Radio Xcwvs and Gossip PAGE 30 THE PITTSBURGH PRESS. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1944 Yanks'Humor 0 he Innocently Involves himself In situations that everyone has been in or expects to be in. Jack Benny, helplessly trying to prove to hia cast that he's the boss, is the constant brunt of all the witticisms and situations on his program, proving that even inferiority can be funny. Diplomat Joins Staff of KDKA KDKA win present Charles L. De-Vault, the station's new analyst, at luncheon at the Hotel Roosevelt next Thursday.

Mr. DeVault spent 22 years in the Foreign Service of the United States Government. He was an attache the U. S. Embassy at Paris and was consul at London, Paris, Mexico City, at Taihoku and Yokohama, Japan.

He knows personally Hiro-hito, Pierre Laval, Lloyd George. Cordell Hull, Tojo and many other world figures. Mr. DeVault will broadcast his views of the news at 6:05 p. Mondays through Saturdays, starting March 6.

At the luncheon, Mr. DeVault wiTI speak on 'Unveiling the Mystery of the Orient." III Lopez Turns Author, Predicts War's End In Numerology Book Says Hitler Will 'Disappear into 'Obscure Fate; Sees London Losing Grip as Empire's Capital By SI STEIXHAUSER Vincent Lopez has just written a book, "What's Ahead?" putting into bound form the predictions he has poured into these scoffing ears through the years. Of course we didn'l always scoff for we saw some of the little maestro's number reading predictions come true. So we read his book, just off the David McKay press, with unusual interest. McKay, incidentally, specializes in books on prophecy, the occult, character reading and estimations of the future.

He published the works of Nostradamus. Lopez assures his readers that "prophecy is something 'Can Take It' Fibber's Script Writer Talks On Laughs "The American sense of humor is the most variable in the world." says Don Quinn, writer of the Fib ber McGee and Molly radio pro gram. "We usually can nnd a laugh In a situation, or a quick word at the right moment, where other nationalities would feel only the seriousness of the situation. I am reminded of the story of the first World War when a troopship was attacked, general quarters was sounded, and 2000 men below decks listened to the roar and thunder of heavy guns. They listened quietly, their nerves tense, waiting any moment for the sudden shudder of a torpedo hit.

Suddenly all was quiet. The guns stopped, the men breathed quietly. Someone suddeny said "Boom." The men roared and again the ship was a happy ship and in a few seconds word was received that the U-Boat had been sunk." Bing Crosby and Bob Hope bring us happiness chiefly because they are the personification of happiness and humor themeslves. They get their laughs by laughing at themselves. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello are constantly involved they are always in trouble they have created themselves, and they get their laughs through plain buffoonery.

The Great Gildersleeve finds a ready, humorous audience because Bills for medical attention Bills for coal Bills for furniture Bills for clothing Bills for dental work Bills for delinquent taxes' The (f lnialTrvst 414 Wood Street LOWEST RATES IN THE CITY Member F.D.I.C. TO CALL FOR ALL XI a at No Repeat Meyer Davis was visiting a radio producer when a dis-heveled-looking person entered with a plan for a terrific radio show. He proposed to do an act that would be the talk of the world. It could be advertised in advance and garner one of the highest Crossley and Hooper Survey ratings in existence. "If youH put $40,000 in escrow for my wife, I'll go before the mike and with a large studio audience in attendance, commit suicide!" "Marvelous," replied the producer, "But whatH you do for the repeat program to the West Coast?" SUNDAY, FEB.

Well, with whatever tools he works and he says they are only numbers he predicted the exact date on which Mussolini would declare war on us, came within seven days of naming the date on which the American Navy would meet up with disaster, missed Pearl Harbor by just that much and said the Bus-. sians would chase the Germans in 1943. From time to time we have published other predictions of national and international nature and they were all bull's-eyes or close shots. His book Is a gripping thing, telling of his family history, his father being a Spanish grandee and his mother a Portugese noblewoman.

His dad wanted him to be a priest, sent him to a monastery, from which he walked out after assuring his teachers that his father was wrong in picking the cloth for him and the old priests agreed his career was linked with the piano. His boyhood was spent at the keyboard under compulsion but from here on there was no compulsion about it. He subbed for a broken-down pianist in a saloon, "climbed" from there to other honkytonks where he worked at night while act ing as typist-secretary in a dairy by day. Came a break and an engagement on Broadway, where a five-man band finally expanded to the first Lopez orchestra which did the first dance band broadcast in the world. The rest is Broadway history.

Vince is still there with his band. Here is what you've been waiting for, what Lopez says lies ahead, in his book, and after you have read his predictions we'll give you one he didn't put in type and it out ranks all the others. Here goes Lopsz out on a limb: 1 The war with Germany will end in the latter part of 1944. The final or decisive action will take place in the Near East. 2 Hitler personally will survive defeat in 1943-4.

and will disappear in late 1946 or early 1947. His exact fate will be obscure. 3 The ruling military caste of Japan will be annihilated, its large army and navy will be wiped out, its economic and territorial ambitions crushed. This will became an accomplished fact in 1945. 4 America will emerge from this war, and in the peace to come, as the most powerful nation on earth, and as the leading people in the Western hemisphere.

She will win her way by peace, and a new form of the Good-Neighbor policy, not by war or business exploitation. Money as a business in itself will be abolished. 5 We face the prospect of race riots before the end of 1944! There is considerable unhappy experience in store for the various minorities, since racial issues will be dragged into the presidential campaign, increasing the bitterness. Some im- provement in the situation is possible but not much in the immediate future. 6 There will be a better understanding between capital and labor! An entirely new relationship between employer and employe is due to appear in the years 1944-47.

7 London will not remain the capital of the British Empire. London will remain the capital city of the British Isles, but the British Empire as we know it will not survive the present war. 8 India will be entirely on her own feet in the post-war organization of nations. She will first gain her freedom as a dominion, and then as a fully independent nation, an objective which will be consummated in 1947-48. 9 Russia will not fight Japan.

Russia will content herself with driving the Germans from Russian soil. This should be pretty well completed by the end of the summer season in 1944. 10 France will establish an entirely new form of democracy, and the nation will be restored in a big way. The old animosities between France and Germany will disappear completely. That closes the book but here is 954 LIBERTY RroVen Lantes Duplicated Broken Frames Repaired LAYING EGGS for Radio 1 Bomber.
