February 2, 1957 RENO EVENING GAZETTE Exciting New Trio Joins Harrah Club Big Variety Show Staged Every Night at Riverside An exciting new trio joins the Harrahs Club theater bar lineup 1 1 jfi this week at Lake Tahoe. Los p. a 1 I 4 i I i Knp CI keep the expectancy at high pitch, while Tommy Wonder and Margaret Banks, with Don Bellair, intermingle with the Riverside Starlets" to give the feel of a big Broadway review. The Hank Penny-Sue Thompson show, in the cocktail lounge, greets the merrymakers with Nortenos, direct from Las Vegas, warm up this 6500 foot altitude with their authentic Latin rhythms. A comparatively new act to this seven men all experts at their country, the trio already has an impressive background, including Mert Wertheimer is putting on the biggest variety show seen in many a moon at the Riverside: the Hi-Lo's, juke box favorjte quartet; the Trio Bassi, Tommy Wonder and Margaret Banks, with Don Bellair; the Riverside Starlets and Bill Clifford's orchestra with the stunning new singer, Louise Vienna.

The Hi-Lo's, in case you're old enough to read, copped the Billboard and Variety polls as the hottest new group in the tonsil exercise business. A few years from now, the Riverside will be claiming it helped this group to get started. Right now, the Hi-Lo's render a nifty half hour of comedy and music a la cashmere. The Trio Bassi, fresh from applause abroad, bounces along to voice drubbing for the motion pic instruments. With the Dizzy Darlings alternating, the Penny show is worth the price of any way.

Lowell Hawk at the Corner Bar piano is building a clientele which expects special music for all( tures "The King and and "Guys ana Dons. Very popular in Mexico City before they began a tour of top spots in the United I States, Los Nortenos has 25 Mex ican movies to their credit, plus TV and radio shows, nightclub 1 and theatre engagements. Now in their second week at Tahoe's Harrahs Club, and certain to be held over, is the unusual Merry Mac Song Style Heavy Draw Name your style of singing and the Merry Macs will give it to you. The clever quartet, signed for the Mapes Sky Room here by Charles Mapes is proving the biggest mid-winter draw in recent Reno nitery history. Able to pace their offerings from smooth ballads like "Sentimental Journey" to bouncers like "Mairzie Doats," they can also belt out rock roll in the approved style of the day.

For the group that actually introduced "blend singing" to the American show scene, it's an easy chore to mimic the style of some of today's pep groups. They dash off "Piano Roll Rock and "I'm a Lovin' You, Rock" with tongue in cheek attitude. Number that draws the most thunder from the diners is their treatment of "Mutual Admiration Society." Another one, good for yocks, is funny-hat "In a Little Red Barn." The group takes a fast skip down memory path with a medley that lets them sing a few bars from their top records, "Hut Sut," "Praise the Lord" and "Sentimental Journey" are only half the numbers that ring the bell for watchers. Noted for their clever business bits with each vocal, the group meshes nicely and executes some intricate footwork while never missing a note. Backing the Merry Macs in the current engagement is dancer Bobby Brandt.

Using stock tap steps as a springboard, he executes a series of forward flips that seem to leave him suspended head down only a few inches from the floor. Tap-robatics is an apt name for the routine presented by this agile wire. The Mapes Skylets, in two Joy Healy productions, unwrap and duo, Johhny Denis and Netta Rogers, adept in calypso, pop, Nike Specialist Course Finished Sgt. Lloyd D. Miss Rogers, a perpetual motion package, displays an ex cellent voice on ballads, then makes a complete switch to blast such numbers as "Hound Dog" in the accepted fashion of the day.
