5. Obituaries 4-THE HERALD, Provo, Utah Friday, April 7, 1972 Obituaries Evelyn D. Gunn Evelyn Dutson Gunn, 70, 1375 W. 5th No. Nine, Provo, died Thursday evening of heart failure at her home.

She was born May 2, 1901, in Leamington, Utah, a daughter of Mathias Caieb and Christana Anderson Dutson. She married Harold Gunn July 26, 1922, in Salt Lake City and the marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. She was active in the auxiliaries of the LDS Church, especially serving as organist. For most of her life she lived in California, but moved to Provo in June, 1971. Survivors include her husband, Provo; two sons and one daughter, Harold Gunn Simi Valley, Terry Lynn Gunn, Leadville, Mrs.

James (Colleen) Craddock, Provo; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother and five sisters, Rulon Dutson, Leamington; Mrs. Rex (Rita) Peterson, Scipio; Mrs. Woodrow (Chloe) Pace, Los Angeles, Mrs. Helmer (Dorthella) Soderquist, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Leslie (Christy) Pioche, Mrs.

James (Verla) McGuire, Fullerton, Calif. Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary Chapel 495 S. State, Orem, where friends may call Monday, one hour before services. will be in the Provo City Cemetery.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. Funeral services for Cheryl Hancock, nine daughter of and Joanne McLaren Hancock, Sacramento, who died Wednesday in a Sacramento hospital, will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the Berg Mortuary Chapel in Provo. Friends may call at the mortuary Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday before services.

Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery. Additional services were held this afternoon in Sacramento. She was born June 28, 1971. Her parents were former residents of Provo and Orem. Her father was a member of the LDS Church, active in music circles in the Provo Third Ward.

He attended Brigham Young University. Survivors include her parents, Sacramento; four sisters, Karen, Kaye, Nancy and Jill Hancock, all of Sacramento; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. McLaren, Orem; Mr.

SAVE NOW AT BEESLEY MONUMENT VAULT 725 South State Provo, Utah 374-0580 Stolen Car Races Into Tourists NEW ORLEANS (UPI)-A stolen car racing through a pedestrians-only area of Bourbon Street in the French Quarter plowed into crowds of tourists late Thursday, killing one and injuring 18. "There was no warning," said a hot dog vendor. "All of a sudden, here he came--bam, -and then they were scattered all over." The car was driven by two men 1 who were being chased by police. It crashed through barricades that are put up nightly to keep cars off the brightly lighted main street of the New Orleans jazz section. The car finally crashed into a pole and the two men escaped on foot.

Police rounded up five suspects, but said they had "nothing definite" early today. Dr. John Russeli, a New Orleans doctor, who happened to be on Bourbon Street at the time helped attend to the injured. Ex-Fireman In Provo Dies at 67 PAYSON Golden Leon Jackman, 67, 190 S. 3rd Payson, resident of Provo for many years, died Thursday evening in the Payson City Hospital.

He had been ill for the past three years. He was born Nov. 6, 1904, in Central, Sevier County, to Daniel Wells and Sarah Miranda Marble Jackman. He married Teton Mattie Hanks on July 9, 1926, in the Logan Temple. Mr.

Jackman was educated in Salem and Spanish Fork schools and was a graduate of Brigham Young University. He taught school in Garfield and Nebo Districts for 10 years, worked in the construction of Geneva Steel Plant and was employed by the Provo Fire Department from 1940 to 1960. He taught First Aid classes there. Active in the LDS Church, he was a High Priest in the Payson First Ward at the time of his death. He had served a stake mission in Provo, was stake financial clerk and was a temple worker in the Salt Lake Temple for many years.

Survivors include his widow, Payson; four sons and two daughters, Elden Leon Jackman, Fargo, N.D.; Nolan R. Jackman, Provo; Eugene G. Jackman, LeGrand H. Jackman and Mrs. Edward (Alona) Veatch, all of Orem; Mrs.

