I NEBRASKA, OKLAHOMA 'A lot of red' for the '71 Big Eight By ROBERT MOORE KANSAS CITY (AP) Coach Vince Gibson of Kansas State probably expressed it better than anyone else Monday at the annual Big Eight Conference football kickoff luncheon. "We're going to see a lot of red this season," said Gibson, dressed in a purple suit symbolic of the Purple Pride he preaches at Kansas State, What Gibson meant was that Nebraska and Oklahoma are the teams to beat in the Big Eight the coming season. Nebraska won both the Big Eight and national championships in 1970. Oklahoma finished in a tie with Kansas State for second place in the conference and has its backfield returning intact. Oklahoma lost to Nebraska by only 28-21 a year ago.

Gibson said the "other six of us will be charging Oklahoma and Nebraska." Nebraska Coach Bob Devaney would say merely that will be a real tough race." Of his own- team, Devaney said Nebraska's 'offensive line is a "question mark. We've lost four starters from the offensive line. We don't have two tackles as good as Bob Newton nor an end like Guy Ingles." Devaney did say that sophomore David Humm could press Nebraska's two senior quarterbacks, Jerry Tagge and Van Brownson, for the quarterback position which means Cornhusker opponents may have to contend with three signal-calling stars this season instead of only two. "Whoever is better will play," Devaney said. "All of them are quick but not fast." "We can have a good football team," Oklahoma Coach Chuck Fairbanks admitted.

"I think our team will have a chance to I be competitive against everybody we play, and we are dertaking the most demanding schedule we have had at Oklahoma. "We have some. problems. We hope to have a more effec- Baseball standings W. L.

Gibson said of Kansas State: "We are not going to fail on our face, It's not embarrassing to play at Kansas any more. This is a different era. I think we can have a fine football team. "We'll have better balance.

We put everything on our quarterback, Lynn Dickey, last year." Most of the coaches agreed that Colorado will finish in the upper division. Buff Coach Eddie Crowder wasn't quite so optimistic although he did say, "We've got a real good team. We'll have five. or six new men on both fense and defense. Defensively, we'll be a little more experienced than on offense.

I don't know where we stand in the power structure of the conference." Coaches Don Fambrough of Kansas, Floyd Gass' of Oklahoma State, Johnny Majors of Iowa State and Al Onofrio of Missouri all indicated they expect improved teams. Fambrough, one of two new head coaches in the league this season, said the Jayhawks have "a chance to have a real potent running game. If we can find some receivers; we're going to throw the ball a lot. "Depth is our big problem. We had five players who had knee operations and one a shoulder operation right after spring practice." Senior Dan Heck and sophomore David Jaynes will be competing for the Kansas quarterback slot but Fambrough noted that "Heck is a competitor, and anybody who beats him out has to be a pretty good quarterback." Gass said the Cowboys will be young with 26 sophomores but "we're optimistic.

We'll be bigger as far as our running backs are concerned. We'll probably pass as much as last year, and Tony Pounds and sophomore Brent Blackman could battle for the quarterback post." Majors has lost star receiver Otto Stowe and seven defensive starters from the Iowa State team that finished last in 1970 but has two crack quarterbacks, Dean Carlton and George Amundson. "I don't know how to handle two quarterbacks like Devaney Majors said, "but it better to have two than only one. Iowa State will be bigger up front. The linebacking can be the best we've had, I think we can win this season, and the players think so." Onofrio succeeds Dan Devine at Missouri.

Devine left to join the Green Bay Packers. "Our defensive team is experienced with 10 seniors," said Onofrio. "You have to have defense to win but I don't think you can win just with defense any more. I really don't know what type of team we'll have." Onofrio said the Tigers have only two starters back on offense and "one is a combination of Mike Farmer and Chucker Roper." Farmer and Roper shared the quarterbacking duties last season and both have had operations since last autumn. "I'm optimistic," concluded Onofrio.

Frank Ryan, director of information for the U. S. House of Representatives, attempted only five passes in his two seasons 'as Washington Redskin backup quarterback. By BERT ROSENTHAL, Associated Press Sports Writer Twenty years ago Wednesday, the New York Giants trailed the Brooklyn Dodgers by games in the race for the National League pennant. The Giants then reeled off 13 consecutive victories and eventually beat the Dodgers 5-4 on Bobby Thomson's dramatic threerun homer i in the ninth inning of the third game of a threegame playoff.

Today, the roles--and the teams locations--are different. The Dodgers, now playing in Los Angeles, are in second place but they are moving up fast on the fading Giants of San Francisco. Monday night, the Dodgers sliced San Francisco's National League West lead to games--the smallest margin since July 7-with a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals and Bob Gibson. In the only other major league game Monday, an American League afternoon contest, the Boston Red Sox outslugged the Detroit Tigers 12-11.

The Dodgers, who have trimmed the Giants lead in half since falling nine games back on Aug. 1, blasted Cardinal pitching for 15 hits, including four each by Wes Parker and Willie Davis. The Dodgers, one of the few teams to hold' a lifetime edge over Gibson, pounded the Cards' ace for 14 hits in seven innings in beating him for the third straight time this season and the 20th time in 34 career decisions. Parker doubled following a Cardinal error in the second inning, before Duke Sims belted a two-run double. After the Cards tied it on Dal Maxvill's two-run single in the bottom of the second, the Dodgers again took a run lead in the third Trevino 'good' after operation TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M.

(AP) Golfer Lee Trevino was reported in good condition today after undergoing an emergency appendectomy performed at St. Anne's Hospital here, Trevino, professional golf's lead money winner this year, was stricken Monday evening after returning from Soccoro where he held a clinic at the New Mexico Junior PGA Tournament. The operation was performed by Dr. D. E.

