." Meeting the Jets and seeing the mountains of Utah were the two things that impressed Christina most about the trip, she said. "I'd never been in the West before," she said. "I've always been to Florida, and I went to Italy once, so I'm sort of a world traveler, but I'd never been to where the mountains are." During their stay in Utah, Christina and her mother traveled around the city in a limousine provided by Nickelodeon. Christina also received $500 in spending money. "I bought everything," she said with a grin.

T-shirts, buttons, stuffed animals, a sweatshirt and a Jets poster were just some of the items she brought back to New Jersey. The Valentes also received a year's supply of "Kool-Aid Koolers" soft drinks, which luckily came in NORWOOD PRIME MEAT GABLES SHOPPING CENTER (Across from Jersey Shore Medical Center) RT. 33 NEPTUNE, N.J. 988-6363 Specials Run From Wed. thru Tubs.
