PAGE Pithburgh Pros, Sunday, Oct. 16, I960 Press Roving Reporter i i $40 Million Erie Freeway Opens Friday! By WILLIAM A. WHITE I A $40 million Pennsylvania Knk of the Federal Interstate System of Highways the Joseph Horne Co. 99' Erie Free-wy will be opened over Its entire length on Friday, Oct 28. Off icjally 1 nated Interstate Highway 90, the 46 -mile, four-lane v.

EKN SYLVANIA Mr. White There has been some opposition to the Erie road since Gov. George M. Leader suddenly turned it into the Interstate System. Many persons thought he should have allowed it to become a part of the Turnpike System, as originally planned.

These persons saw It as a "convenience road" for picking up New York Thruway traffic, carrying It across the state into Ohio, and vice versa while giving little service to the people of Pennsylvania. But there Is no question that Erie will benefit from It, and the entire vacation area. Including Cambridge Springs, Conneaut Lake and other resort spots. Pittsburghers headed for Buffalo, Canada or New Eng- I land points, can take Routes 19 and 98, get on the Erie Thruway and reach where they are going almost with- i out encountering a traffic light. One thing it will do for sure is get New York's Thru-way out of the orchard, where it has been dead-ended for three years.

Construction of the road as the first completed section of the Interstate in Western Pennsylvania was made financially possible by money borrowed from the State Highway and Bridge Authority. Franklin Twp. Booms For Borough Status Threats Of 'Secession' Sparks Driver-Citizen Grovp Busy With Petitions By JACK McXAMAKA Threats of "secession" in Franklin Twp. have sparked a wave of community interest that may carry the second-class township two rungs up the municipal government sands of person from this area. On the Pittsburgh end of Route 19 during these months, and especially over weekends, traffic is often bumper-to-bumper for miles as homebound motorists from the north and others from North Tark merge on Mcknight Koad. Then there are miles of two-lane road on 19 between Pittsburgh and points north where one slow-moving vehicle stalls everything else.

So the great benefit of the new highway will accrue to the city of Erie and to motorists traveling between New York and eastern points and Ohio and western points. State's Cost Low Pennsylvania's cost for the road wil be low only about four million dollars on the basis of the announced 10 million because 90C of the load is being carried by the Federal Government.