Douglas (Flora) Harrington, Payson; 31 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers and one sister, Henry O. Jackman, Springville; Perry V. Jackman, Salem; Rulon L. Jackman (his twin), American Fork; Gladys J. Graham, Poctaello, Ida.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Walker Mortuary in Payson under the direction of Bishop Dennis Dixon. Friends may cail at the mortuary Saturday two hours before services. Smith, associate professor in the Business Education Department, Brigham Young University, was one of the featured speakers at the recently concluded Western Business Education Association Convention at the Hote! Utah in Salt Lake City, Dr. Smith's representation was entitled "Hey Teach, We Flunked Attitude." His presentation emphasized the dangers involved in trying to build educational systems. Oftentimes when we build systems we tend to build out the human element, he said.

"As business teachers, we need to be most concerned with the individual, not the subject matter," Dr. Smith stated. The presentation was designed to emphasize the importance of attitude on the part of the teacher in the classroom. Belle Spafford To Speak at 'Y' Devotional Mrs. Belle S.

Spafford, president of the Relief Society for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, will be the Brigham Young University devotional assembly speaker Tuesday, April 11, at 10 a.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse. As Relief Society president, Mrs. Spafford is in charge of women's organizations in all states and in many foreign countries, with a total membership of over 300,000. In 1968 she was chosen president of the National Council of Women with a membership of approximately 16 million American women.

She a received the BYU Distinguished Service award in 1951 and an honorary doctor of humanities degree in 1956. Educated i in Latter -day Saints University and Normal School at the University of Utah, she taught in Salt Lake City schools, became grade supervisor, and later special instructor of remedial work at the BYU Training School. After serving on stake Relief Society boards, she was called to the General Board of the I Relief Society and named editor of the Relief Society Magazine. She became counselor to President Amy Brown Lyman in 1940, and in 1945 became president of the Relief Society. Mrs.

Spafford was married to Willis Earl Spafford in 1921 and is the mother of two children. Smith indicated that teachers should spend time interviewing each of their students to get to know them better, to become friends with them.

Teachers need to love their students. The Western Business Education Association is made up of business teachers from ten Western States, Guam and the Province of Alberta, Canada. Junk cars will be picked up at about 10 locations in Provo this weekend under the cooperative program for cleanup and beautification announced by City Commissioner Ray Murdock. Under the plan, people with an old car to be removed are to contact Commissioner Murdock or Troy A. Mott at the city offices who will arrange for the Army Reserve to pick up the vehicle and transport it to the American Auto plant for salvage. Owners should transfer the title to Provo City but in case the title can't be located arrangements probably can be made for disposal of the junker anyway, Commissioner Murdock said. The Army Reserve will remove as many vehicles will as possible this weekend and get others later as time allows. Betty Crocker Contest Names Ogden Senior MINNEAPOLIS (UPI) A Weber High School senior from Ogden, Utah, has been named Utah's 1972 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow.

The announcement came today from the offices of General Mills, sponsor of the annual competition. She is Jolene Terry, and a spokesman said Miss Terry will receive a $1,500 college scholarship and be eligible for national honors. Named runner-up in Utah and winner of a $500 college grant was Aleta Barton Gatrell, Kaysville, a student at Davis County High School. The spokesman said the two girls competed with some 650,000 senior girls in over 500 of the nation's high schools. By MILDRED B.

HALL 373-8563 373-0546 Mrs. Wendell (Rosalie) Christensen and children, Debbie, Cindy, Julie and Peggy, spent the past weekend in Provo from their home in Brigham City, Mrs. Christensen, carne to join her daughter, Wendy, a student at Brigham Young University, who was honored with others in a social evening on Saturday in which the new presidents of the women's dormitories at BYU were installed. Wendy has been made president over 25 dorms, housing some 1500 students. The visitors also enjoyed visiting at the home of Rosalie's parents, Mr.

and Mrs. A. Alfred Swenson and her husband's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Christensen, all of Provo.

Her sister, Mrs. Gene Erekson and her children came over from Springville to join the group. Mr. Christensen was on an U.S. Air Force Reserve assignment during the weekend.

Mrs. Lillian Groneman of Provo reports spending two enjoyable days in 1 Taylorsville visiting children, Ronald Bill and Janet Groneman Schultz. On Easter Sunday she joined family members at services in which the Schultzes fifth child, a boy, received his name of Peter Steven Schoultz at the Taylorsville Eleventh Ward. Mr. and Mrs.

