NIT Did Moore's Team Plays Temple and La Salle In Philadelphia By ROY McHtC.Il For two weeks, more or less, Duquesne has been chasing a carrot on a stick. PIvery time the Dtikrs play a oasKetnaii game, trie prime consideration seems to be the effect it will have on their chances of winding up in the National Invitation Tournament. The suspense can't go on indefinitely, of course, and two games in Philadelphia next weekend oucht to settle things one way or the other.

Duquesne has a Friday night date with Temple and a Saturday night date with LaSalle at the University of Pennsylvania Palestra. They are definitely upper-crust opponents, and if Dudey Moore's team can break even, at least, all will be well. Assuming that Carnegie Tech leaves their apple cart upright, the Dukes would then have a 136 record, with only one more game out of four to be played on the road. Their meeting with Tech, at Pitt Field House, is scheduled for Tuesday night. The dancer here is that the Dukes will be overly-nonchalant, just as they were when the Quanticn Marines surprised them last week.

Tech will be back in the Field House to play the tour ing Israeli team One of the casualties of the city's growing pains in the Lower Hill District to make way for the Civic Auditorium is the Pittsburgh Lyceum, known In its hey-day as the "cradle of boxing champions." Rev. Lawrence'Connell, who has spent almost 60 years at Epiphany Church and founded the three-story Lyceum Building in 1903 at a cost of $30,000, admits we're living In an age of progress but the Lyceum holds rich memories for him and many others. "The Lyceum anticipated by year what we now know as the Conference of Christian and Jews," Father O'Con-nell says. "Religion was no barrier here. We started the Lyceum to help the intellectual, moral, social and physical advancement of the city's youth.

He helped them to properly fulfill their dutie to society. "The only requirement for membership was good character and $1 dues in that order. We once had a membership of 1200 and we were proud of our varied activities. Two of our most distinguished alumni are John J. Kane and John Laboon." Taught Drama and Held Night School The Lyceum excelled in sports and placed teams in amateur boxing, baseball, basketball, football and hockey.

But the Lyceum also supported a drama society, held night classes for those unable to attend in the day time, lecture courses and even operated a library. The social activities in the old days consisted of pro- grpssive euchre and monthly dances with members playing in the orchestra. "Our foolhall team was pretty Rood," Father O'Connell chuckles. "We played Duquesne, W. .1., West Vireinia and Villanova.

We averaged about 150 pounds a man. We had some of the toughest young men around. They'd never start a fight but they never backed away when somebody else did. (UP) The Rochester handed the Boston Celtics their second defeat within 21 hours today when they won a nationally-televised National Basketball Assn. game, 103- 102. It was Rochester's fifth vlc- tory in its last si starts after an 11-game losing streak.

The Royals led all the way except when, with one minute to play, Bill Sharman's field goal gave the Celtics a 100-99 lead. Then Maurice Stokes scored and Ed Fleming added two free throws for a Rochester three-point lead. Bill Russell of the Celtics scored unmolested with six seconds left and that ended the scoring. The Royals permitted Russell to score in order to avoid committing a foul. Dick Ricketts and Jack Twyman of the Royals were top scorers with 22 points each.

"I married Greh and Mildred Riley," Father O'Connell proudly recalls, "and Greh always told me what a wonderful Influence she was on him. hen Harry came to the Lyceum to train, Mildred came along and tpent her time in the library. "She died of tuberculosis about two or three years after their marriage and Greb never was the same." Although the Lyceum was built and operated in one of the rough and tough sections of the city, Father O'Connell is proud that every person who came through the door was a gentleman.