Stoops of Truth Or Consequences, and Dr. Leonard R. Becker of Albuquerque, Surgery began about 2:30 a.m., EDT, and lasted about hours. "He's doing very well, He tolerated surgery very well," Dr. Stoops commented early today.

He said Trevino would be hospitalized about one week. The El Paso, native was visiting the area to do some fishing but took the time to give some instructions to the young golfers. Trevino has won $197,219 in PGA events this year, and also captured the. United States, British and Canadian Open tourna- titles. He won the three ments within a period of four weeks.

Since the British event, his playing has been off and just two weeks ago failed to make the cut at the Westchester Classic in New York. At that time he said he was tired and planned on taking a short rest which included some plans to spend time fishing. The Cards added a run in the third, and Ted Sizemore singled in two more runs in the eighth fore Jim Brewer came i in and preserved Downing's 14th victory. Richie Allen was a late scratch from the Dodger for the second time this season. Allen, the club leader in runs batted in, overslept and didn't get to the ballpark until the start of the game. Rico Petrocelli, making his first pinch hitting appearance of the season after being given a rest, capped the wild BostonDetroit slugfest with a run-scoring single in the ninth inning.

The hit was the 33rd in the game and scored John Kenne- dy, who had doubled, Rookie catcher Bob Montgomery drove in six Boston runs with a two-run double in the second and his first major league grand slam homer during an eight-run fourth. Detroit's Bill Freehan drilled three solo homers, Willie Horton smashed two homers and drove in five runs, and Aurelio Rodriguez cracked a solo homer. The game was enlivened by a melee in the sixth inning when Detroit reliever Bill Denehy hit Boston outfielder Reggie Smith with a pitch on his back just below the right shoulder. The two exchanged words as Smith headed towards first base, with Freehan, the Detroit catcher, standing between them, Then, Smith threw a punch over Freehan's shoulder that just missed Denehy, causing both dugouts and bullpens to empty. But there was no further trouble.

Pro football By ALEX SACHARE Associated Press Sports Writer Pro football lost its second glamor quarterback in less 48 3 hours Monday afternoon, when New York Giants signal-caller Fran Tarkenton the club and returned to his Atlanta home because he could reach a contract agreement with owner Wellington T. Mara. "I can't play football without contract," Tarkenton said Monday night. "Nothing else is involved except the contract. I cannot accept the offer they made me." Tarkenton, 31, reportedly earned $100,000 in 1970, when he the Giants to a 9-5 season, their best since 1963.

Tarkenton joins New York Jets' quarterback Joe Namath the sidelines. Namath continued to recuperate at New York's Lenox Hill Hospital following surgery Sunday morning repair torn ligaments and remove damaged cartilage in his left knee. Dr. James A. Nicholas, the Jets' team physician and the orthopedist who has performed all four of Namath's knee operations, speculated that Namath might be.

able to return to action for the Jets' game against the Baltimore Colts Nov. 14. "It's earlier than we'd like him Dr.Nicholas said. "The longer you give a thing like this, the better it will be in long run, "But it our game with the Colts on the 14th is a must type of thing, I don't think there would be any way of keeping Joe out of it." Tarkenton could be back on the playing field long before Nov. 14.

He emphasized that he is by no means retiring. "I didn't care to play the exhibition season without a contract," he declared. Does he want to play football this year? "I wouldn't have gone to camp if I didn't," he replied, Mara, the Giants' owner, revealed that Tarkenton had asked for "a high, six-figure loan" for his various business and philanthropic enterprises as part of his contract. "The loan is the real stumbling' block," Mara said at a news conference in Houston. "I tried to work it out, but my legal advisers told me there was no way we could do it." Whenever Tarkenton returns, it will not be soon enough for Giants' Coach Alex Webster, judging from the team's exhibition opener against the Houston Oilers Monday night in the Astrodome, Houston scored two quick touchdowns before the hometown fans, built up a 21-3 lead by halftime, then coasted to a 35-6 romp over the Giants.

With Tarkenton out of action, veterans Dick Shiner did most of the quarterbacking for New York, whose offense could manage only two Pete Gogolak field goals. In Monday night's other preseason contest the Philadelphia Eagles turned two blocked punts to their advantage and defeated the Oakland Raiders 25-24 in a West Coast game.

Linebacker Bill Hobs blocked two of Mike Eischeid's punt attempts. The first went through the end zone for a safety, and the second went for a touchdown when linebacker Ike Kelley fell on the ball in the end zone. Eagles' quarterback Pete Liske threw a TD pass to Lee Bouggess and rookie Happy Feller kicked three field goals completing the winners' scoring. Oakland scored on three touchdown passes by Ken Stabler, filling in for injured Daryle Lamonica. Two went to Eldridge the other to Clarence Davis.

George Blanda kicked a field goal for the Raiders' final three points. Tarkenton was not the only NFL veteran to leave his team Monday. Green Bay Coach Dan Devine lost starting offensive tackle Francis Peay, when the five-year veteran walked out of camp after an argument with Packer assistant coaches. "I'm extremely disappointed that Francis has chosen to disassociate himself from the squad," Devine, who coached Peay at the University of Missouri, said. "I'm sure he did what he felt he had to do.

However, his departure leaves us in a real bind at offensive tackle." Dick Himes, Bill Hayhoe and Pat Houlton are expected to vie for Peay's spot. BEATRICE DAILY SUN 200 N. 7th St. Beatrice, Nebraska 68310 Robert S. George P.