E.H. Asay have as their visitors during this week, their son, Jesse Asay with his wife, Janice, and the couple's four children, who are here from Everett, to see parents and grandparents and for Bishop Asay to attend LDS General Conference in Salt Lake City. Among out-of-twon familles enjoying Easter vacation visits in this area, are Wallace D. Charmaine Kirk Hadfield and children of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They are being entertained at the home of parents, Mr.

and Mrs. Melvin J. Kirk in Provo. It was expected that they would be leaving for their home on Saturday. news and Provo Mrs.

Bert grandparents, Kirkwhood, journeyed to Salt Lake City during the week to see their daughter, Rosalie and her husband, Paul Jensen and their new first child. They were also present when the little boy received his name of Jared. His paternal grandparents of Rexburg, were also present as were great -grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Walker of Salt Lake City, as well as other relatives.

A family dinner followed. It is a long time since 1949, but Mr. and Mrs. J. R.

Lane, were able to recognize Mr. Lane's nephew, Ilo Fuller, when he, with his wife and their son, Charles, called to see them this week for the first time since that time. Charles, who is serving in the Army was home on leave after service in Vietnam and had taken his parents on a visit to California. The group was en route back to their home in Newport, where Charles will leave again for an additional assignment in Vietnam. Joy Sorenson Payne, wife of U.S.

Air Force Second Lieutenant Craig Payne with her small son, Jared, have arrived in Provo and plan to remain for a month of visiting with parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Dow Sorenson, together with friends and her sister Judy and husband, Roger Openshaw, and family in Sandy. During the interim, Lt.

Payne is attending a special school. The family reside at Elsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. RAMON S. SCRUGGS BYU Names Resident Executive Ramon S. Scruggs minority affairs director of the Department of Environmental Research and Development, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, will be an executive in residence at April 10-21.

Brigham a Young University, Mr. Scruggs, who has previously appeared on the BYU Academic Emphasis Lecture Series, will live on campus for two weeks, visiting classes, holding seminars and symposiums and talking with students. A native of Nashville, and a graduate of Fisk University, Mr. Scruggs' career with the American Telephone and Telegraph Company has been primarily in public relations and urban affairs. He joined the Michigan Bell Telephone Company in 1939, and has been with the New York offices of the parent company since 1963.

Very much involved in Urban problems, Mr. Scruggs, has served as director for the National Assembly for Social Policy and Development, president of the Detroit Urban League, director of the Booker T. Washington Business Association and as senior vice president of the Nation Urban League Board. From 1965-70 he served chairman of the VicePresident's Task Force on Youth Motivation, and he was executive director of the first Detroit campaign for the United Negro College Fund. He now serves as a trustee for both Fisk University and Hampton Institute.

Expecting to achieve his 14th birthday anniversary on Saturday, Apr. 8, Rodney Duncan was surprised on Tuesday to find a party arranged and guests arriving at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert M. Duncan, Provo.

Friends gathered enjoyed a barbecue supper out-of-doors with games and entertainment following. Guests included Kurt Frischknecht, Kyle Allred, Chris Wight, Jess Kimball, Mark VanBloem, Eruce Fransworth, John Lewis, Bill Davis and his cousin from Spanish Fork, Kenneth Johnson. Rodney will be among others of the above boys, joining Boy Scouts on a 35- mile hike along the old Spanish Trail. The group left Thursday and were slated to return on Saturday. Good Friday was celebrated last week at the home of Mrs.

Margaret Zabriskie in Spanish Fork as the following persons enjoyed dinner and hot cross buns: John B. Thomas of Provo, Mrs. Otelia Huntington of Spanish Fork, Mrs. Alice Jarvis, Mrs. Lucille Jarvis and Mrs.

Lois B. Roach of Palmyra. Forty years ago Mrs. Sarah Tolhurst began this tradition of inviting neighbors in on Good Friday for luncheon and hot cross buns. Mrs.

Kate B. Thomas of Palmyra continued the event with the daughters and daughters-in-law of the original guests.
