Then watch and listen as Barry Fitzgerald enriches every syllable of his lines by an instinctively "right" pause, a quizzical lift of an eyebrow, a tonal emphasis, small gesture. He's perfect, no less. Triumph for Bing And Bing Crosby all but matches the older Fitzgerald in his portrayal of young Father Malloy. The easy-going Bing effortlessly moves through the comedy-drama, singing a song in his own inimitable way, leading the tough little neighborhood kids in song-fests, nursing and fussing over old Father Fitzgibbon when the latter becomes ill all the time in complete command of a difficult role that would become tasteless under less astute approach and interpretation.

For the general public the virtue of "Going My Way" is its avoidance of a holier-than-thou attitude. Unmistakably, the two priestly characters are true men of God, but they are also ingratiatingly human, he-mannish, witty and full of the clean joy of living. McHugh, Too The other players are more than equal tdtheir assignments Frank McHugh as a third priest, James Brown and Jean Heather (both engaging youngsters) for a romantic side-issue; Rise Stevens an as opera star; Eliy Malyon as sour visaged but good hearted housekeeper; Stanley Clements, as the toughest kid in a tough neighborhood. And we mustn't overlook the scripting of Frank Butler and Frank Cavett. What they've turned out is nothing fancy, but down-to-earth writing at its best.

And in being down to earth, they've managed somehow to brush the stars. The crowds are flocking to the Penn. If you don't join them you'll be the loser. Opening today At the Stanley, "Sensations of 1945," with Eleanor Powell, Sophie Tucker and W. C.

To be sure he is crabbed and crusty at times and not above viewing with understandable distrust the encroachments of the modern world upon his very own little world. His "own little world" has its center in St. Dominic's Church on the wrong side of the tracks, where for 45 years he has labored against formidable odds. His congregation is miserably poor, contributions are inadequate, and as "Going My "Way" begins, the aged pastor has his back to the wall. For the church mortgage is about to be foreclosed.

Wins Sympathy So right off all your sympathy is with the grand little man. His every move and gesture and comment, somehow, induce that rare sort of chuckle which trickles through a half-lump in the throat. And who is this "upstart" who appears on the scene just when Father Fitzgibbon is so sorely troubled? A young priest of (from the old priest's viewpoint) strange behavior and outlandish toggery. A young man who wears a baseball player's uniform, who plays golf and who plays and sings at the piano? Fine business for a curate! Well you may well imagine Father Fitzgibbon's reception of the "interloper." Ah, the Bishop had sent him to be Father Fitzgibbon's assistant! Humph! And "Young man whatever made you become a priest?" For Father Fitzgibbon is dubious, to put it mildly. And it turns out that the young priest actually is to take charge of the parish for things are going badly.

Only the aging priest is not to know of this arrangement, for it would break his old heart. Character Study I'll tell no more of the story. For that matter there is little story to tell, for "Going My Way" is not cluttered up with routine plot. First and always it's a finely-wrought study of character, filled with homely and hilarious incidents and enlivened with clash of two minds one young and the other old. The old priest is stubborn, the young priest tolerant and indulgent.

How, in time, Father Fitzgibbon comes to understand and to love Father Malloy and how the latter contrives-, in various ways to brighten the way and lighten the load for his aging confrere bring that glow to the heart, the chuckle to the throat and the tear to the eye previously mentioned.
