LOUIS, who promoted racial harmony and an increased role for women during 12 years at the head of the St. Louis Diocese, died of brain cancer. He was 71. Archbishop May, who retired in late 1992 because of his illness, died Thursday night at the Mary Queen and Mother Center, said the Rev. Ed Sudekum, diocese spokesman.

He was installed as the sixth archbishop of St. Louis in 1980. Before that, he was bishop in Mobile, for 11 years. As head of the St. Louis Diocese, he served as the spiritual leader for a half-million Roman Catholics in 10 Missouri counties.

He said knew many of the difficulties facing modern American Catholics. "Catholics at one time were known as people who rarely had a divorce in their family, where such things as outof-wedlock pregnancies were very rare, and Catholic kids had different values on such things as sex, drugs, alcohol and so on," he once said. "Unfortunately, I think that we, like most of American society, have been taken in by much of the sexual revolution, much of the pleasure principle, much of the consumerism," he said. "Catholics are like everybody else. They want to give their kids the best but they also want to give them the best in values.

Sometimes it's hard to keep a balance." In his columns in the archdiocesan newspaper and elsewhere, he consistently urged racial harmony. He worked to strengthen ties with Protestants and non-Christians, opened doors to women to serve the church as readers, servers and important members of the archdiocesan staff, and pressed for outreach to AIDS patients. Archbishop May, a native of Evanston, studied theology at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, and was ordained a priest in 1947. He underwent surgery to remove a malignant brain tumor in July 1992.

He stepped down five months later, though he retained his title until his successor, Archbishop Justin F. Rigali, assumed leadership of the archdiocese March 16. Archbishop May had lapsed into a coma three days earlier. The Associated Press CHARLES W. CHAMBERLAIN, of OSPREY, an Associated Press newsman for 43 years who covered everything from sports to the Allied victory in World War II, has died at age 77.

Mr. Chamberlain died Thursday of emphysema at his home. For decades, Mr. Chamberlain's byline was a fixture on AP wires. He was best known for features that, as one AP bureau chief once put it, "made people laugh a little or cry a little." "Charlie was the consummate professional, a highly respected writer and editor," said Jim Wilson, AP chief of bureau in Chicago.

"Even more important than that, he was a gentleman." Born in Parsons, Mr. Chamberlain joined the AP in 1941 as a $40-a-week overnight wire editor in the Kansas City bureau. He transferred to AP's Chicago bureau as a sports writer the following year. In 1944, he moved to Europe as a war correspondent, covering the London blitz and the British army's advance across Europe. He also covered Nazi -crimes trials at Nuremberg and Luneberg, and obtained the first postwar interview with German physicist Otto Hahn about the Nazi government's efforts to build an atom bomb.

Returning to Chicago and sports writing after the war, Mr. Chamberlain wrote a column under the nickname "Swami" in which he predicted the outcome of sports events. He also covered college football, baseball, golf, horse racing, hockey and other sports. "He would go out on a story and have his own mind made up on how to handle it," said retired AP sports writer Joe Mooshil, who worked with Mr. Chamberlain for more than 30 years.

"Charlie would do it his way and usually it was the best way."
